REACHING FURTHER THAN EXPECTED
Over the past 4+years,we ’ve seen the magazine reach virtually the
entire state and outside our state lines.It ’s pretty cool getting emails from
folks in other states letting us know they ’ve checked us out and like what
they see.We ’ve even met some of these great folks face-to-face and I ’m
sure over time,we ’ll be meeting many more.You contribute to our fuel,
thanks.
The emails from within LA are most certainly appreciated as well.And it ’s
always great meeting you at rallies and events we ’re able to make.Your
kind words and support is the engine that keeps us riding.Thank You!
But I must admit that I ’ve not recognized a forgotten group of loyal
readers that for me,I can ’t take for granted.And that ’s the brothers and
sisters serving time.We hear from more bikers incarcerated than one
could realize.We have a loyal readership out there that look forward
to the mag each month and I can tell you,many have shared with us
their experiences of riding prior to serving time as well as their dreams
and aspirations of riding again when their time is done.And their letters
can open one ’s eyes to realizing our most precious right,and that ’s
to live in freedom!You would be amazed at the efforts through work
programs within the system that is utilized to reach that goal of obtaining
a subscription.And we ’re talking straight up earned pay at pennies on the
dollar or through the efforts of friend or family.
But it ’s certainly rewarding to know that through our magazine,they ’re
able to see and read about familiar places,familiar faces and all those
things that keep ’s their knees in the breeze.So,to those of you this
message reaches on the inside,we want you to know how much we
realize this opportunity to share with you those things you miss regarding
our shared passion is a privilege we at Thunder Roads don ’t want to
undervalue.And recognizing the significance of what it means to patiently
wait for that next issue inspires us to do our best to put a personalization
to each article we publish while at the same time providing you something
to look forward to.I have no way of knowing or understanding what you
feel.But I know it can ’t be all that great.But a newer awareness will be
present in each future issue.I promise to do my very best to reply to your
letters in a timely manner.Take care and be safe!
As of this publication,the latest news in-between the candidates ’ foreplay
and the money shot that ’ll be heard around the world in November,the
price of fuel in America is taking an interesting turn.Seems talking about
exploring more for oil and gas in areas not accessed (thanks to our
esteemed career politicians)is affecting the price of a barrel of oil after
all despite the nay-sayers.Now while I realize the reduction in costs are
minor,that could change by the time you ’re reading this and we may find
ourselves closer to moving forward to more drilling anyway.And I think
I can honestly say that a majority of us here in LA know full well,drilling
is not the answer,but it WILL be a major step forward of gaining our
independence from spending billions with those who would pray for our
destruction.And if we stay on this same path,refuse to buckle down and
get realistic,we stand the chance of suffering tougher times ahead.Be
informed,pay attention
and recognize the
power of knowledge and
common sense.Then
put it to good use at the
polls.

Let’s Get Realistic!
I know there are a large percentage of our readers who much like myself are employed in the oilfield. And while we may not know all the particulars regarding fuel prices (other than they suck), the speculators driving up the price of oil on paper, and the environmental concerns of the do-nothings in Congress on our payroll, what we do know is the oilfield of today, is definitely not the oilfield of 25 years ago.
Environmentalists believe opening up drilling off the coasts of Florida and California will have a detrimental effect on the environment and shouldn’t be allowed. I digress! As most of you already know, the oil & gas industry has felt the demands of environmental requirements and over 25 years ago, started a complete 180º turn when it comes to quality and environmental issues. Oil & Gas producers as well as the service companies who vie for their business has generated a new age of safety, quality and efficiency compared to the 80’s when the bottom fell out. The personnel you employ in today’s market find themselves in positions of great demand for our dedication to these three tenants. And it’s because of these requirements along with experienced and loyal employees that the oilfield of today is both quality and safety minded.
Post Katrina results in the Gulf of Mexico showed there was considerable damage to the producing rigs with no environmental disasters. Many of us viewed countless emails containing photos of rigs severely damaged including some that just disappeared. Some of you have actually had to survey these structures so you know first-hand. Even the Discovery Channel hosted programs that dealt with the salvage of some of these structures directly related to Katrina’s destruction. It must be recognized that the entire oilfield industry, consisting of drilling, rental, producing, transportation and supplemental companies as well as their employees are the very reason there were no deaths nor environmental disasters during this hurricane much less on any average given day.
The American Petroleum Institute has openly admitted that amongst all the rhetoric coming out of Washington, that to open drilling off these two coasts as well as ANWAR will not fix today’s current gas prices. However, they do acknowledge that working with existing leases near existing pipelines as well as new discoveries would help our country’s need for fuel well into the future. And that is what this is truly all about and should’ve been done 10 years ago (Thanks Slick Willy!). Our need for fossil fuels will exist for a long time. The entrepreneural spirit of today’s American will find new and exciting alternatives for fuel but the fossil fuel demand will still be very necessary. America doesn’t need to send dollars to countries that don’t like us much less funding their dictatorships either. But American’s need to recognize that while alternative fuel options need to considered, it’s not up to the government to invent it. Again, it’s the entrepreneural spirit of “we the people”, and not Uncle Sam.
As it stands now, our elected officials have come to a crossroad in their careers. They are feeling the tension, they are hearing the whispers and they can see the look in our eyes. We are becoming very vocal about our disgust for their lack of proficiency. Their free rides are about the run out of gas. This gas price issue has all the potential of becoming a national emergency, and threatens our own security. It’s time to get realistic about this and open the drilling for oil and gas off the coasts of FL and CA as well as ANWAR. Our politicians have no earthly idea how to fix the problem. All they’ve done over the past several years is perfected the blame game. Problem is NO ONE wins that competition but you and me. Unless we do something about it. It’s up to us!

Veteran’s Deserve Better!
It’s easy for us to sit at home chillin on the couch watching TV, movies or the news oblivious to the state of affairs within our country and those abroad. The banter plays rampant within the Democrapic Party while mum’s the word on the Repugnatcan Party. While the polls show Bush’s disapproval rating is at an all-time high, less focus seems to be the order of the day when it comes to recognizing Congress’ approval rating is at an all-time low. Democraps run the show in Washington but act like grade schoolers gone wild! Are these guys the same guys that want their, sorry OUR President elect to be a Democrap? One shudders at the thought.
But, I’ll give it to one Democratic Senator. And that’s Sen. Jim Webb of VA. He’s sponsoring a bill that would improve GI Bill college benefits so that many of our troops returning from combat might receive the same level of support their grandfathers received after WWII.
There are those who feel we can’t afford to be too generous. If we improve an education benefit for them, too many would opt for a life on college campuses instead of reenlisting or multiple tours. A study cites that 16% would decide to leave the military after their initial tour of duty. But what they fail to acknowledge is that in the same study, approximately 16% additional enlistments could be expected as well. Our military is all-volunteer and despite what we read in the papers and the extreme pressures of multiple deployments, our combat soldiers’ morale remains high. This loyalty is worthy of a country returning that appreciation through rewarding them in this manner for their sacrifices. With all other positive considerations in mind, improving the GI Bill to today’s standards can’t be of any great threat to our current enlistment statistics.
What really hurts about this attitude is that it’s one that’s shared by one of the Presidential candidates. John McCain is the last guy I’d figure would not be interested in improving this bill. Technically, his veteran status is no different than today’s US soldier. How can he or the majority of our congressmen not support this bill while posing for photo-ops with our soldiers and beginning and ending speeches with “Support the Troops”?
This needs to be an issue addressed by the presidential candidates and their support for or against this bill should be explained without spin. As a public servant of this capacity, they owe it to us to get out of this mindless zone of zombies and wake up to the oath they took. And if this is something we as American Citizens support, we should sound off, every one of us and demand they follow through with the will of “We the People”.
This is a topic that falls in line with this suddenly new word spit out called “change”. If these candidates are truly committed to change, then they need to live it rather than brag on it. Our troops are fighting a war started on their watch. They need to see it through by doing the right thing for the American Soldier instead of pursuing their own interests and we need to encourage them diligently while we enjoy our freedoms back home. Never forget that our Military is watching our backs and keeping the torch of freedom burning brightly for us all. This is one courageous way to show our gratitude in return.

May is Motorcycle Safety & Awareness Month
Once again, the motorcycle community is recognized as focal subjects for 31 days as a few generous media outlets assist the Louisiana Motorcyclists Safety & Awareness Committee, MAC and ABATE of LA along with other active organizations and individuals spread the word about motorcycle awareness in the state of LA during the month of May. It is also recognized nationwide as well. While these efforts are applaudable, it should never be over come June 1st and beyond. Motorcycle safety and awareness is a “24/7-365 state-of-mind”. And it’s up to every one of us to maintain that mindset of safety and the sharing of awareness. Please do your part on behalf of yourself and your fellow riders to practice both with generosity and integrity.
We all know that soon, there will be a vote cast that will determine whether bikers will have the freedom of choice or not. And it goes without saying, there will be many that will argue that the use of the word “freedom” is a weak excuse at best when it comes to adults choosing to wear a helmet or not. I personally am an advocate for “choice”. We’re all old enough to make a decision and riding in and of itself has its risks that we’re all very much aware of. If you choose to ride lidless, remember the risks associated with it. But also remember too, while a majority of crashes associated with motorcycles involve a vehicle violating the rider’s right-of-way, LA particularly suffers a tremendous percentage of loss-of-life due to alchohol abuse. Please look out for your friends and fellow riders and take the keys if they drink too much. All of LA’s biker friendly bars are more than willing to secure their scoot till they can come back sober to ride her home. Escorted rides to graveyards are too emotional to endure the loss of a friend.
But let’s go back to that term “freedom” that the skeptics love to blast as our bullshit excuse for riding lidless. Government has never, ever been experts in taking it upon itself to make choices for adults. This “save them from theirselves” mentality needs to be redirected back to the policy-makers themselves. America’s citizens need to collectively step up to the plate to serve notice that America’s government was established to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people. There are too many attempts to control our personal lives and when it comes to freedom of choice being controlled, it’s always a matter of time when another freedom is taken away. Folks, this is not something to be taken lightly. Our FREEDOM can be jeopordized quicker than you think, and in many, many more ways than one.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
Over the past couple months, we’ve been asked the same question over and over again regarding a new event that’s scheduled to take place October 17-19, 2008. The New Orleans Bikefest Motorcycle Rally & Music Festival, making its debut at Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego, LA, is presenting bikers, sponsors and vendors alike one specific question they all want an answer to. And the question is; “Is the New Orleans Bikefest or its promoters affiliated with Steel Pony Express or Scooter Promotions in any way, shape or form?” The answer to this question is a resounding “NO!!!” This event is being produced by Live Free Promotions, LLC which is owned and operated by area locals, Barry Lee and Kay Miller.
Both Barry & Kay have had their share of the same questions which led to their addressing it as the first question on their FAQ page of their website; www.neworleansbikefest.com. As riders themselves, they’ve traveled to many various major rallies throughout the country and felt the urge to bring an event to New Orleans on behalf of LA’s biker community. We all know living in a post Katrina world put a damper on a major biker event so between existing events and this one, something has to give. And this event has all the possibilities of bringing something major back to the New Orleans area. And despite the on-going recovery efforts, New Orleans still offers a much-loved desire for bikers from all over the country to come down and visit “Party Central, USA”.
Barry & Kay weren’t prepared for the line of questioning coming from vendors and riders alike. The main concerns of course came from potential vendors and sponsors as well as advertising avenues; those who would be “investing” an interest through participation or services. And if you’re a vendor, sponsor or advertising business reading this with your own personal encounters with the “subjects in question”, you know full well what we’re talking about. And no one wants to get burned again.
So we spent some time with Barry and Kay speaking extensively about this situation and have come to learn that they are genuine and sincere about kicking off a biker event that will be enjoyable for LA’s Biker Community and with the best intentions for it to become profitable for all of the businesses setting up at the rally site, as well as the sponsoring businesses who support it. This is a bold venture on their part and they’ve learned that “Trust” is just as much an equal investment as the dollars being spent to promote and support it. It has always been said in the community that whoever steps up to the plate to kick-off another biker rally in the New Orleans area will have their hands full obtaining the trust of those whose investments were lost at a failed attempt to keep an existing rally alive. I personally, am willing to trust in the efforts and character of Barry Lee and Kay Miller to get something great off the ground once again in the New Orleans area. Please join me in supporting this event as you have others in past through our recommendations. They certainly deserve a chance to earn your confidence.

Another Biker Family Needs Your Help!
Deaths in the Motorcycle Community are hard to bear. Losing a member of our family is devastating and because of our lifestyle, reluctantly acceptable. Murder in the Motorcycle Community however, is TOTALLY unacceptable. Don’t get me wrong, murder is inexcusable in any community. But in ours where the stakes are already high, this cannot be an acceptable factor.
Archie Solet, a native of Houma and a resident of Dulac, LA died at approximately 1pm at St. Roch Ave. and North Robertson St in New Orleans by a bullet from a gun held by some punk-assed gangsta wanna-be. Archie is survived by his wife Brandy, three sons; Chase, Dillon and Evan along with family and countless friends.
Archie was doing nothing out of the ordinary. A biker like you and I in a scenario such as this, Archie decided to take a ride on his scoot while Brandy and his kids went out shopping. With a beautiful day of riding ahead, Archie headed out to the French Quarter. Apparently, while traveling around the area, Archie wound up at one of the busiest intersections in the 8th Ward. And at 1pm, Archie became another statistic expemplifying New Orleans’ infamous and escalating violence and murder; Dead of multiple gunshot wonds. At present, police have no motives much less suspects. The family was told detectives have located a witness but albeit unwilling to testify out of terror of retrobution. But Archie’s murder was not the lone killing that day. Two other men were shot to death just hours in unrelated killings before Archie was murdered.
In a recent article in the Times Picayune, Criminologist Peter Scharf said “the statistics show the city’s crime has gotten worse and remains impervious to the recently stepped-up law enforcement efforts” with the additional mention that “there are consistently 15-19 or so people dying each month for the last 2 years.”
This is not surprising to any of us who live around the NO area or even watch the news broadcasts. Traveling to the city on our bikes is supposed to be something to enjoy. What is becoming an additional fact to consider is while riding there, watch out for the lunatics behind the wheel and the lousy road conditions, armed robbers enters into the equasion. This is “F’d” up to say the least. Maybe, these young punk bitches will wind up becoming a statistic themselves. Their career choice almost guarantees it. Will they be that lucky? Time & justice will see.
March 16th will be the day for the Archie Solet Benefit Run. Monies raise will go towards reward with Crime Stoppers of NO and to help support his surviving family. Please review the info in this month’s calendar of events. And PLEASE make every effort to support this event. I’ll be looking for you there. Please keep Archie and his family in your prayers.

A Call to Arms For a Brother in Need!
If I were to mention a name, Jay Allen, a large majority of you here in LA wouldn’t know who I was talking about. Now, if I mentioned the Broken Spoke Saloon in Sturgis, then I believe I’d have named something very familiar then. For those of you who’ve visited Sturgis, this name is well known and you probably slugged a few cold ones at the Spoke. Those of you, like me who hasn’t been yet may have at least heard of the Broken Spoke Saloon. And Jay is the proprietor.
There’s a very important story breaking out in Meade County, SD that has a profound effect on one specific person (Jay) and a much bigger and broader effect on all of us as bikers. And this is a call on you for your help.
Back in December, the commissioners of Meade County held a review session of Jay and the Broke Spoke Saloon and Sturgis County Line Campground. In short, Jay was denied the renewal of his liquor license by said commissioners. In the 15 years since Jay took ownership, he has gone without one single liquor infraction in SD. The reason stated by the commissioners for their denial was Jay’s “questionable moral character”, allegedly stemming from a dispute with two local contractors involved in his Sturgis County line project.
Jay’s investments in this project has been in the millions in less than 2 years and actually reduced his construction debt from $1.4 million to under $90k. The only contention is with the 2 local contractors who appeared before the commission requesting their denial for Jay’s liquor license although the matters are in question. Jay supplied the commission with all the documentation regarding the two in contention and the disputed claims. It also included a request from Jay’s attorney requesting proof of expenditures for an exorbitant invoice by these contractors. Of the five total members of the commission, one is known to be good friends and close neighbors with one of the contractors in dispute. The commissioners sided with the contractors despite the lack of evidence in their favor and failed to explain how Jay Allen lacked moral character.
When asked by one commissioner, Mr. Wink, what Jay (calling Jay an outsider) has done for Meade County, they didn’t consider the following facts about Jay; He has not missed a rally in Sturgis since 1986, Jay employs up to 100 locals at the annual rally and committed millions of dollars to the county with both of his businesses, he’s help raise tens of thousands of dollars for Kids and Chrome charity and SD Make-A-Wish as well as the Foothills Assisted Living rest home, he’s paid for the lights at the Fort Meade ballpark and received multiple awards for his generosity towards Veterans through Broken Spoke over the years. In the end, the commission wouldn’t budge.
So, friends and those working hard to help Jay is requesting help from the entire biker community of America... Although this is not a LA related situation, Sturgis is the mother of all biker rallies with a history second to none. Happy New Year Louisiana!
2008 has arrived leaving 2007 pretty much a blur! A lot of stuff took place in ’07 both good and bad and we can only hope 2008 brings prosperity and peace to everyone we know and love. Here’s wishing everybody a happy and prosperous New Year.
There are a lot of things slated for ’08 but the one that tops the list is the Presidential elections. Caucuses are the top news events of the day and results from these pretty much determine who has the stamina and money to follow through till Election Day. I never really understood the importance of 2 simple states making the determination of who may or may not be our next leader but such is the way of politics here in America. The most important fact remains; everyone who is eligible to vote NEEDS TO VOTE. If you’re not registered, then do so! It’s very sad that there are many in this free country who feels their vote doesn’t count. It does count. More than you can imagine. We Americans need to get between this fighting partisanship and remind the politicians that they work for us and its OUR VOICE they must represent.
Additionally, there are politicians out there who feel the right to vote should be available to non-residents of this country. This is coming in the form of not having to show identification when you hit the voter’s booth. Virtually all of us have to show a legitimate form of ID to access your bank account, credit, driver’s license, writing checks, etc. but casting a vote for a leader of your local community, state or country is not necessary. The results of this possibility could have tremendous consequences for us all if we don’t pay attention to this. It’s bad enough many legitimate Americans don’t go to the polls to cast a vote. If you’re one of them, you and those of us who do may have our votes overwhelmed by residents who are not in this country legally. The fact that this is NOT COOL is an understatement to say the least. Its one thing that there are non-residents obtaining drivers licenses through false means. Now they get to pick our leaders too! Doesn’t anyone see the implications this could create? This can’t happen folks. It just can’t! Get involved, get interested and be very aware of any efforts some of these desperate politicians will go through to make this happen.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
Well everyone, another year has come and it’s almost gone. But before we can look into 2008, we want to wish our readers, customers, supporters and our Troops and their families a very Merry Christmas. For those of us here at home preparing for our Christmas dinners, please take a moment to remember our troops. Be it through prayer, a moment of silence, or just a quiet moment to yourself; please consider them and their sacrifices. But of course, consider your loved ones as well.
This issue, you will see an article published by Michael Yon. I mentioned him a few issues back. He’s the journalist embedded with our troops and the British troops as well, reporting on the “true” realities in Iraq. We are honored to have the opportunity to bring you close to the facts about the efforts being made there. We hope to be allowed to publish other dispatches from Michael. In the meantime, please take a moment to visit his website; www.michaelyon-online.com. You can read and experience the war through his eyes and the eyes of the soldiers he walks ground with. We will be having a link from our site to his very soon.
I will be looking into a project for 2008. And I would like your participation. I want you to take a moment at some point and think as if you were a mentor to a child that simply loves motorcycles. Now, most of you are parents already and that should be a no-brainer. But think about it from a point of view where you are speaking to this young child of a manner in which you are teaching him an important aspect of life as applied to your bike. Think about it for a while and I believe you can envision what I mean. It can be related to riding, wrenching, participating, organizing, hanging with friends, etc. Anything you do involving your scoot and how owning, servicing, enjoying or experiencing motorcycling in some way teaches valuable lessons in life to a child. When you think about it, awareness is what saves lives. Kids learn plenty in their young age. And their innocence and a willingness to learn is a value that holds no bounds. If you had the opportunity to teach every child, that one particular bit of advice or lesson, they can learn about motorcycle awareness as well as how owning a motorcycle requires responsibility, awareness, safety, skill and respect; all the lessons of life that can be applied everywhere else in their world. Give it some thought, jot it down in an email, then mail it to me at nappy69@bellsouth.net. Keep them short and to the point, please.
You’re going to see more national articles of events and interests this coming year. Some you’ve seen start to come in the last couple months. The Thunder Roads Magazine family is growing and coverage of events through the TRM name and we’re becoming more and more “aware of” on the national scenes. So we’re able to bring well-known national events to our pages while still keeping the magazine YOUR magazine because Louisiana is your home. We hope you like these contributions.

When Will They Ever Learn?
I’m always interested in seeing what the Democrats have to say when it comes to their plan to make our country a better place. I’m still waiting……Seems all the Dem leadership is ever interested in is slamming someone from the general public instead of focusing on the lame promises they made that got these morons elected in the first place.
Case in point; Rush Limbaugh. Seems Senator Harry Reid had a problem with a statement Rush made regarding “phony soldiers”. He went into his little infantile rant on how Rush doesn’t respect the troops, blah, blah! And as is typical of the agenda driven Democrapic Congressional leadership, a “pick and choose” approach to the transcripts of Rush’s show used only what they could with the hopes to silence yet another person who lays it on the line. This garnered so much media attention. And of course the far-left media’s jumped right on board for some more juicy gossip, all of course with “America’s best interest at heart”. Yea right!
The reality of it all is simply put. Rush did use the term but if one heard or read the entire transcript, anyone could realize the context of the comment was referenced to a young man named Beauchamp (and others like him), who after much investigation was found to not have even served in Iraq, much less saw what he documented as being seen. He did enough damage to the rest of the troops’ reputation as well as the commanding officers. And the far-left media and Democrapic leadership jumped right on his reports as valid without even taking the time to validate any of his claims. But that’s another story and you may be surprised to know, Beauchamp was given a chance to serve and is currently in Iraq, for real! I would tend to believe that this young soldier has learned his lesson so we must learn to forgive and allow him to remain focused as he fights for our country and the freedom of the Iraqi people.
The whacky thing about all of this is Rush turned around and took Sen. Reid’s slam letter and put it up for auction on Ebay. Come the end of the auction, the letter sold to the highest bidder for a record-breaking 2.1 million dollars!!! And, Rush will match the amount and the 4.2mil will be donated to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation. Old Dirty Harry was almost speachless (yea, right). He did do the old “flipity-flop” while addressing Congress and proceeded to virtually take credit for the massive amount of money donated to the MCLEF, in true Democrapic form. Yes, that’s right. He and his 40 or so Democrapic puppets made this all happen. At press time, none of them have yet to donate from their own pockets.
Seems that the tide is turning on these particular Dems in that the news coming out of Iraq has been “good news” and the violence is lessening while the people of Iraq turn to our brave soldiers for assistance, guidance and support. Even ole’ bin Laden appologized for Al’ Quaida’s inability to lead Iraq into Utopia. You Democrats out there who insist on losing a winnable war take notice: Next time you’re out there campaigning for our vote, your words are likely to “really require a willing suspension of disbelief.” I hear WalMart is always hiring.

The Admirable Biker Mentality
Throughout the years of my riding and associating myself with bikers from all walks of life, I have watched with ever-growing amazement the one prevailing mentality that each one of us holds to others; generosity. It really doesn’t matter what the situation may be, bikers seem to always have this gift for support when the need arises. And it usually has no boundaries. I see it, you see it, and we all see it at varying degrees and levels. It’s abundant and more notably, contagious!
But what makes this generosity easy to deliver, is what one receives in return. When you get right down to it, the admiration for what one does through some show of support extends gratitude in return for that generosity that tells the recipient something very, very important to them. And that is the fact that you understand, you grasp their pain and you can comprehend their world for that very moment, when it’s at its most intense for them. That’s because we’re all alike in many ways and can relate to some degree. Despite the fact that once the benefit has ended, the bikers have left and everyone has returned home, the beneficiary of that event leaves with a memory that remains forever forged in their minds and their hearts. And that memory is what’s important to us. How they see us, how they remember us, how they relate to us in the future and how they convey this message to others. Your generosity towards others IS more important than you think.
I saw this recently with the Jonathan Wainright benefit. They were grateful to us for what we did with the mag. But in truth, all we did was relay the message. The biker community did the rest. They received support from all over LA and surrounding. One voice became twenty, then fifty, then two hundred an on and on. And riders showed up in droves. The letters of thanks came to us, but they were most certainly meant for those of you who supported it in some way!
The same holds true to simple tasks as well. A young friend of my oldest daughter recently lost her dad. He was a rider and she spent lots of time riding on the back of his bike enjoying the same things we all enjoy on two wheels. Their bond was an integral part of her life. I wanted to show our support so I remembered a photo I took of him a while back. Printed it up, framed it and along with a card, and a few copies of the mag with article he appeared in, made a visit to extend condolences to the family and present these to her. She couldn’t thank us enough. We spent more time with them than expected during their time of mourning, but when we left, we knew in our hearts that we did something very special. We expressed our support and however simple our gift seemed to be, it meant more to them than we could imagine. The good that we felt in our hearts as we left, was pure and genuine. There will be times in my life when this simple form of generosity will mean more to me than anything else. It will be then and only then will I truly appreciate it. Until that time, YOU, my fellow riders will continue to show me the value of your generous hearts, which in turn I will do my best to resonate. But please know, because you are who you are, I am forever grateful! Thank you!

Gaining Insight on an Unpopular War
In my getting “refined” years, I’ve become more and more interested in news and utilize the local news channels for my own community and surrounding while scanning the major networks for nation and world news. Yea, I’m a “Fox Fan” if it hasn’t become evident. I like it straight up and if I’m not sure or don’t trust it…I’ll usually do my own research to either validate or refute. I’d like to think that’s the best way to learn what is real compared to what isn’t. Sometimes you can find yourself wadding in a river full of garbage before you finally get to the shore of truth you’re seeking.
Sometimes, I get it early while other times, I get it late. One example of this is reading their “Dispatches From Iraq”. Since I’m very interested in this war on terrorism (oops, did I say a naughty word?) and one day checked out one of the dispatches. I learned about some incredible things from its author, Michael Yon. You see, Michael is a former Green Beret who’s served his time for our country in Iraq and has chosen on his own accord to follow the progress in Iraq, with our troops and the Iraqi Army long after the major network reporters have left the “action”. While others report on the fighting, wounding and deaths, Michael is there telling “the rest of the story”. This usually, is the part of the war that never gets broadcast or published.
We’re used to hearing about soldiers killed, convoys ambushed, civilians killed by coalition fire but you rarely hear about what or how all this came about. You never hear about the convoy regrouping and bringing much needed food to villages and townships. You rarely hear (if ever) about how the Iraqi people are beginning to trust American Soldiers and have learned that while they would very much like our soldiers to return home, they do appreciate and know they can count on these brave men and women to be there for them. You rarely ever hear about an American Commanding Officer coming to a batter town, cleared of terrorists and helping organize the community. These commanders are commonly known as “Mayors” to the Iraqi people and village leaders because of their skills in organizing all facets of life requirements in a community in order for it to function normally. These skills require the organization of hospitals, law enforcement, utilities, food, fuel, water, etc. Everything it takes to function a town. And our soldiers and their commanders are doing this every day. It’s unfortunate, not much of this is known. But guess what fans…”Progress” seems to be the “word of the day” with some of our politicians and government leaders. That’s odd; this all didn’t start just yesterday.

Politicians and Election Time
It really doesn’t take a rogue-scholar to know when election time is around the corner. The rhetoric pours like summer rain in South Louisiana. And we’ve seen a tremendous amount of it here lately and I’m not talking liquid sunshine. Nope, the usual and predictable “finger-pointing” is flying around in peoples faces; it’s just a matter of time before someone gets poked in the eye. And Americans are getting their fill of it too.
Months ago, Congress experienced a change with the election of new officials. Between the 2 main parties involved, this group of irresponsible “children” have since shown Americans how screwed up their policies continue to be. No one can agree on most things, and the promises made so they could get elected have yet to surface, and it seems there isn’t a “public servant” to be found anymore. Career politicians make me sick with their empty promises and mightier-than-thou attitude. And certain divisions of the media are right along side of these creeps too.
Polls can say one thing (representing the voice of the people) but either Mr. Congressman or some facet from the media is telling Americans that’s really not what we want. They figure the status-quo remains and all they have to do is spin the numbers or facts to their own personal opinions and presto, us illiterate Americans will be none the wiser. I don’t know about you guys and gals but a baseball bat against the TV screen has crossed my mind many a time. Unfortunately, these new plasmas cost an arm and a leg and replacing them every now and then isn’t really cost effective.
But I’m starting to see and hear some things that really make me smile. Americans are starting to pay attention and these career politicians better do the same. Recently, YouTube held the first ever candidates debate and one plus was reformatting the debate from the norm. And what came out from this and possibly more in the future is that Americans can openly speak out and demand more from these people who insist on participating in the running of our country. Americans are beginning to see through the bullshit that runs so rampant amongst these particular politicians. Enough with the acceptance of special interest monies. Listen to the PEOPLE and not your fellow career politician. Make up your mind and stick to it. All this “flip-flopping” of positions on issues is enough to give me hemorrhoids. Get out and L-I-S-T-E-N to A-L-L the things your constituents say. Not just the ones that parallel your agenda only. And stop your finger pointing and complaining about your fellow politicians and those from other parties. Wake up and smell the shit you’re shoveling. It doesn’t matter what party affiliation you belong to. You belong to US! Your loyalty is to one entity and that’s the American people. Those who voted you in office. And we want more results, solutions and support from you without the blame game. Remember back in the day when you were young and dumb and you would piss your mom off? What did she tell you? “I brought you into this world…..I’ll take your ass out!” You’d better start listening to mom again. Cause you’re pissing her off!

Introducing Rockin’ M Campground
Seven years ago, several friends got together and we hauled ass north to a little town called Angie, LA. There we were met with steady showers and a small group of folks checking out a first-time event call the “Labor Day Biker Party”. Seems Lee & Mary McKenzie along with friends Brad & Norma Harris had this vision of putting on an old-fashioned style event that involved bikers and a party. Seemingly not that unique of a concept, their idea matured considerably more than expected. While that year, the rain hampered what could’ve been a good turnout, it didn’t stop anyone, and I mean ANYONE from making the best of the weekend and ultimately enjoying themselves.
The following year, the LDBP moved to Enon, LA. A quaint little spot called Riverbend Campground was to be the new location. Nestled back near the Bogue Chitto Creek, it provided an atmosphere almost Woodstock-ish with a biker flavor. Despite a few years later with the intrusion of Katrina, the LDBP was postponed to a later date, but those true to this event showed up regardless. And each year, as word got out, folks wanting to experience this event for the first time became the new rookies and have also remained loyal as well. The only hurdles keeping the veterans away were either jobs or family commitments. But with crowds growing well into the upper hundreds, someone always knew when someone was missing that particular event. It’s like a family reunion or sorts.
Along comes the Memorial Day Biker Party, (to be featured in our August issue). Another outstanding event put on by the Rottncycle Promotions Krewe. Word got out on that one early and crowds showed up en masse. The seams were stressing on the campgrounds and after much negotiations to facilitate the demand for more floor space, the owners didn’t budge. So, what’s a promoter to do? That answer was simple…….RELOCATE!
And that they did, to Sandy Hook, MS. Lee and the gang really wanted to stay in LA but knew a prime location near the state-line wouldn’t keep the loyal bikers away. So, Rockin’ M Event Center was formed. Currently sporting 180 campsites with water & electricity, open courtyard in front of a covered stage (complete with dance pole) and bath-houses for guys and gals, its maiden voyage was tested for Memorial Day Weekend. It was a packed house! And the available sites for primitive were abundant too. Plans are in the works to plumb up more sites and there’s plenty land to expand as the demand dictates. There’s even an event being promoted by Johnny Chopper after the LDBP in September. So, that’ll be 3 events to start. Expect more to follow. This is a site designed, created and run by bikers…for bikers! It’s a great location and well laid out for pleasurable weekends and/or events. Lee, Mary, Brad and Norma are phenomenal friends and are always available to talk to you about their facility and events. Give them a holler at 601-736-3721 or 601-736-2025. Happy Father’s Day!
I subscribe to Men’s Health Magazine. Not because I yearn to be a yuppie or some high-faluttin exec. I do it cause it’s a really cool rag. All kinds of tips for relationships, health, life, stuff and sex. Hey, they’re pretty good on interesting stuff about sex. And I read ALL OF IT TOO!!! But here’s a prime example of why I get this mag.
Their June issue had a very inspiring article by Richard E. Hoyt, Jr. You see, Richard has Cerebral Palsy. He cannot speak or walk. The story he wrote for MH was done on a computer with special software which allows him to move his head slightly to choose a letter, then a switch is pressed on the side of his head to enter the letter. I personally cannot imagine the patience required to perform such a task. Comparing that while typing this editorial is totally unimaginable. Rick being able to accomplish this alone is inspirational to say the least.
Rick’s story tells of “what his father means to him”. Rick and his dad run marathons together. They are known as Team Hoyt. Rick in his wheelchair while his dad pushes. Some marathons involve not only the run, but swimming as well. Dad will push with Rick up front or swim with Rick in tow. Some athletes didn’t want them to participate in their first official race but the executive director gave them permission. This really launched their running career and they’ve been marathoning ever since. This even included a triathlon which included a 10-mile run with Dad pushing, a 1-mile swim with Rick on a raft tied to a rope wrapped around Dad’s chest and ended with a 50-mile bike ride with Rick in a cart towed behind Dad’s bike. Total races tally at press-time? More than 950 races, including 25 Boston Marathons and six Ironmans.
Rick is often asked what he would do if not disabled and in the beginning he’d answer something like play baseball or hockey. Then something made him realize that he’d probably tell his Dad to sit down in his wheelchair so Rick could push him for a change. Rick realized that if it weren’t for his Dad, he’d probably be living in a home for people with disabilities, not even close to living the life he’s living right now. Rick says, “He is not just my arms and legs. He’s my inspiration, the person who allows me to live my life to the fullest and inspire others to do the same”.
Rick’s article made me realize the prize I have in my life. My Dad, Rene’ Chauvin. Dad was raised the simple life. Back in the days when families struggled to make ends meet, worked hard in the oilfields and raised his kids after a divorce and another marriage. Dad is “old-school”. Helping others in need, caring for others when they need hope or support, and always willing to share a cup of coffee and conversation with those in his life. He loves his family and supports us in all we do. June is a special month in his life because he turns 71 this year, and then later on has a day that honors him and other dad’s like him for his role in our lives.
Dads have Father’s Day to remind everyone that for one day, he can be pampered with love and appreciation for all the things that he’s done and what he stands for. Here’s to all of the Dads in the world, to all the Dad’s in the military and especially my Dad. You are my inspiration and I want you to know how much I appreciate all that you’ve done for me and that I love you so very much. Happy Birthday and Happy Father’s Day.

May is Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month!
Here we are in May and this is the month where all attention should be placed on all of us as motorcycle enthusiasts. We all know too well the excuses given in a motorcycle crash and unfortunately these excuses are given way too much validation to those who cause these crashes.
The upside to this awareness is that studies continue to show inattentive driving habits and are becoming front page news. Cell phone use, texting, aggressive driving, eating, drinking, piddling with the stereo, watching videos, GPS, applying make-up, reading, pets, fussing the kids, arguing with someone, sightseeing. Then there’s driving drunk, under the influence, under medication and driving tired from lack of rest, failure to yield to right of ways and not using signals. Then, there are those who just don’t belong behind the wheel period!!! And let’s not forget Louisiana’s pathetic highways and road conditions. Ask any driver out there and we’ll all agree; if you could enter LA from any bordering state blindfolded, you wouldn’t need anyone to tell you when you crossed the state line. The roads themselves tell you that you’re here. These are just a fraction of the causes of crashes on our nation’s highways. And we as bikers know full well the results of these situations and have known about them for a very very long time.
“Driving is a Privilege that DEMANDS RESPONSIBILITY!” This is not a birthright. It’s not something owed to anyone. You have to EARN this right. It starts with the parents introducing their kids to the laws and requirements of the road and the responsibility to others as well as themselves once they get behind the wheel. And very importantly, never taking for granted they become instant experts, because there are no experts! And all teens once they get that permit can’t wait to feel the power, control their environment and cross into the next level of authority. Then comes the ass-kicking stereo, lights, window tint, etc. All the things that express individuality. Don’t we know about that! But this is where it all begins and determines the future. It starts with us as parents, and we maintain their education through generous knowledge, example and awareness of the ever changing technologies, conditions and sometimes the results from the negative actions of others. This is the future generation that will share the roads with you and our fellow bikers. Teach them respect for and to watch for others and they’ll lead by example amongst their piers. When that happens, you’ll be satisfied knowing you did the best you could do to raise a responsible driver in your sons or daughters.

Stand Up for What’s Rightfully Yours!
Let’s just say….your neighbor’s dog is pain in the ass. Barks all the damn time and takes routine dumps on your lawn. And while it pisses you off that YOU are the one to clean it up, you pretty much just brush it off “as to not make waves or cause problems”. Your neighbor knows it’s not cool but figures “WTF, I ain’t gotta clean it up. It’ll waste away and become part of the land. Hell, it’ll make the grass grow greener”. His moronic view of his contribution to the environment. Another prime example of irresponsible behavior. Eventually, you say something about it but in return rather than a responsible reply, you get that arrogant defiance in return for a legitimate beef. Even if their friend is over for a visit or another neighbor witnesses this, they seem to side with them as if you haven’t a right to protect what’s rightfully yours. You pretty much feel alone and without support. So, you continue to be passive just for the sake of “getting along”. It’s easy to see that visitor or other neighbor isn’t too worried about your concerns cause the problem pooch ain’t crapping on their lawn, hence the “laugh it off” attitude towards you. It ain’t their problem……yet.
Sure, a bullet between the dog’s eyes would cure the problem but really, it ain’t the dog’s fault (nor is this legal! To be politically correct, I officially declare that I don’t encourage anyone to shoot the neighbor’s dog, much less the neighbor, regardless of their behavior). It’s just that his master hasn’t disciplined him in pooch-poop etiquette. Besides that, you’d not only have the neighbor to deal with but the local law, your neighbor’s attorney and even the local animal rights pimps banging on your door for retribution. Still all that attention never focuses on the original main problem; irresponsible behavior.
While this is actually quite true in life to some, it presents all of us with a seriously growing problem. And that problem is complacency. Before our very eyes is a change in America that we all need to study, take notice and be prepared to deal with it. America is becoming weaker by the day in the eyes of the world. There are Americans living right next door who believe that America has created all the ills of the world, hence; “We’re the “Bad Guys”. And their rhetoric is fueled by a biased media who channels this into our homes each and every day. And more and more weak minded people are jumping on that bandwagon and encouraging others to do the same without any regards to individual responsibility. And this responsibility is not only to get involved in our own government, education, parenting and contributions to society, it’s about realizing what the future holds for us in a world infested with terrorism and a hatred for us, “Americans”. When the next terrorist action happens on our shores, and we all know it will, do you honestly think the terrorists will give a damn about your political, religious or moral views, be it pro or con? “HELL NO!!!” You’ll be just another “Dead American”. And that’s just fine by them.
There are dogs out there looking to take a crap in your yard folks, trying to claim your territory as theirs. If we don’t do something about it collectively, we’ll ALL be walking around with shit on our boots.

“Bless You Boys!!!”
In writing this month’s editorial, I had to take the route that most have taken, and that’s to express my sincerest thanks and congratulations to Coach Sean Peyton and the Saints. Most of you who know me, know full well that I wasn’t much of a Saints fan but I always made it clear it was because of Benson and the way he disrespected the fans combined with the rhetoric about moving the team. I, like many, shared the opinion that it would probably be best if they just moved along cause the fans didn’t deserve such arrogance. Not after the years of loyalty the fans gave this organization.
But something happened that changed all that. Benson wasn’t in the media limelight anymore. Instead, the team once again became legitimate front page news. With Sean Peyton being awarded “Coach of the Year”, a young team under his guide winning games with the skills “professional football” demands, suddenly our boys made it all the way to the “Final Four” in the running to play in this year’s Superbowl. Who would’ve thunk it??? Who said prayer doesn’t work? On that frigid Sunday in Chicago though, I guess it wasn’t meant to be.
“THERE IS NO – I – IN TEAM”. This was what Coach Whatley used to tell us in high school, as many coaches preach to young football players, even to this day. Coach Sean Peyton exemplifies this philosophy. The Saints have shown the residents of this state what it takes to work as a team and focus on one goal. They proved to us that action makes all the difference. No one on that squad ran their mouths or made empty promises. They dressed out, put on their game face, focused on their mission and most importantly, GOT POSITIVE RESULTS. Although they didn’t make it to the Superbowl, it sure as hell felt like “Next Year”. These athletes are “True Winners” regardless of the outcome in Chicago. And there’s a lot to be learned from them too. These athletes have shown us what it takes to be winners. My only hope is that their drive, determination and dedication to their teammates and their fans rub off on all of us collectively. Because if we all become a “TEAM”, recovery, politics, education, employment and our way of life here in Louisiana can improve for the better. Think about it; The Saints’ players did this for us, shouldn’t we in return, do our part for them? These guys busted their asses to get where they are today. Don’t let this inspiration go to the wayside people. This team has shown us a standard of excellence we’ve not seen in years. We owe it to them and ourselves to become a team once again and demand the best in all we have to offer. Wouldn’t it be great to be respected for an efficient and effective government, educational system, employment opportunities, recovery and our way of life? It’s not that far-fetched! Even the nation seemed to be with us, rooting for the Saints to make it to the Superbowl. Why just the other day I saw the devil himself looking very concerned while purchasing some serious cold-weather gear. He may want to hang on to it, just in case! Go Saints and thanks for a great season!!!

RESOLUTIONS
2006 has flown by so quickly, it’s hard to comprehend we’re into another year. But we’re here nonetheless and we’ve got a whole new year to deal with. Don’t forget to throw away all your 2006 ink pens and change that 2006 key on your keyboard to 2007. I always forget to do that!!!
With a new year comes “Resolutions”. That evil little conscience that reminds you to do something for the better while deep down inside, you’ll probably last a month, if that long, only to give it up eventually. You’ll make your own though, based on your own life. That’s cool. And if you succeed with it throughout the year, you’ll have my admiration. While you’re running through the possibilities, allow me to suggest a few for your consideration.
Resolve to tell those you love, that you DO love them. Family and friends are important, but that special partner or spouse, your kids, your parents, brother or sister. Let them know that you love them. Hearing it for yourself is tremendous alone. You’ll hear it more often if you say it, just ‘cause.
Resolve to keep your scoot safe, serviced and clean. There’s nothing worse than broke down, in the rain and not a haven in site. Additionally, that special someone may be on the bike of your scoot too, so no reason to trouble them with something you put-off. If you ride motorcycles, understand the creed, then this is obviously a “no-brainer”. But, humans will be humans and routine maintenance doesn’t always end up high on the priorities list.
Resolve to learn more and pay attention to our elected officials and future candidates. We’re in the stretch for a new Presidential election and there should be some other officials up to vote on as well. Complacency never solves anything and I have heard many a bitchin’ and complaining about our government, politicians, officials, etc. from folks all around and the one question I always ask is; “Do you vote?” If you don’t vote, don’t bitch. But keep in mind this very fact: If you aren’t voting, then you’re contributing to the problem. No registered? Then get registered and vote in every election.
Resolve to keep our troops in your thoughts and prayers. We all get involved in our own lives that we forget those who sacrifice for freedom and the security of our country. Regardless of your personal views, our troops need to know everyday how much Americans appreciate their sacrifices. They know full well the prices paid. They are in the shit day in and day out. They see their brothers and sisters pay the ultimate price. They do it because they’ve committed their hearts to the security of America. We owe it to them. Thanks!!

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!
Christmas time is here and everyone oughta be scrambling around looking for those gifts for loved ones. I hope you’ve been good bro’s and babes enough that Santa’s gonna bring those gifts you deserve. From all of us here at Thunder Roads, we’d like to extend to everyone a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Remember to be careful while riding your scoot during this month with all the hustle and bustle-minded cagers out there.
Some news to pass on to everyone that’s worth mentioning is NorthShore Harley-Davidson has changed owners. Mike Bruno, owner of Mike Bruno’s Bayou Country Harley-Davidson has taken ownership, and the dealership is now called Mike Bruno’s NorthShore Harley-Davidson. Congratulations to Mike and the staff. When you get the chance, stop by and pay them a visit. They’ll be glad to see ya.
Some more good news and long anticipated opening is Spahr’s Restaurant in Des Allemands along Hwy 90 East. Many of you recall a fire a couple years back interrupted a long standing tradition for great food and Bloody Mary’s. During those years, ownership changed and several Spahr’s Restaurants opened throughout the area but plans to reopen were already in the works. Well, they’re open now with a new look but the same great service and flavor. Congratulations and Thanks to Brent Roger, Ted Bergeron and Donald Spahr for bringing back a missed tradition. Oh, and before I forget, congrats to Brent and my daughter Celeste’ on your engagement!!! That anticipation was just as intense as waiting for the restaurant to reopen!!! I look forward to having you in the family, Brent.
I would also like to welcome to the Thunder Roads family, Bleu Bayou Harley-Davidson in Monroe, LA. This dealership was purchased in ’97 in El Dorado, AK and moved to West Monroe in January of ’98. Since the name needed to reflect a Louisiana flavor, the name “Bleu Bayou” (Blew By You) was selected. Eighteen months later, the dealership took root at its present location at 6299 Frontage Road. Another event coming up in January will be taking place that involves Discovery Channel’s TLC program, Bike Build Off. While the builders aren’t local, the face-off will be. Stevie Rays Smoking Hot Blues will be the site of the 2 builders, Andrew Williams of Departure Bike-Works out of Virginia and James Compton of Compton Custom Design out of TX on Friday the 12th of January and the 2 builders will compete at No Problem Raceway Park on Saturday the 13th. The Biker Build-Off crew will be filming for their future program so mark your calendar to be there. See this issue for event info.

Get Involved & Give Thanks!!!
This year, November brings us a very important responsibility and privilege, “Elections”. Yes that’s right. That ever-so-boring topic of leaving the comforts of your home, breaking away from your daily routine or interrupting your plans for the day, to head out to the local polling station, verify who you are, sign your name, then walk over to a booth and select the candidates of your choice. How mundane! For the average person (based on national stats), voting seems to draw the least interest of most Americans these days. And this month, America will once again learn just how true that is.
Newspapers throughout the country will publish election results which will divulge the evidence of participating Americans who seriously practice their inalienable right to choose who will represent “US” in government. Facts also show that national elections usually garner the most voter turnout. As promissing as it seems, it’s still no excuse for the low numbers that are responsible for the candidates that win. And combine these numbers with the scary possibility that “non-citizens” are being allowed to vote through the encouragement and mission of those bent on changing America’s way of life, one could seriously conclude that true Americans can expect a future-changing government well beyond our comprehension.
Recent local elections are case in point. In Terrebonne Parish alone, 21% of registered voters turned out to vote on a proposed 1-cent sales tax that would have paid for levees. That measure lost by 208 votes. What does that mean? Many things but most importantly, the levee systems needed to prevent a repeat of flooding in the low-lying areas of the parish will not get the necessary funds to bolster an already weak barrier. So, needless to say, residents will once again turn to national government to literally “bail them out” if they get flooded. I think it’s safe to say that natural disasters don’t get a whole lot of assistance from government anyway. Haven’t we learned our lesson yet? Apparently not. What do you think?
This too should be a message to all candidates! Those of you in office should’ve learned by now that residents aren’t impressed with your efforts. Years of corrupt Louisiana government and personal political agendas have proven our “Lack of Trust in You”! While a lazy approach to elections is no excuse for our low voter turnouts, residents of Louisiana are fed-up with your inability to change Louisiana Politics to the respect it deserves. While you may use this lack of participation to your advantage now, this free ride will bite you in the ass one day.
Readers, in this issue, ABATE has submitted for your review, the candidates and their stances on issues related to motorcycles and the rights of their constituents. Use it freely to your advantage. Then, go to the polls and practice one of the few freedoms your have remaining. Our future depends on it.

A Child Needs Our Help!
Bikers for years have been known to contribute to many a benefit. Good causes are what make us unique in a sense that despite all the stereotyping someone can place on us, sooner or later society turns to bikers for financial help in some way. For that moment, bikers are a generous and committed breed to helping a good cause. Sadly though, once the benefit is over, we once again fade into the background of life only for our generosity to be pursued on another day. Fund raising has expanded beyond the traditional assistance we’ve been used to seeing for years. In most cases, an unfortunate incident affecting a family such as medical expenses, accidents, sicknesses and such are organized and a plea is made to the motorcycling community for assistance. We love a good ride, mingling with friends and having a party. So we come. Nowadays, poker runs are popping up everywhere for all kinds of reasons. Some even to generate operating funds for organizations themselves. Now don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with raising money for your organization to keep it going. That’s how most obtain their funding through donations anyway. And as I mentioned earlier, bikers enjoy an opportunity to ride with friends and spend a few bucks for food, refreshments, prizes and entertainment. But so few and far between are there benefits to assist other bikers. And when these do occur, bikers come in droves.
That’s what I’d like to mention to you this month. On October 15, the doors will open at 4pm to raise money for a special little girl whom a vast majority of us in the biker community know her parents very, very well. Little Kallie Alyssa McGuire, daughter of Jeff & Janine McGuire was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called MPSI or Hurlers Syndrome. It’s a debilitating disease and without treatment, the results can’t be good. Jeff and Janine, as you all know, are the owners of McGuire’s Pit Stop on Jefferson Hwy. in Jefferson, LA. Jeff has maintained the largest bike night on the Gulf Coast for many years and I doubt very seriously, there are many amongst you that haven’t been there at least once in your lifetime. This is THAT time when a fellow biker, a very active one in our community at that, needs our assistance. I think it’s safe to say that Jeff wouldn’t want all this attention brought down on his family, but as friends organizing this event has mentioned, this is about a little girl who deserves to live life to its fullest. Please make a strong effort to attend this event. This is that rare opportunity to help one of our own for a change, whose daughter truly needs our generosity, support, love and prayers. I hope to see you there.

5 Years, I hope you didn’t forget!
Those of you who know me well probably figured sooner or later I’d get on a rant once again. Well, I guess it’s time. Five years ago, this country was violated by extremists hell-bent on destroying our nation. They didn’t succeed on 9/11, but sometimes I wonder what direction it has led our country over the past 5 years and if that wasn’t something they had in mind anyway. Think about it. Our nation is a leader in the fight for Democracy, Human Rights, Freedom, etc. But yet, over the last 5 years there doesn’t seem to be a general consensus regarding the security of this country or the establishment of a government of, by and for the people. What do I mean? Look at voter turnout for example. Of all the countries in the world that hold democratic elections, Americans are responsible for the weakest voter turnouts but yet, those who don’t vote, bitch the loudest! We’re catering more to the voice of the few while the voices of the many have no consideration whatsoever. And politicians have learned to manipulate this lack of participation to their benefit. Can a government that’s supposed to be of, by and for the people maintain that requirement with a 27% voter turnout? I guess not! It can’t even be expected with a 50% voter turnout, although that would be a record-breaker! Keep all this in mind while noting that the largest voter turnouts usually occur only during Presidential elections. Shame on us!
World news is saddening. The war in Iraq, Israel’s war with Hezbollah, Iran and its nuclear pursuits, North Korea’s punk-ass dictator barking on his porch once again, Venezuela’s’ President Chavez talking crap about America while making millions off of its citizens. The list is endless. There are many out there who just flat out don’t like us. Blame it on whoever you want to; the president, senators, congressmen, governors. Doesn’t matter who you want to blame. It all comes down to us. Each and every American living in this country today. It’s up to us to hold elected official accountable. I really don’t care if someone thinks my assessment here is accurate or not, it is however, a legitimate reality: Hezbollah (a terrorist organization and puppet of Iran), came into Southern Lebanon, and seduced these citizens. Built some schools, hospitals, put people to work, fed them, and took care of them. In return, “hide these missiles” or “let me stash these arms in your basement”. Then, they picked a fight...on purpose! Turned around and hid behind the very people they “supposedly” took care of all those years. AND, staged media opportunities for the world to see (this too is fact). Guess who turned out to be the bad guys??? Wasn’t them. Israel was, and so was America. Is anyone paying attention? They’re taking the fight to us. Why? Because we’re Americans, period. And they hold us accountable for our countries’ government. After all, we elected them right? Well a few of us did anyway. Now, do you still think negotiations with a terrorist is a viable possibility? If so, God help us all!

Motorcycles and Class Reunions
As I’m putting the final wrap on this issue, I’m also reminiscing of years past back to those high school days. Yep, I just celebrated my 30 year class reunion with fellow classmates and I have to tell you, these gatherings get better over time.
Needless to say, there were those who weren’t recognized initially and I for one, liked the hell outa that. And of course, was one of those who wasn’t recognized by many at first. I mean, with an earned nickname like “Nappy” originating from my high school days showing up at a reunion 30 years later and “follicly challenged”, it took a while for quite a few old friends to realize who I was. And it was fun watching them figure it out. Especially the ladies.
I say that cause I was never really considered in the “stud” classification back then. Instead, I was pretty much diagnosed with the “nice guy” or “good friend” disease. And for a young teenage boy growing up in the early 70’s, that sucked!!! But that was cool cause although I, like most, hated to go to school, I still consider it to this very day, some of the best years of my life.
When we celebrated our 10 year reunion, it was pretty much the fare of “formal” gathering filed with exhibition of accomplishments and concern for where one was in life through personal achievements. Over those years to present, this attitude or atmosphere relaxed dramatically to where dressing down from Sunday best to shorts, sandals and t-shirts was more the protocol. Now, that’s the way it oughta be from the git-go!
But the one thing I thought was pretty cool was the attitude of classmates learning that I ride motorcycles. Once that was revealed, the faces that lit up and revalations of their last ride on the back of a bike… I’d love to ride one or, I had a bike once then had kids and sold it (but I plan on getting another one once the house is paid off). It broke the ice immediately and in some cases, you coulda swore I was some millionaire. The fact that I rode seemed to intrigue everyone I spoke with and definitely sparked conversation with the ladies (as if we didn’t already know that, right?). But in all the conversations, including those that had that motherly concern for practicing safety while riding, the one thing that was evident was that admoration. Everyone I spoke with expressed a desire to ride. That’s something readers, we all have that they don’t; “The Experience”.
We’re unique! We take the bold step and experience life in the wind. And it’s a feeling we share together and generously share with those who desire it. We all work to maintain our families and our lifestyles. But with all the accomplishments one can make in life, owning a motorcycle can be viewed as more powerful than a position as CEO of a company. And THAT my friends, is something I can live with for the rest of my life and makes me look forward to my 35th. Till then, Ride Free, Ride Safe, but just Ride! God Bless America our Troops and their Families!

We’re Going Through Changes!
Yes we certainly are. And if you’re looking closely, you will notice we have been able to return to an all gloss publication. I know there are several of you who liked the changed format to regular paper instead of gloss. But we started out as a gloss publication and made these changes due to the economical effects of Katrina. We weren’t excited about doing it but it had to be done to sustain the life of Thunder Roads Louisiana. It took 10 months, but we’ve made it through the support of our advertisers, Thunder Roads Publishing and our printer (thanks Harvey!). So, we hope you enjoy the layouts and see our advertiser’s ads in a whole new light cause this format really helps them stand out. And as always, show our advertisers you appreciate their support by visiting and patronizing them often. We at Thunder Roads Thank all of our supporting advertisers for staying with us during these hard times and welcome old and new advertisers as well.
On our Troop Thank You page, you’ll see a copy of a Certificate of Appreciation to the Staff at Thunder Roads from the officers and soldiers in Afghanistan. We’re very proud to help our troops in any way that we can. It’s great to hear from these brave soldiers from time to time and we know any assistance from home that helps them while they’re deployed is a tremendous boost for their morale. So, if you have the opportunity to participate in any Support Packages from your area, please do so. The reward to oneself is a wonderful thing and priceless to those they benefit.
We’d like to introduce 2 new reps to the Thunder Roads family. First is Allen Simon. Allen is from Baton Rouge and an avid rider needless to say. Allen is enthusiastic about jumping on board and we expect quite a bit in contributions to the mag from him. When you meet him, or know him already, please congratulate him on taking on this great opportunity. Allen will be servicing customers throughout the Baton Rouge, Plaquemine, Gonzales, Hammond, and Northshore areas. Our other new rep is actually not new but back on board and that’s the Reverend Chuck Moss. Chuck recently returned to the Lake Charles area and timing worked out well with the unfortunate loss of Starr our newly acquired rep from a few months ago. Chuck is well known to the Lake Charles and surrounding areas so we know he’ll roll right back in with no problems. A special THANK YOU to Al & Martha Naylor for their hard work and dedication to the mag and hope your retirement goes well for you both. We’ll be seeing you soon. SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY HERE!!!
What’s happening Louisiana? Hope all are well and finding you gaining some serious miles on your odometer. I’ve been taking advantage of as much riding time as I can. Got my scoot back from the painters, looking cherry and very unique. I’ve got to tell you baggers are coming around as a cool platform bike for customizing. Special thanks to Roland and Mark of RCC Custom Creation for maintaining their trust in my ideas, communicating very often and providing one kick-ass paint job.
As you should see with this issue, we’ve grown 8 more pages. A combination of new customers and lots more event coverage demanded more pagination and we’re doing our best to accommodate both customer and reader. I hope we’re maintaining that quality for everyone involved. Be sure to thank our supporters when you visit their places of business. As always, they’re the reason we have a magazine laid out especially for you. And we’re hearing from you as well so keep them coming. Participation is the key to keeping Thunder Roads the best and only magazine dedicated to Louisiana Motorcyclists.
Lots of stuff going on this summer and into the fall so find you some entertainment or charity event to support and get going. I’ve received quite a bit of interest in what to expect this year regarding Steel Pony Express and the LA Bike Expo. Many of you have mentioned trying to make contact to no avail. We’ve tried in the past also but have since learned first hand that Scooter Promotions has filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. What’s to become of these two major events? Your guess is as good as mine, but I will venture to say that someone’s event is likely to become the next big gig here in Louisiana. Who’s gonna step up to the plate? Should we hear anymore regarding progress or plans, we’ll keep you posted.
Traffic accidents have been the rage lately in the local news media’s. State Police and area Sheriff & Police Departments have sounded the alarm of increased enforcement of violators of traffic signs, signals, seatbelt, drinking and other safety issues that have gone lax for a long time now. Summer is almost here!!!
Yep! You can feel the heat already. As I am going through this, I’m preparing for the Blast on the Bayou Rally while getting this issue out at the same time. It has been stupid busy lately but it’s all good. I hope everyone has been enjoying the sun shiny days and taking advantage of some excellent riding weather. Mother Nature hasn’t dropped any liquid sunshine as of this time but I’m sure she’s got some wet days in our future.
Rally’s and events are happening on just about every corner and every weekend so aside from that solo ride or group ride to nowhere, if you’re looking for something to do, check out the calendar and visit our website for the extended version to make plans ahead. May is offering some cool events such as the 3rd Annual Music & Biker Bash in Marksville, Inaugural Riders of the Storm Mother Nature You Didn’t Win Bike Rally in Alexandria, Blazin Bikes Motorcycle Rally in Lake Charles, 2nd Annual Grant A Wish Rally in Central LA, 2nd Annual Coonass Blowout in Belle Rose, 1st Annual Memorial Day Pre-Hurricane Biker Party in Mt. Hermon, Memorial Day Blowout in Gulfport, MS and then of course is Myrtle Beach Bike Week in South Carolina. And let’s not forget the number of poker runs and benefits all in between. Something is definitely there for you to indulge in or support. Another date to consider is Mothers Day on the 14th so definitely don’t forget that one! Another date I saw on my calendar is the 22nd, Victoria Day. I haven’t figured that one out. All I can think of is guys, go out and by your wife, girlfriend or main squeeze some Victoria’s Secret drawers or lingerie. Until I figure that one out, I’d settle for the lingerie gift giving idea. Try it out and let me know how it works for you!!!
We’ve got some post event coverage showing this month and with the amount of activities we covered last month, some of these will be in the next issue. Please be patient and allow us this inconvenience but rest assured, the events we covered will publish. We hate that we can’t add more to the mag but economics dictate this and we’re making the best of a tough situation much like all the rest of the businesses. Recent trips in and around the New Orleans areas have proven that life still is far from being normal. And the surrounding areas such as those in New Orleans East, Arabi, Chalmette and other areas worthy of mention are still in serious disarray. But not surprising is the tenacity of the people who live there. Everyone we meet all are upbeat about their situations and are focused on returning to normal. It’s a sad day that our government both local and national cannot get through all the red tape, political conflicts and plain ole bullshit and see to it those who are in need get taken care of. The aftermaths and restructuring has presented some very unfortunate situations within our communities. FEMA trailers are catching fire with some loss of life. Traffic crashes have increased what seems to be tenfold and the deaths occurring from these have risen tremendously. Townships are feeling the burden of increased traffic activity within their own respective communities with no relief in site. All we can ask is that while riding your scoot be very aware of your surroundings and other drivers because all indications prove today’s drivers are not paying attention. So be careful wherever you ride cause even the back roads aren’t as safe as they used to be. Sometimes, the interstate route seems the best choice of all. (Unless you’re in Baton Rouge). A report provided by Progressive Insurance ranks Baton Rouge 3rd in the nation in the likelihood of a motorcycle rider has a crash. In that same report, New Orleans is ranked 6th. Aside from more awareness of motorcycles on highways and roadways, safe operation is the key. Sad thing about all of this is that while motorcyclists are required to wear helmets, there are still deaths occurring. And what makes it even worse is crash data comes out way too late to lock in on the major problems. As motorcyclists we are very much aware that a vast majority of the crashes occur at the front area of the motorcycle and two-thirds are attributed to the fault of the other driver, the motorist. The attitude behind the wheel of a car is still a challenge to change. And while amenities and other distractions take the focus of the driver away from the main responsibility of driving, respect for other vehicles remain at the bottom of the list.
As of this publication, the wheels are turning to impose stricter fines and punishments for right of way violators. HB 694 introduced by Rep. Mert Smiley, Jr-Rep. establishes higher fines and penalties. Killing a biker or another driver no longer will have a “cheap” price if this bill passes. Although the fines should be more than proposed, any increase is an improvement to what’s currently in place. And the word that best describes the current fine fees would be “prehistoric”! On the flipside of all this, another bill, HB 1 introduced by Rep. John Alario, Jr.-Dem. steals $131,576.00 from the LA Department of Education’s Motorcycle Safety, Awareness & Operator Training Program Fund. These valuable classes are threatened with total annihilation simply for the intention of obtaining disaster relief for the state. “Hypocritical” in its presentation, this bill if it succeeds will destroy 30 years of admired efforts known nation-wide. And not to mention a “Slap in the Face” of every motorcyclist who’ve faced governmental efforts to a supposed desire to save our lives. And with Gov. Blanco making the helmet issue her first priority in office after her election, by the time you read this, she’s liable to have signed off on its passing. Taking away sources to improve our driving skills and continuing to impose prehistoric penalties for taking a person’s life due to irresponsible driving habits is counterproductive to the “sincere concerns for our safety” as expressed by most of our state’s Representatives, Senators and you, Madam Governor. Do the right thing for a change!

It’s a New Year!
Well yea, that was 4 months ago but for us, we’re moving into our third year of publishing. It’s exciting to say the least and it looks like life is finally breathing into the event season. April and May are kickin with stuff to do. And not too soon! We’ve been cooped up with open weekends and bro’s out there are pretty much ready to drop the honey-dos and get to some serious fun! Check out the calendar for a good time near you.
A vast majority of us know the common experiences and places we share bring us together as a family. There’s a tremendous mix of lifestyles associating together at shops, runs, shows, local taverns, rally’s or just sharing the road together. The bonds are automatic when bikers congregate. Of course these bonds may vary in its intensity but even if it’s a slight bond that’s recognized, it still happened
You have come to learn that riding affects us physically, emotionally and at times spiritually. There is no denial of it. It exists inside each and every one of us. It’s hard to believe sometimes that you will run into that one individual who after riding for several years and associating with this vast family of unique individuals, they still haven’t learned the real meaning of being a part of the motorcycling community. They place a distance between them and the “image”. So much so, they don’t recognize it in others who ride.
Recently, I ran into a person with whom a conversation shortly determined that both of us ride motorcycles. He didn’t know who I was (and I never led on either), and I didn’t know him. But the situation allowed us ample opportunity to talk “shop” if you will. Eventually, it dawned on me that this person, loved riding, but didn’t really like hanging around “the ones that wear the leather with all those patches and stuff. You know the kind, the really scruffy looking bikers”. Okay, well let’s see. Just who might this guy be talking about? So, I figured I’d have a little fun to see where he was going with this. In the process of asking questions, extending the conversation and just letting this guy share all his expertise with me regarding the biker community, I learned who these scruffy folks were.
Seems the guy wound up at a HOG Rally (now mind you, this has been a while) and saw all these HOG patches, Motorcycle Ministry patches, a few other organizations. Based on his conclusions, this was a rough bunch of cowboys and he had to leave because he was uncomfortable. Now mind you, I’m checking this guy out and he doesn’t seem out of the ordinary to me. I mean riders come to my office quite often. Not everyone is recognizable during business hours, but come the weekend or a bike night, you recognize them in their gear.
So I figure I’ll continue to have a bit of fun with this and ask if they consider themselves a biker. “Oh, hell no! I’m a motorcyclist.” Okay, but you ride correct? “Of course I ride. I ride very often”. So then, what about the general public, the cagers on the highway? Aren’t you concerned at all that they look at you as a biker? “But I’m not a biker; I’m a rider….an enthusiast”. Okay so, I admit to the guy I consider myself a biker. “You belong to one of those gangs?” Well, I maintain my HOG membership, but ride independent. (the eyebrow rises, like I’m being elusive abo |
