Oh, the Humanity!!!
Johnstown, PA: Local and state police scoured the hills outside rural Johnstown, Pennsylvania, after reports of three animal rights activists going missing after attempting to protest the wearing of leather at a large motorcycle gang rally this weekend. Two others, previously reported missing, were discovered by fast food workers "duct taped inside several fast food restaurant dumpsters," according to police officials. "Something just went wrong," said a still visibly shaken organizer of the protest. "Something just went horribly, horribly, wrong."
The organizer said a group of concerned animal rights activist groups, "growing tired of throwing fake blood and shouting profanities at older women wearing leather or fur coats," decided to protest the annual motorcycle club event "in a hope to show them our outrage at their wanton use of leather in their clothing and motor bike seats." "In fact," said the organizer, "Motorcycle gangs are one of the biggest abusers of wearing leather, and we decided it was high time that we let them know that we disagree with them using it... Ergo, they should stop."
According to witnesses, protesters arrived at the event in a vintage 1960's era Volkswagen van and began to pelt the gang members with balloons filled with red colored water, simulating blood, and shouting "you're murderers" to passers by. This, evidently, is when the brouhaha began.
"They peed on me!!!" charged one activist. "They grabbed me, said I looked like I was French, started calling me 'La Trene', and duct taped me to a tree so they could pee on me all day! I... I was trying to show my outrage at a man with a heavy leather jacket. And, he... he didn't even care. I called him a murderer, and all he said was, 'You can't prove that.' Next thing I know is he forced me to ride on the back of his motorcycle all day, and not left me off, because his girl friend was out of town and I was almost a woman." Still others claimed they were forced to eat hamburgers and hot dogs under duress. Those who resisted were allegedly held down while several bikers "farted on their heads."
Police officials declined comments on any leads or arrests due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. However, rganizers for the motorcycle club rally expressed "surprise" at the allegations. "That's preposterous," said one high ranking member of the biker organizing committee. "We were having a party, and these people showed up and were very rude to us. They threw things at us, called us names, and tried to ruin the entire event. So, what did we do? We invited them to the party! What could be more friendly than that? You know, just because we are all members of motorcycle clubs does not mean we do not care about inclusiveness. Personally, I think it shows a lack of character for them to be saying such nasty things about us after we bent over backwards to make them feel welcome."
When confronted with the allegations of force feeding the activists meat, using them as ad hoc latrines, leaving them incapacitated in fast food restaurant dumpsters, and 'farting on their heads,' the organizer declined to comment in detail. "That's just our secret handshake," assured the organizer.

A Victory for America, A Victory for Louisiana!
Love her or hate her, Sarah Palin was recently derided by MSNBC and others for her choice of founding father, George Washington. Her choice did come after being asked who her choice was and she replied how she was amazed all the founders from such diverse backgrounds came together for the common good of founding our nation. The funny thing about her answer was in fact a truly accurate response in her Washington choice in founding father favorite. MSNBC Political contributor, Mika Brzezinski idiotically announced Abraham Lincoln as her favorite founding father while disparaging Palin’s answer. Nothing like illustrating ignorance in front of other panel speakers and a viewing public.
Tea Party protestors are another group accused of being anti-American, nazi’s and terrorists and just as insulting, funded and organized by the Republican Party. None of which is anywhere close to accurate in describing all these folks. But this past month, Massachusetts voters showed who’s boss by electing newcomer and Republican Scott Brown over Martha Coakley (D) by a popular vote of 51.9% to 47.1%. And it could be said Brown did it by simply reminding the debate interviewer who the seat truly belonged to. When CNN’s David Gergen asked Brown if he’d be willing to sit in Teddy Kennedy’s seat and (say) I’m going to be the person who’s going to block it [liberal health care policy] for another 15 years, Brown reminded Gergen “Well, with all due respect, it’s not the Kennedy’s seat, and it’s not the Democrats seat, it’s the people’s seat”. And this simple but accurate statement will be the litmus test for elections to come. But there are those who feel the Tea Party movement is to open the stage for another political party. Fact is nothing could be further from the truth. TP protestors consist of Americans of all races, religions and political affiliations. The goal of TP protestors is to encourage and secure public policy consistent with fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government and free markets. This is a simple, basic and realistic approach to Americans’ civic responsibility at local levels and once again getting involved in government.
HOLD DA PRESSES!!!!!! Who Dat Said de Gonna Beat Them Saints!!!! Saint’s vs. Colts in the SUPER BOWL!!!! I’m wrapping this column up after joining the state of Louisiana along with Americans all over the nation watch the Saints play their hearts out against the Vikings!!! Our boys were strong, our boys were focused, And OUR BOYS WERE MOTIVATED!!! Hell better get their thermal blankets ready cause the A/C has been turned on full blast.
Congratulations to the Saints…..congratulations to the city of New Orleans….. Congratulations to the State of LOUISIANA!!! There are no words to describe the jubilation felt throughout the state. The Saints fans have been waiting for this for many, many years. And I believe in my heart, as well as many of you out there that the New Orleans Saints not only dedicated themselves to a winning season for the team, but they also did it, and graciously, for the City of New Orleans. Saints fans know full well, their team dedicates this season to us. We will go into history as the 12th player! Thank you Coach Peyton, and Thank You New Orleans Saints!!! On to the Super Bowl!!!

Dumb Luck???
That’s the only explaination for it, dumb luck. And the Nigerian Terrorist lost his jewels instead of accomplishing his mission. Should we be excited? Yes, but only because lives were not lost. The rest of our disgust should be directed to the pathetic performance of our Homeland Security Department and the “HMFIC”, Janet Napolitano. Hell, quick-thinking civilians performed more effectively than our own security entities. Is that what we’ve been forced into? Protecting ourselves because our own government can’t protect us? So much for the system “working” eh Janet?
Even more disgusting is the fact that due to our Politically Correct means of governing, two other Terrorist attacks occurred on US soil in 2009, both on military property! Back in June, William Long a new recruit lost his life when a terrorist opened fire on and killed him while wounding another soldier at a recruiting center.
Then in November, Fort Hood was devastated when 13 soldiers along with the unborn child (the 14th victim) of Pfc. Fracheska Velez were murdered when another terrorist (an army soldier at that), opened fire on fellow soldiers wounding an additional 30. In the meantime, we American’s were asked not to rush to judgement on these cases because they needed to sort through all the carnage to determine if this “incident” did indeed warrant the lable of a “terrorist attack”! The residents of Caimbridge should rejoice that their police force has gained a more professional approach to enforcing the law these days based on this same profound wisdom.
Nothing to see here folks, please move along and pay no attention to the man with the gun yelling Alah Akbar!
Our government looks to its citizens to help in reporting activities and suspicious behavior that could be detremental to the security and stability of our country. It amazes how adamant our government is in pursuing the negatives that are circulating about their claimed misrepresentations on health care, but a parent can call and report his son is acting in such a manner that could kill hundreds, if not thousands and it doesn’t raise the ire of not one person that could make the decision to prevent carnage of epic proportions. What good is it to report this stuff if our government won’t take thier responsibility to its people seriously? Is America’s reluctance to profile contributing to our enemies’ enthusiasm to pursue more carnage? This recent failed attempt of mass-murder didn’t fail based on our governments’ abilities to foil it. It failed because the bomber’s weapon failed. That’s the ONLY reason. This is one time we can feel some comfort in knowing their quality assurance department sucks big-time. The IRA had a saying “You (government) have to be lucky all the time, while we (the terrorist) only have to be lucky once”. This mantra still remains the quote of choice for all terrorists. And make no mistake America, we are at war with Terrorists. The majority of Americans know this. And because the term majority is relevant to a Democratic society, it demands our respect and attention. Until our government stops its condescension of Americans and “gets it”, we’ve the responsibility to make them “get it” through the polls. 2010 is here. The first phase in getting our country back. The second phase of this is two years away. The time is now to start doing our homework for the test in November.

Reasons to Celebrate & Giving Thanks
With December upon us and a new year around the corner, it goes without saying that we must all take a moment to give thanks and celebrate the many gifts we have in our lives. As simple as it may sound, taking time out of a busy day to reflect on the blessings we have is a very important step in welcoming in a new year and preparing for what’s ahead. Not to mention how humbling it is to realize we are surrounded by many who not only count on us, but love and support us dearly.
Here at Thunder Roads Magazine LA, 2009 has presented some serious challenges for us and for our customers as well. The economy has affected you, our readership just the same so that puts us all in similar situations that present challenges we’ve not seen for some time. What we envision is a strong support for one another coming into the New Year. We celebrate and give thanks to our supporting advertisers for keeping TRMLA going full-force over the past five-plus years while giving thanks to our readership for keeping our motivations strong as we slowly work our way into six years of publishing. We once again stress to our readership the importance of supporting our advertisers by patronizing their businesses and letting them know you appreciate their support each month when you visit them. This Christmas, give them the support they need by filling those stockings with the special gifts only our advertisers can provide.
Rally season has passed us and ahead you’ll see in our calendar of events that there are many toy runs and poker run benefits that could use your support. Take a moment to check out the schedules and do what you can to bring some happiness to those less fortunate in these difficult times.
As we witness this year come to a close, we want to once again thank each and every one of you both reader and advertiser for over five years of trust and support. We are grateful for the new friendships over the last year. And this year brought together some friendships from long past. There was something special about 2009 that brought fellow riders out and about rekindling those relationships established long ago.

And for me, I am thankful for many things in my life. For my love, Brenda as we celebrated one year of marriage, I am blessed with the comfort of knowing I have both a wife and best friend to grow up, and old with. Thanks baby for believing in me and loving me unconditionally.
And for our family, I am grateful to you for being who you are. And we are especially grateful for the announcement of a new family addition. My oldest daughter Celeste’ and her husband Brent are expecting their first child. That’s right y’all!!! We’re gonna have a grandson! So, while I am not only excited that we’re gonna spoil the heck out of this lil dude, I’m also grateful to all of you grandparents out there who’ve given us valuable insight on what life is like with grandchildren. We hope to do you proud.

You know, for several years now I’d bring up helmet law issues and discuss the pro’s and con’s of legislation, safety and for what I consider the biggest consideration; Freedom. And the issue of freedom is the emphasis that I believe is our inalienable right. And I want the freedom to choose. But here’s the problem people:
Our battles have been lost and I dare say it; were lost to a complacent public. 'Public' being the biker community. That’s you and me. And I always said that our freedom to choose is becoming one of the fastest deteriorating freedoms that by our Declaration of Independence as well as the Bill of Rights and our Constitution are built for “We the People”. Well, guess what folks? Wake up and smell the coffee cause they’re coming for more!
Right now the big news (unless you’re living under a rock) is Health Care Reform. There’s much to iron-out but Government run healthcare is coming to a community near you and if you refuse, or your current care is not government approved, you get taxed fined. Of course, the facts change daily but the fact remains, government forces you to have health care. It’s no longer YOUR choice.
We’re used to sin taxes already. Taxes on cigarettes and liquor. What do you think about taxes on sodas? Yep, government feels that sodas are bad for you, it makes you fat, your obesity becomes a burden on society so, we’re gonna drop the hammer on you and make you quit drinking corn syrup and sugars. Or else, you’ll pay for it, literally! We’re gonna “healthyfi you”! What about that thick, juicy burger and those awesome fries? NOT! Government already said they’re gonna healthyfi you so say bye-bye to your favorite drive-thru or be willing to pay for it in dollars and cents.
Love to surf the internet? Who doesn’t right? Government says they need to control communications medium of an environment originally intended for free spread of information. Remember “free speech”? Think about it.
Do you hunt? Do you believe in protection of your family and yourself as well as your property? Been purchasing any guns or ammo lately? Those of you who do, I’m sure you’ve seen your share of increased prices overnight! Almost 50% increases? Yea, guns and ammo are hard to find and taxed out the ass! Pay attention folks! Next, government is after your right to protect yourself or hunt.
There’s more to say and discuss but I’m outa room. But ponder this until my next possible rant: The problem with government (well one of the problems), is it tends to get its hand into the private sector and take it over. And once they get their hands on it, they never let it go and always find ways to increase it. And a lot of what’s in that private sector is your property, your money, your life. Are you ready to give up that choice? Did you let them take helmet choice away from us? Hmmmm……
In the meantime, our military needs action and support from our government. They can’t afford to wait. Make your voice heard and let our elected officials know either get our military what they ask for or bring them home! In the meantime, while Washington “thinks”, our sons and daughters are dying!

Remembering What it’s All About
This month, part one of a two-part story is a feature that’s been a long time coming. “Road Trip: Two Bro’s and the Trace” talks about our quest to ride the Natchez Trace.
My best bro Harris and I took a guy’s weekend and hit the Trace, for the pure ride and that was all it was meant to be. I have to laugh at myself as there are so many of our readers that have multitudes of these under their belts. Well, I for one, aren’t lucky enough to just pick up and ride till I come back. What a wonderful world this would be if we could all do it, right? But I’m blessed with a woman who understands and we do a lot together which makes a difference. And, I know she loves girl get-togethers as well and she too should have her fun so we are so cool with one another when it comes to special events such as this.
But this ride for Harris and I was the medicine the doctor ordered. It was 20+ years ago when he and I would have our official “Monday Safety Meetings” and there were many of those that involved talk of buying a motorcycle. For us, the brand was Harley. We talked about it all the time, what we’d own, how we’d customize them, what we’d do, where we’d go. The whole ball of wax! Ten years later, it was a virtual race to see who’d buy theirs first. I came in second but none of that mattered. It was so funny cause his wife Debbie told me (one day when I was inches close to buying mine before he’d get his), “you wouldn’t do that to your best friend, buying your bike before him?” I told her “hell yea, he’d do it to me without batting an eye!” And ultimately, that he did! Yea, we were working hard to buy those scoots. It’s almost like deer fever when you’re inches from buying that motorcycle you’ve been obsessing for years.
But owning these bikes brought our friendship to the next level. Bro’s on their motorcycles with knees in the breeze. We did lots of trips, but our ladies were there. And I’m certainly not knocking that whatsoever! Having our women with us made it great! But ironically, we never did any trips with substantial distances. It’s just how things went, and it was all good!
Fast forward to 2008 and here we are finally packing up for a road trip involving 4 states. A long time coming. From the moment we hit the road heading north, the world around us became heaven. Not a care in the world, not a worry in the soul. What became the dominating factor was the fact that we were in that special zone that only a few of the fortunate understand. Bikers, motorcycle enthusiasts, riders; whatever label one puts on themselves is not as important as understanding the feeling of oneness with a machine and the open road. But this is not about trying to describe the feeling cause I’m preaching to the choir.
No, this is about remembering what owning a motorcycle is all about. It’s about bringing friends together to experience what few have the privilege of being able to do. It’s about reinforcing your friendships and shaping your karma. It’s about rekindling your relationship with your creator or your philosophy. It even reinforces the love and affection you have with the one you love. This is so good for the soul. It’s a freedom, not to be taken for granted.
Thank you readers, for sharing your inspirations that made us take the challenge. Thanks Harris for being my brutha from another mutha. Thanks Brenda and Debbie for being generous with your love and trust. Thank God for safe travels for all our brothers and sisters. And thanks to our military for protecting our freedoms, allowing us to travel freely within these great United States!

Oh Crap, Americans are paying attention!
Do you feel it? That tingle, that feeling of strength? Your eyebrow dips with determination, your mind feels sharp and you’re aware of your senses. And, people around you feel it too! Including me. I’m thinking, Empowerment!
I’m feeling pretty damn good right now about the American people, our state, our communities, our family and friends. We are speaking out, a practice in the freedom of speech, and we’re putting our leaders in check. And they are paying attention, but stubborn as they may, some are holding on to that desperate belligerence that WILL be their downfall.
We’re dealing with a different country today. The latest news if you’ve been watching is everyday Americans are attending Town Hall Meetings and voicing their concerns to their elected officials and they’re not going to allow a condescending tone in the answers. Americans are out there, getting involved in their country. It’s happening before our very eyes. This can be historical so you need to pay close attention to everything that is happening.
What is most disgraceful is the hostility being played out in our government and its leaders. Americans addressing the problems with our country are being cast as mobs, embracing and displaying Nazi symbols, right-wing extremists, stooges, stupid, a set-up and (I love this one): unpatriotic! They say the rage is fake, and these Americans are too. And what is the White House saying to their minions? “If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard.” In other words, the White House is calling out the dogs! You can’t tell me that our government isn’t encouraging the attack on its own citizens? When in history can anyone tell me that this happened before? NEVER! The gall, the unadulterated belligerence and arrogance from a group of individuals who disgrace their oath to the Constitution of the United States of America and the trust of the “MAJORITY” of the American people! How dare you disgrace the integrity of our country! How dare you desecrate the oath you swore to uphold! How DARE you disrespect our sons and daughters who have sacrificed for our freedoms and the strength of this country and its citizens? Notwithstanding, those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice! You represent the voice of the American People and you are expected to represent the “MAJORITY” of the people you serve. We will remember your track records come 2010 & 2012, I promise!!!
On the evening of August 6, 2009 at Rep. Russ Carnahan’s town meeting in St. Louis County, Kenneth Gladney was assaulted by four SEIU representatives who were arrested for assault and rightly so, Kenneth’s attorney is promising litigation. This is almost worth stating it was “the punch heard round the world”. This incident is being considered the first example of bully tactics not chastised, but rather encouraged by the White House.
I have faith y’all. I believe the American people will stand up to these bullies and not sit idly by allowing our freedoms to be crushed. Hillary Clinton said it best: “I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you’re not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration.” I appreciate her reminding us all that we all have that right. Unfortunately for her and the rest of the gang, it probably wasn’t intended to be resurrected during this current administration. Oops! My bad!

Preparing for the Comfortable Season
for Riding
You gotta love August going into the autumn and winter months. We all know
how hot as hell it can get sitting on twin cylinders but realizing the best “A/C”
in the world comes from the wind in your face. The fall months just make it
better own here in Louisiana. Year round riding eason!
There are some excellent events coming up over the course of the next few
months. and with all the BS, rhetoric and drama going on outside the riding
world, these would be some great “get the world’s problems off my shoulders
runs ” anyone could eagerly consider (these events are listed in the COE):
From 8/8 to 9/8 is The Honor run ride which supports our Military Heroes.
There’s cross country routes to consider full or partial participation. Gary
Sinese ’s band the LT. Dan Band will be providing entertainment.
Other events in August is the annual Bare Biker Blowout in case you bikers
who love living life in your birthday suits. Nothing like having your exposed
jewels next to hot jugs! (hey, not them kinda jugs).. Some pretty babes wash-
ing your ride at Affordable Leather Co ’s bike and car wash. A 1st ever Men’s
Garage Party at Bossier City H-D (these been normally for the ladies) and a
Poker run in Slidell for the Naval Special Warfare Foundation.
September events include the best biker party in the south, 9th Annual Labor
Day Biker Party at the Rockin M Event Center in Sandy Hook MS. The Veter-
ans ride from Anacoco La to Hemphill TX. The Red Knights 911 Poker run
at Visitation of Our Lady Church in Marrero La. If you’re into racing, NHRA
Lucas Oil Drag racing Series at No Problem Raceway Park, or you can
party at the 6th annual Summer Biker Bash in Lake Charles La. Maybe you
can support the 4th annual Dixie Thunder run in Meridian MS, supporting
injured soldiers and their families during Iraqi Freedom. One of the fastest
growing poker runs, the 3rd annual Dutch Battle Memorial ride in downtown
Hammond La benefiting the Hammond area MAC. Thunder Road’s own
Pastor Woody and the 9th Annual Biker Sunday at White Dove Fellowship
in Harvey brings bikers together for fun and fellowship. A great family event
should you love to bring the kids.
There’s many more ahead in October on into December. Remember, if your

Just a Friendly Reminder…..
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Amendment I - Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Amendment II - A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Amendment III - No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
Amendment IV - The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Amendment V - No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
Amendment VI - In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.
Amendment VII - In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.
Amendment VIII - Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

Will Louisiana Bikers Have a Choice?
Well readers,once again the helmet choice issue has come to the forefront
and based on Gov.Jindal ’s opinions on the matter and the influences in our
favor,this should pass the Senate with little resistance.2009 may be the year
for adult bikers to once again have the freedom to choose lids or no lids.
Of course this brings up all kinds of issues from the pro-helmet as well as
the pro-choice crowds.And do realize,they both exist in the motorcycling
community as there are many strong supporters of helmet use within our
community.And this is the beauty of the whole issue.
For me personally,(and I speak for myself only),I value the ability to choose.
And that ability to choose for oneself is of vital importance.We are all adults
and when we choose to fire up our scoots and hit the road for work or plea-
sure we understand and accept all the possibilities that exist when you mix
motorcycles with cages.For several years now,we ’ve been under the law
of helmet use and when you get right down to the verbiage that exists in the
current law,it is truly a weak and useless law requirement that contains the
bare minimum with little direction for specific helmet types.Such has always
been the rule of thumb with LA politics and our helmet law.But there still ex-
isted a sadly large amount of bikers killed while riding and statistics will prove
over time (cause it takes forever for the NHTSA to provide the numbers)that
most,if not all were killed wearing helmets.
But “choice ”is the key and becomes one of the few freedoms we will have
control over.And the debate will continue.We as riders will be scrutinized
over time for our choices but the question will still remain;“will there be stron-
ger enforcement of focused driving ahead for all people who travel on our
roads and highways?”Only time will tell.In the meantime,should the law
pass in our favor to choose,please ride aware and safe at all times!While
I believe in the right to choose,I also acknowledge awareness of the con-
sequences.Make “your own ”choice and don ’t base it on the influence of
others.It is your choice to make.
On another note,I recently had the opportunity to meet a woman who is
working dilligently on all our behalf,while pursuing justice for her own fam-
ily.Amy Pickholtz,the widow of Jim Pickholtz who was killed when Mayor
Brenda Melancon of Sorrento,LA violated Jim ’s right of way.We published
Amy ’s article and their daughter ’s article a few issues back to share with our
readers.In a recent article in the Gonzales Weekly Citizen,Mayor Melancon
was heard saying after the hearing “I ’m glad that it ’s over ”.This statement
was not only a blow to Amy and her family,but it is a blow to every motorcy-
clist ’s surviving family.It is never over for the survivors.Never!And to be a
public official and express this insensitive attitude openly is a disgrace to the
position.But then again,since when do public officials take their constituents
into consideration.
There is a scheduled Town Council Meeting on June 16th at 6:00pm on Main
Street in Sorrento,LA.This is the last official meeting that Mayor Brenda Mel-
ancon will be conducting.Amy has decided that she will attend the meeting
to let Mayor Melancon know that “It is NOT over ”.Amy has committed further
to investigating the case.She is a strong advocator for MAC and is looking
for support from the motorcycling community through attendance during this

ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
I don’t know about you but I’ve had enough of this “blame America” theme that has dominated the format of the recent “Apology Tour” overseas by our illustrious leader.
Listen, I’ve got no problem supporting our President and frankly don’t want his leadership to fail but all this attitude that America created the ills of other countries is foolish and in virtually all the cases, an out-and-out falsehood. And it’s not just the President laying this diatribe out for all to embrace.
Recently, S-of-State H. Clinton made the statement that 90% of the weapons used to commit crimes in Mexico came from the US. The real “FACTS” are in (or rather, had been in even when she made the claim) in that the truth is; only 17% of guns found at Mexican crime scenes are traceable to the US. The use of the percentage “90%” in reality is that of the 5,114 guns Mexico submitted to the US for tracing out of a total of 29,000 guns recovered at crime scenes in Mexico from ’07-‘08. The rest of the guns come from the black market via Russian, S. American, Asian, Guatemala crime organizations AND even the Mexican Army (150,000 total deserters in the last 6 years). There’s more statistics that back up this reality. Wonder if there’s an agenda on gun control maybe???
But back to this confession tour. President Obama has apologized on 3 continents for what he considers the mortal sins of America and especially his predecessors. For a person who campaigned on “looking forward”, he and his piers sure love to blame the past administration on a virtual daily basis don’t they? But listen, this apologetic theme he used to some of these countries were the very countries our brave soldiers spilled blood on their behalf! Is this not a kick in the groin? By the way, don’t forget Armed Forces Day on May 16th.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown stated the economic order dominated by the US was over. Brown said, “The old Washington consensus is over. I think a new world order is emerging with the foundation of a new progressive era of international cooperation”. Even French President Sarkozy and German Chancellor Merkel declared Europe would no longer follow America’s lead on setting the global economic agenda. They both called for a “new financial architecture” that would subject the US financial system to European regulations. And their demands were not negotiable. Amazing the outpouring of graciousness and willingness to work with the US coming out of these countries we went to war to protect.
And now, to make things even more enticing for our enemies, our government wants to paste photos of prisoner interrogations all over the mainstream media cheerleading squads, as a show of diplomacy and a gain of “new love” for America by our European counterparts.
And in the meantime, millions of Americans came together for Tea Parties as a sign of concern for government spending, tax laws and outright concern for our futures. Instead, these Americans were poo-poo’d by the mainstream media as a bunch of right-wing extremists and angry republicans organized by the right-wing Fox News network. And of course, our current leaders sucked it up as nothing to be concerned with and went on about their business of blaming America for the world’s problems.
I can only pray (and you should too) that come 2010; Americans flood the polls and begin cleaning out this mess of political agendas that routinely spit on the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights. I’m surprised Obama hasn’t given these two documents away. It’s obvious our government isn’t using them anymore.

America ’s Weapon of
Mass Self-Destruction
You ’ve heard the term,you know the name,but do you understand its
purpose?As simple and seemingly odious in nature,Political Correctness
is the fundamental declination of communities.
While on the surface,Political Correctness ’ intention looks innocent
in its presentation in a culture that is not scarred by its ultimate effects.
But in reality and through documented history,Political Correctness has
destroyed the basic fundamentals of truth,clear thinking,and plain speech
from the general population for years.Governments have used this mask
for suppression as their mantra and abused targeted members of society
by utilizing theme as their weapons via mob rule.
It is in essence,an attack upon truth,restriction on expression,or direct
suppression of speech that is not parallel to the goals of those who savor
control.And the puppet extensions can be found in the media ’s and various
portions of society that feel the need of support from same through outright
selfishness.They have their own agenda and mentality that claims that
all cultures are compatible,and with this;anyone who contradicts this
are blinded by prejudice against other cultures and ultimately are bigots,
enemies of the community/humanity and truly deserving of persecution.
And this social declination destroys the very fabric of a common sense
society.If plain speech is continually suppressed,then you loose your
sense of clear thinking.Freedom of speech,Freedom of expression is our
right as was the purpose of the creation of this country.These freedoms
are truly worth dying for.Because if they are lost,you will experience what
is truly known to be a member of the “walking dead ”.Those who champion
Political Correctness understand nothing of the implications of what they
promote much less why the promote it.They will,in the end become
slaves to the very lie they ’ve championed.This mantra existed through
the Nazi ’s,during the Communist Revolution,declination of governments
throughout the world.You see it today through terrorism (the new “four
letter word ”)and it ’s rearing its ugly head in our own country,and has for
many years.Can you see yet?Can you smell its stench?Or better yet;are
you hearing rumblings of the restructuring of our Constitutional Rights?
Hearing terminology being changed on behalf of the sensitivity of others,
(true enemies to be precise)?
Author Philip Atkinson describes the inevitable result of political correctness,
“By using the excuse of not upsetting anyone,the politically correct are
demanding that people behave like the fool who would please everyone;
that everyone must become such a fool!All must accept the notions of
the Politically Correct as truth,or else!This is the same mentality that
inspired the Inquisition and forced Galileo to recant;the same mentality
that inspired the Nazis and obtained the Holocaust.Once expression gets
placed in a straitjacket of official truth,then the madness that occurs in
all totalitarian states is obtained.Life,in private and public,becomes a
meaningless charade where delusion thrives and terror rules ”.
Do not be fooled into thinking this is simply a change in society that ’s as
simple as a change in nature.It is indeed an agenda that takes years to
sculpt and does have a selfish purpose.Do not allow yourself to be a puppet
to this nor think this is some conspiracy theory.It is happening everyday.
Open your eyes and you will see its effects.You ’ve seen it already ….but
do you recognize what your eyes reveal?Stand up for your rights America!

WHEN DOES IT END?
Congress,in all their infinite wisdom (and powered by the Democratic
machine)rolls out the red carpet to every special interest group when they
unveilled their stimulus package totalling over $800 billion.Some of the
strangest recipients are already standing in line for their share of the lottery
monies.
The list is appauling to say the least and you have to wonder just how
much of these “endowments ”is supposed to stimulate job growth in a
descending economy.Some of the special interests that are awaiting these
funds include $25 million for new ATV trails,$400 million for the National
Endowment for the Arts,$400 million for global warming research,$335
million for the Centers for Disease Control to combat sexually-transmitted
diseases and a whopping $650 million in coupons to subsidize TV viewers
for digital TV conversions.And while learning all these recipients stand
to gain their piece of the pie,we ’re supposed to feel that the House
Democratic leaders where “looking out for our best interest ”when they
reluctantly removed 2 programs that drew fire such as $200 million for a
new contraception service and $20 million to renovate the National Mall.
No jobs there right?Well,at least the best known dollar value dedicated to
true infrastructure spending is $30 billion.Damn,I feel much better now!
What ’s in this for Louisiana?Hell,not much.While $4.5 billion is heading
towards the Army Corps of Engineers,they ’ve got a back log of $61 billion
in projects.That ’s nothing when you consider what ’s needed to get projects
going such as the Morganza-to-the-Gulf hurricane protection project,which
is still on paper and not in process real-time.Well,I was feeling better there
for a little while.
Anyway,this constant money pitching our government does is certain to
bite us in the ass.While the first bailouts have had no effect whatsoever
other than to line the pockets of CEO ’s and buying out the competion,
Americans who have now become shareholders in these gratuities have no
say-so much less access to the so-called transparency that doesn ’t exist.
The Congressional Budget Office said it all when it noted that borrowing
$820 billion will cost taxpayers $347 billion more in interest totalling this
stimulus plan to more than $1 trillion.And here I am bitching about my
balances on my own debt.
But fear not folks!I recently read where physicists have reexamined the
math surrounding their attempt at simulating a black hole at the Large
Hadron Collider in Switzerland.That ’s that huge 17 mile-wide particle
accelerator that hurls beams of protons and ions at velocities approaching
the speed of light then colliding them with each other,collecting the data in
the hopes it tells them how the universe began.This current project hopes
to simulate the “big bang theory ”.But wait!Seems these guys aren ’t totally
convinced that this sucker,once engaged,wouldn ’t create a black hole
with a tiny-teensy possibility of gobbling up every single spec of matter
and growing larger instead of decaying altogether.Others think that ’s not
possible.But then again,folks thought it wasn ’t possible for the earth to be
round instead of flat,rocks fell from the sky,computers would fit in the palm
of your hand,continents drift and men would understand women!!Who ’da
thought right?(Wait,maybe that last example wasn ’t all that accurate ….
hell,we might have a chance afterall!)Anyway,if it does create a black
hole,I hope I ’m riding my scoot cause that oughta be one helluva ride to
Switzerland from Bourg,LA!
Besides,who ’s gonna be
there to collect all that debt
our government created?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Another year has come and gone and it ’s safe to say,there ’s quite a
bit to be thankful for now that 2008 is over.I believe it safe to say that
each one of us has taken a moment to reflect on this past year and while
“resolutions ” may not be the priorities as it used to be,,I ’m sure we ’ve all
learned a thing or two that will be deciding factors going into 2009.
Probably to most prominent for Louisiana was a dejavu experience called
Gustave and Ike.Almost identical in cause and effect as Katrina and Rita,
just a few degrees to the left and a bit closer to the coastline brought back
many unfortunate memories.Not to mention a scare that reminded us the
importance of awareness regarding our vanishing coastlines.Hopefully,
our representatives will continue to hound Washington of our plight and
we can see some effective results from their efforts and concern for a
viable state.
Politics brought historical significance in both Louisiana and the nation.
Bobby Jindal was the first non-white elected to the Governor ’s office,
while Barack Obama as our nation ’s first black President.Even Sarah
Palin was a first as the Republican candidate for Vice President Oh,and
I can ’t forget to mention William Jefferson didn ’t make it in his runoff.Of
course more seedy politicians were exposed for various infidelities and
corruption.Not historical,but simply another reminder of the importance
of learning more about candidates for office.We also learned that
President Bush has some pretty quick moves when it comes to sailing
size 10 loafers.
Fuel prices skyrocketed thanks to speculators and $147 per barrel oil
prices.And here we are 5 months later and prices are at a virtual all-time
low in many,many years.Gotta wonder what ’s on the horizon regarding
the oil and gas industry.Especially those of us who make our living there.
And speaking of losing money,’08 certainly left its mark as the year of
the bailouts.Plummeting stock market,$700 billion in bailouts (with no
oversights whatsoever),as well as foreclosures.Another sad reminder of
the ineffectiveness of our current politicians.Hopefully,true “change ” is
on the horizon.
There were some farewells in the personality world too.Charlton Heston,
Cyd Charisse,Mel Ferrer,Paul Newman well-known as Hollywood
greats.Two other actors,Heath Ledger and child actor Brad Renfro were
defeated by drugs.In the comedian world we saw Dick Martin,Harvey
Korman,Paul Sills,Estelle Getty,Bernie Mac and George Karlin leave us
for the great comedy show in the sky.The music world lost Sean Levert,
Levi Stubbs,Bo Diddley and Issac Hayes,while the automotive sport
world lost Hot Rod King,Boyd Coddington.
We all had our goods and bads,losses and gains,mistakes and triumphs.
For me,the highlight of 2008 was the creation of extended family as I
married my love and best friend Brenda.We also prepare to celebrate our
5th year of publication in just two more months.We have quite a lot to be
thankful for and we can honestly say,you our readers and our supporting
customers are appreciated more than you can imagine.Thank you and a
Happy New Year to all of you!

PREPARING FOR A NEW YEAR
Within each of our lives around this time of the year,we are filled with
emotion and anticipation with the upcoming holiday and New Year that
follows.Whether its family,work,finances or any of the multitude of
circumstances that may be on one ’s mind,always remember in your heart
that faith can see you through it and there are always those that are close
by that can lift you through any troubling times that occur.
The closing of 2008 brings ahead new challenges and uncertainties
for all of America.With the crumbling economy,bailouts,and violence
spreading throughout the world,Americans are drawing closer to a new
way of thinking that demands self-preservation.For too long,we ’ve
been complacent to the events surrounding our lives that can jeopardize
our futures and possibly our freedoms.The way we go about our daily
routines in the past is almost at the point that requires a new evaluation of
how we think.And that way of thinking includes survival.But don ’t get me
wrong when I use the term “survival ”.I don ’t believe the survival to be to
the extreme.But I do however believe it to be the mantra that determines
our everyday decisions and choices.
In most of our daily routines,we ’ve relied so much on systematic
occurrences that are consistent with everyday life experiences.And
these all the while,have either grave consequences or a slow build-up
to something either rewarding or detrimental.Controlling one ’s future is
where this all comes to play.This is the survival I speak of.
In year ’s past,our leaders have made promises and projections regarding
America ’s future but in recent past,these leaders fail to remind us that
“we ” ((you and I)are an integral part of our country and our own futures.
No one really likes to be reminded of our responsibilities to self,family
and country.But the occasional wake up call doesn ’t hurt at all and in
most cases,comes right when it ’s needed or worse case,after it ’s too
late.And these can mostly be summed up to the complacency I speak of.
I don ’t know about you but simple reminders of this comes during this
time of year when we are reminded that a holiday celebration,known
as Christmas (which follows Thanksgiving)no longer expresses openly
the celebrations of thanks to God or the birth of Jesus Christ because
it offends a handful of locals or the distinction of separation of church
and state becomes the offense (or rather used as the offense).Stories
such as Thibodauxville and recently in Ponchatoula with the prevention
of the lighted cross by the locomotive in downtown Ponchatoula have
been threatened lawsuits by the ACLU.You know,there was a time when
snake-oil salesmen come in to a town and their offenses got them tarred
and feathered by the locals simply because they didn ’t want their kind
around.As far as I ’m concerned,the ACLU falls into that same description
and the only way this can change is if the true majority (still defined as the
larger quantity of denominators)speaks out and tells them to get the hell
out.Sadly,this won ’t happen because communities don ’t have the funds
to legally fight them,and morally,most locals have better things to do
than fight for their communities en masse.Amazing how one person can
shut down the majority?
When will this end?Or
rather,when will YOU

ARE YOU “JOE THE PLUMBER ”?
As if,I have to ask this question!Of course you are;we all are!We are
a mix of blue &white collar workers who bust our asses for what we ’ve
got and what we want and the last thing we need is for government to get
in our way.The scary part about all this is that that statement has more
intense meaning than most realize.
I don ’t know about you but I ’m fed-up with two major entities in this
country;Condescending Politicians and the Major Media!That ’s right.
When they interact with Americans,their condescension towards us
is outright pathetic and pure disrespect for the people they serve.
Politician ’s love us come election time,then after in office,forget the very
people who got them there.The media on the other hand,has forgotten
the golden rule of journalism.“Reporting the truth ”.While you may claim
to do it,instead you consent to promoting fat lies or kicking people
out of your way to pick a side that may further your personal agendas.
Commentary and news reporting no longer realizes distinction.And the
resulting probable consequences matter no more.The lies are there folks.
Facts are proven but mainstream media doesn ’t want you to have access
to it.They revel in the old double-standard.Hell,they ’re writing the book
on it as we speak,with these liberal politicians contributing in every way
possible.
Joe the Plumber,regardless of his place in life is no different than you
and me.Joe is we and we are Joe.That ’s the reality.All Joe did was
have the audacity to commit the mortalist of sins;ask a popular Harvard-
trained candidate a question that made him look bad.In turn,Joe ’s life,
reputation,career and family life was punished to the extreme by the
very media that claims seek the truth on behalf of the public and jumping
on this shit wagon were the condescending politicians who claim to
represent and look out for the “Joe the plumbers ” of America..So,why did
they do this?You ’re smart enough to figure it out.
Congress is experiencing its lowest approval rating in history at 12%.
And with numbers like that,it shouldn ’t surprise anyone that basically,
Americans want to fire the entire Congress.So,will you???You know you
can,it ’s called “VOTING ”.One of the remaining few bastions of Freedom
left in this country.So,if you think this sucks now,wait till there ’s a 60-
seat Democrat majority in the Senate.What follows will be no filibusters
much less policy changes right on down to Supreme Court Judges.Who
by the way,are there to uphold the Constitution of the United States,not
supporting any agendas,be it left or right,conservative or liberal!
Think about this readers:Do not for one minute think that what happened
to Joe the Plumber couldn ’t happen to you.The audacity to question
government or expose the lies that misrepresent Americans is punishable
by character assassination and humiliation.It ’s no wonder that competent
Americans puke at the thought of running for office when they have
the talents and abilities to represent the people with honor,respect
and responsibility.All it takes is a willingness to buck the status quo,a
skeleton in their closet,or a blemish on any record and you ’ll have the
media and the liberal politicians on them like flies on shit!And those who
encourage these tactics are destined to experience it themselves.In
the words of Albert Einstein:“Two things are infinite:The Universe and
Human Stupidity;And
I ’m not sure about the
Universe ”.

RUINING TWO PERFECTLY GOOD
HURRICANES
It comes as no surprise that while Louisianans were struggling with post
Gustav effects,the attention turned to TX and Ike resulting in an all-
forgotten devastation that affected coastal parishes as well as central
parishes.And while Terrebonne Parish became the targeted Gustav landfall
location,media reporting made note of the target with happenstance while
turning their hungry attention to New Orleans and the ability of the levees
to withstand the effects of Gustav ’s rage.It also sniffed of the suspicions
of what might happen to those once again not heading evacuation orders
along with the aftermath that might exist.
But,New Orleans wasn ’t the only headlines this time;so was Baton Rouge.
We know,cause BR was our evacuation destination.Philosophy for me
was escaping the possible flooding predicted while being close enough to
home to once again get work up and running again.And this is where the
frustrations began.
First,we ’d like to thank from the bottom of our hearts,Mary and Brett along
with my 88 year old “Papa ”for extending their generosity as safe haven
for our evacuation from home.So we saw first-hand the devastation and
traffic turmoil ’s resulting from Gustav ’s selected path.These frustrations
felt in BR were compounded by the inability to obtain information about
our home town/parish.NO communication or reports of substantial quality
were coming to displaced residents outside of our respective parishes,
mainly Terrebonne.Seems our recently (highly-endorsed)elected
Parish President Michel Claudet didn ’t have the balls to hang with the
responsibilities that come with his elected position during hurricanes,so he
“dumped ”his responsibilities on the Sheriff instead.Thanks and kudos to
Sheriff Vernon Bourgeois for stepping up for the additional responsibilities
(like you didn ’t have enough to deal with already!).
Then Ike comes along,and media attention distances itself further from LA
on to TX.But no one recognized the devastation that crept into the parishes
along the gulf-coast in the form of tidal surges.So adding insult to injury;
Ike ’s floods would break Hurricane Rita ’s record for water damages.Oh,
did I forget to mention our Claudet-appointed Emergency-Preparedness
Director (Jerry Richard)chose to sit at Tiger Stadium to watch LSU kick-ass,
all while Terrebonne Parish became the Gulf of Mexico ’s newly acquired
real estate?Just another day at the office,eh Jerry?And all Claudet and
his flunky could say was no one could ’ve predicted the consequences of
these hurricanes.Can you say:Completely out of touch with reality???
Regardless of all the governmental drama,lack of communication,FEMA ’s
new script;“Sorry,your assistance request has been denied ”,virtual
non-existent levee system,and unexpected “inflated hurricane insurance
deductibles ”,residents of the coastal parishes show resiliency once again
for facing the natural and bureaucratic obstacles placed on their lives.This
is what makes us great in the eyes of the nation,despite what others may
think.Governor Jindal,Thanks for showing LA why you should ’ve been
elected a long time ago.To the pussy ’s that showed their true colors during
a disaster,may I suggest the following philosophy:“If you can ’t run with the
big-dogs,keep your puppy-ass on the porch where you belong ”.Thanks to
all of those who stepped up and put the citizens of our parish first!!!

AMERICA,The Greatest Country in the World!!!
I don ’t know about you,but I ’ve had it with the “blame America ” mentality
that is running rampant with certain American citizens and even worse,
politicians.America was founded on the basic principals that its citizens
have a right to life,liberty and the pursuit of happiness.Not “government
funded ”!!!Just the ability to pursue it.Meaning;the rest is up to you.
Government is supposed to insure it because its foundation is a
government “of,by and for the people ”.It doesn ’t get any plainer than that
folks.
So,here I am in today ’s age,having to constantly here that America ’s ills,
are America ’s doing.That is pure Bullshit!And what ’s scary about this is
we have a rampant mentality in today ’s government officials that feel we
have to be careful how we approach evil,how we talk about or to evil,
how we attack evil …cause the evil people will only get angrier at us and
want to be even more evil to us.Hell,evil may even pick on our friends
in other countries out of spite and that ’ll make our other friends get mad
at us.And that is our fault,not evil ’s fault.(Excuse me while I puke!!)
These thoughts and feelings are in leadership positions in our nation ’s
government.These morons actually are not proud of our nations heritage,
nor or they proud of our accomplishments.And they don ’t care what true
Americans in their country think either.Scary part about this is that they
get re-elected.Parents teach their kids about complacency every day and
don ’t realize it.But the scary ones are the adults who don ’t recognize it in
themselves come election time.This is sad.
While this country has experienced many “failures ”,(one of which is
slavery),our accomplishments far outweigh the weaknesses.America
defeated slavery on its own soil.That is in and of itself,a great victory.
And we ’ve also defeated mass murderers in the Third Reich,Imperial
Japan,Soviet Union and thousands of other places and countries.
Regardless of what some Americans think,the U.S.of A.is the greatest
moral force in the world.And this country has done more to rid the world
of evil than any other country in the history of the world.And we should
all be proud of our accomplishments.America is not finished yet.But
the fundamental principals of what we stand for and what this country
offers its citizens is far beyond the realm of realization in any other
country in the world.So,that much tells me that in order to maintain the
integrity of our country,these basic fundamentals need to be maintained
and protected from those who oppose these principals and insist on a
“change ”.Because their vision and philosophy of “Blame America First ”
can bring this country down faster that any of us can realize.
I live in the greatest country in the world.And I am proud of both our
accomplishments and our failures.Accomplishments exemplify to the
rest of the world that we stand united.Our failures help us mature to the
next level of success.America is the land where we have access to “life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness ”.And as a citizen of this great nation,
you should always be prepared to support those who protect these
freedoms,and yourself

it at all costs.Never

REACHING FURTHER THAN EXPECTED
Over the past 4+years,we ’ve seen the magazine reach virtually the
entire state and outside our state lines.It ’s pretty cool getting emails from
folks in other states letting us know they ’ve checked us out and like what
they see.We ’ve even met some of these great folks face-to-face and I ’m
sure over time,we ’ll be meeting many more.You contribute to our fuel,
thanks.
The emails from within LA are most certainly appreciated as well.And it ’s
always great meeting you at rallies and events we ’re able to make.Your
kind words and support is the engine that keeps us riding.Thank You!
But I must admit that I ’ve not recognized a forgotten group of loyal
readers that for me,I can ’t take for granted.And that ’s the brothers and
sisters serving time.We hear from more bikers incarcerated than one
could realize.We have a loyal readership out there that look forward
to the mag each month and I can tell you,many have shared with us
their experiences of riding prior to serving time as well as their dreams
and aspirations of riding again when their time is done.And their letters
can open one ’s eyes to realizing our most precious right,and that ’s
to live in freedom!You would be amazed at the efforts through work
programs within the system that is utilized to reach that goal of obtaining
a subscription.And we ’re talking straight up earned pay at pennies on the
dollar or through the efforts of friend or family.
But it ’s certainly rewarding to know that through our magazine,they ’re
able to see and read about familiar places,familiar faces and all those
things that keep ’s their knees in the breeze.So,to those of you this
message reaches on the inside,we want you to know how much we
realize this opportunity to share with you those things you miss regarding
our shared passion is a privilege we at Thunder Roads don ’t want to
undervalue.And recognizing the significance of what it means to patiently
wait for that next issue inspires us to do our best to put a personalization
to each article we publish while at the same time providing you something
to look forward to.I have no way of knowing or understanding what you
feel.But I know it can ’t be all that great.But a newer awareness will be
present in each future issue.I promise to do my very best to reply to your

As of this publication,the latest news in-between the candidates ’ foreplay
and the money shot that ’ll be heard around the world in November,the
price of fuel in America is taking an interesting turn.Seems talking about
exploring more for oil and gas in areas not accessed (thanks to our
esteemed career politicians)is affecting the price of a barrel of oil after
all despite the nay-sayers.Now while I realize the reduction in costs are
minor,that could change by the time you ’re reading this and we may find
ourselves closer to moving forward to more drilling anyway.And I think
I can honestly say that a majority of us here in LA know full well,drilling
is not the answer,but it WILL be a major step forward of gaining our
independence from spending billions with those who would pray for our
destruction.And if we stay on this same path,refuse to buckle down and
get realistic,we stand the chance of suffering tougher times ahead.Be
informed,pay attention
and recognize the
power of knowledge and
common sense.Then
put it to good use at the
polls.

Let’s Get Realistic!
I know there are a large percentage of our readers who much like myself are employed in the oilfield. And while we may not know all the particulars regarding fuel prices (other than they suck), the speculators driving up the price of oil on paper, and the environmental concerns of the do-nothings in Congress on our payroll, what we do know is the oilfield of today, is definitely not the oilfield of 25 years ago.
Environmentalists believe opening up drilling off the coasts of Florida and California will have a detrimental effect on the environment and shouldn’t be allowed. I digress! As most of you already know, the oil & gas industry has felt the demands of environmental requirements and over 25 years ago, started a complete 180º turn when it comes to quality and environmental issues. Oil & Gas producers as well as the service companies who vie for their business has generated a new age of safety, quality and efficiency compared to the 80’s when the bottom fell out. The personnel you employ in today’s market find themselves in positions of great demand for our dedication to these three tenants. And it’s because of these requirements along with experienced and loyal employees that the oilfield of today is both quality and safety minded.
Post Katrina results in the Gulf of Mexico showed there was considerable damage to the producing rigs with no environmental disasters. Many of us viewed countless emails containing photos of rigs severely damaged including some that just disappeared. Some of you have actually had to survey these structures so you know first-hand. Even the Discovery Channel hosted programs that dealt with the salvage of some of these structures directly related to Katrina’s destruction. It must be recognized that the entire oilfield industry, consisting of drilling, rental, producing, transportation and supplemental companies as well as their employees are the very reason there were no deaths nor environmental disasters during this hurricane much less on any average given day.
The American Petroleum Institute has openly admitted that amongst all the rhetoric coming out of Washington, that to open drilling off these two coasts as well as ANWAR will not fix today’s current gas prices. However, they do acknowledge that working with existing leases near existing pipelines as well as new discoveries would help our country’s need for fuel well into the future. And that is what this is truly all about and should’ve been done 10 years ago (Thanks Slick Willy!). Our need for fossil fuels will exist for a long time. The entrepreneural spirit of today’s American will find new and exciting alternatives for fuel but the fossil fuel demand will still be very necessary. America doesn’t need to send dollars to countries that don’t like us much less funding their dictatorships either. But American’s need to recognize that while alternative fuel options need to considered, it’s not up to the government to invent it. Again, it’s the entrepreneural spirit of “we the people”, and not Uncle Sam.
As it stands now, our elected officials have come to a crossroad in their careers. They are feeling the tension, they are hearing the whispers and they can see the look in our eyes. We are becoming very vocal about our disgust for their lack of proficiency. Their free rides are about the run out of gas. This gas price issue has all the potential of becoming a national emergency, and threatens our own security. It’s time to get realistic about this and open the drilling for oil and gas off the coasts of FL and CA as well as ANWAR. Our politicians have no earthly idea how to fix the problem. All they’ve done over the past several years is perfected the blame game. Problem is NO ONE wins that competition but you and me. Unless we do something about it. It’s up to us!

Veteran’s Deserve Better!
It’s easy for us to sit at home chillin on the couch watching TV, movies or the news oblivious to the state of affairs within our country and those abroad. The banter plays rampant within the Democrapic Party while mum’s the word on the Repugnatcan Party. While the polls show Bush’s disapproval rating is at an all-time high, less focus seems to be the order of the day when it comes to recognizing Congress’ approval rating is at an all-time low. Democraps run the show in Washington but act like grade schoolers gone wild! Are these guys the same guys that want their, sorry OUR President elect to be a Democrap? One shudders at the thought.
But, I’ll give it to one Democratic Senator. And that’s Sen. Jim Webb of VA. He’s sponsoring a bill that would improve GI Bill college benefits so that many of our troops returning from combat might receive the same level of support their grandfathers received after WWII.
There are those who feel we can’t afford to be too generous. If we improve an education benefit for them, too many would opt for a life on college campuses instead of reenlisting or multiple tours. A study cites that 16% would decide to leave the military after their initial tour of duty. But what they fail to acknowledge is that in the same study, approximately 16% additional enlistments could be expected as well. Our military is all-volunteer and despite what we read in the papers and the extreme pressures of multiple deployments, our combat soldiers’ morale remains high. This loyalty is worthy of a country returning that appreciation through rewarding them in this manner for their sacrifices. With all other positive considerations in mind, improving the GI Bill to today’s standards can’t be of any great threat to our current enlistment statistics.
What really hurts about this attitude is that it’s one that’s shared by one of the Presidential candidates. John McCain is the last guy I’d figure would not be interested in improving this bill. Technically, his veteran status is no different than today’s US soldier. How can he or the majority of our congressmen not support this bill while posing for photo-ops with our soldiers and beginning and ending speeches with “Support the Troops”?
This needs to be an issue addressed by the presidential candidates and their support for or against this bill should be explained without spin. As a public servant of this capacity, they owe it to us to get out of this mindless zone of zombies and wake up to the oath they took. And if this is something we as American Citizens support, we should sound off, every one of us and demand they follow through with the will of “We the People”.
This is a topic that falls in line with this suddenly new word spit out called “change”. If these candidates are truly committed to change, then they need to live it rather than brag on it. Our troops are fighting a war started on their watch. They need to see it through by doing the right thing for the American Soldier instead of pursuing their own interests and we need to encourage them diligently while we enjoy our freedoms back home. Never forget that our Military is watching our backs and keeping the torch of freedom burning brightly for us all. This is one courageous way to show our gratitude in return.

May is Motorcycle Safety & Awareness Month
Once again, the motorcycle community is recognized as focal subjects for 31 days as a few generous media outlets assist the Louisiana Motorcyclists Safety & Awareness Committee, MAC and ABATE of LA along with other active organizations and individuals spread the word about motorcycle awareness in the state of LA during the month of May. It is also recognized nationwide as well. While these efforts are applaudable, it should never be over come June 1st and beyond. Motorcycle safety and awareness is a “24/7-365 state-of-mind”. And it’s up to every one of us to maintain that mindset of safety and the sharing of awareness. Please do your part on behalf of yourself and your fellow riders to practice both with generosity and integrity.
We all know that soon, there will be a vote cast that will determine whether bikers will have the freedom of choice or not. And it goes without saying, there will be many that will argue that the use of the word “freedom” is a weak excuse at best when it comes to adults choosing to wear a helmet or not. I personally am an advocate for “choice”. We’re all old enough to make a decision and riding in and of itself has its risks that we’re all very much aware of. If you choose to ride lidless, remember the risks associated with it. But also remember too, while a majority of crashes associated with motorcycles involve a vehicle violating the rider’s right-of-way, LA particularly suffers a tremendous percentage of loss-of-life due to alchohol abuse. Please look out for your friends and fellow riders and take the keys if they drink too much. All of LA’s biker friendly bars are more than willing to secure their scoot till they can come back sober to ride her home. Escorted rides to graveyards are too emotional to endure the loss of a friend.
But let’s go back to that term “freedom” that the skeptics love to blast as our bullshit excuse for riding lidless. Government has never, ever been experts in taking it upon itself to make choices for adults. This “save them from theirselves” mentality needs to be redirected back to the policy-makers themselves. America’s citizens need to collectively step up to the plate to serve notice that America’s government was established to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people. There are too many attempts to control our personal lives and when it comes to freedom of choice being controlled, it’s always a matter of time when another freedom is taken away. Folks, this is not something to be taken lightly. Our FREEDOM can be jeopordized quicker than you think, and in many, many more ways than one.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
Over the past couple months, we’ve been asked the same question over and over again regarding a new event that’s scheduled to take place October 17-19, 2008. The New Orleans Bikefest Motorcycle Rally & Music Festival, making its debut at Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego, LA, is presenting bikers, sponsors and vendors alike one specific question they all want an answer to. And the question is; “Is the New Orleans Bikefest or its promoters affiliated with Steel Pony Express or Scooter Promotions in any way, shape or form?” The answer to this question is a resounding “NO!!!” This event is being produced by Live Free Promotions, LLC which is owned and operated by area locals, Barry Lee and Kay Miller.
Both Barry & Kay have had their share of the same questions which led to their addressing it as the first question on their FAQ page of their website; www.neworleansbikefest.com. As riders themselves, they’ve traveled to many various major rallies throughout the country and felt the urge to bring an event to New Orleans on behalf of LA’s biker community. We all know living in a post Katrina world put a damper on a major biker event so between existing events and this one, something has to give. And this event has all the possibilities of bringing something major back to the New Orleans area. And despite the on-going recovery efforts, New Orleans still offers a much-loved desire for bikers from all over the country to come down and visit “Party Central, USA”.
Barry & Kay weren’t prepared for the line of questioning coming from vendors and riders alike. The main concerns of course came from potential vendors and sponsors as well as advertising avenues; those who would be “investing” an interest through participation or services. And if you’re a vendor, sponsor or advertising business reading this with your own personal encounters with the “subjects in question”, you know full well what we’re talking about. And no one wants to get burned again.
So we spent some time with Barry and Kay speaking extensively about this situation and have come to learn that they are genuine and sincere about kicking off a biker event that will be enjoyable for LA’s Biker Community and with the best intentions for it to become profitable for all of the businesses setting up at the rally site, as well as the sponsoring businesses who support it. This is a bold venture on their part and they’ve learned that “Trust” is just as much an equal investment as the dollars being spent to promote and support it. It has always been said in the community that whoever steps up to the plate to kick-off another biker rally in the New Orleans area will have their hands full obtaining the trust of those whose investments were lost at a failed attempt to keep an existing rally alive. I personally, am willing to trust in the efforts and character of Barry Lee and Kay Miller to get something great off the ground once again in the New Orleans area. Please join me in supporting this event as you have others in past through our recommendations. They certainly deserve a chance to earn your confidence.

Another Biker Family Needs Your Help!
Deaths in the Motorcycle Community are hard to bear. Losing a member of our family is devastating and because of our lifestyle, reluctantly acceptable. Murder in the Motorcycle Community however, is TOTALLY unacceptable. Don’t get me wrong, murder is inexcusable in any community. But in ours where the stakes are already high, this cannot be an acceptable factor.
Archie Solet, a native of Houma and a resident of Dulac, LA died at approximately 1pm at St. Roch Ave. and North Robertson St in New Orleans by a bullet from a gun held by some punk-assed gangsta wanna-be. Archie is survived by his wife Brandy, three sons; Chase, Dillon and Evan along with family and countless friends.
Archie was doing nothing out of the ordinary. A biker like you and I in a scenario such as this, Archie decided to take a ride on his scoot while Brandy and his kids went out shopping. With a beautiful day of riding ahead, Archie headed out to the French Quarter. Apparently, while traveling around the area, Archie wound up at one of the busiest intersections in the 8th Ward. And at 1pm, Archie became another statistic expemplifying New Orleans’ infamous and escalating violence and murder; Dead of multiple gunshot wonds. At present, police have no motives much less suspects. The family was told detectives have located a witness but albeit unwilling to testify out of terror of retrobution. But Archie’s murder was not the lone killing that day. Two other men were shot to death just hours in unrelated killings before Archie was murdered.
In a recent article in the Times Picayune, Criminologist Peter Scharf said “the statistics show the city’s crime has gotten worse and remains impervious to the recently stepped-up law enforcement efforts” with the additional mention that “there are consistently 15-19 or so people dying each month for the last 2 years.”
This is not surprising to any of us who live around the NO area or even watch the news broadcasts. Traveling to the city on our bikes is supposed to be something to enjoy. What is becoming an additional fact to consider is while riding there, watch out for the lunatics behind the wheel and the lousy road conditions, armed robbers enters into the equasion. This is “F’d” up to say the least. Maybe, these young punk bitches will wind up becoming a statistic themselves. Their career choice almost guarantees it. Will they be that lucky? Time & justice will see.
March 16th will be the day for the Archie Solet Benefit Run. Monies raise will go towards reward with Crime Stoppers of NO and to help support his surviving family. Please review the info in this month’s calendar of events. And PLEASE make every effort to support this event. I’ll be looking for you there. Please keep Archie and his family in your prayers.

A Call to Arms For a Brother in Need!
If I were to mention a name, Jay Allen, a large majority of you here in LA wouldn’t know who I was talking about. Now, if I mentioned the Broken Spoke Saloon in Sturgis, then I believe I’d have named something very familiar then. For those of you who’ve visited Sturgis, this name is well known and you probably slugged a few cold ones at the Spoke. Those of you, like me who hasn’t been yet may have at least heard of the Broken Spoke Saloon. And Jay is the proprietor.
There’s a very important story breaking out in Meade County, SD that has a profound effect on one specific person (Jay) and a much bigger and broader effect on all of us as bikers. And this is a call on you for your help.
Back in December, the commissioners of Meade County held a review session of Jay and the Broke Spoke Saloon and Sturgis County Line Campground. In short, Jay was denied the renewal of his liquor license by said commissioners. In the 15 years since Jay took ownership, he has gone without one single liquor infraction in SD. The reason stated by the commissioners for their denial was Jay’s “questionable moral character”, allegedly stemming from a dispute with two local contractors involved in his Sturgis County line project.
Jay’s investments in this project has been in the millions in less than 2 years and actually reduced his construction debt from $1.4 million to under $90k. The only contention is with the 2 local contractors who appeared before the commission requesting their denial for Jay’s liquor license although the matters are in question. Jay supplied the commission with all the documentation regarding the two in contention and the disputed claims. It also included a request from Jay’s attorney requesting proof of expenditures for an exorbitant invoice by these contractors. Of the five total members of the commission, one is known to be good friends and close neighbors with one of the contractors in dispute. The commissioners sided with the contractors despite the lack of evidence in their favor and failed to explain how Jay Allen lacked moral character.
When asked by one commissioner, Mr. Wink, what Jay (calling Jay an outsider) has done for Meade County, they didn’t consider the following facts about Jay; He has not missed a rally in Sturgis since 1986, Jay employs up to 100 locals at the annual rally and committed millions of dollars to the county with both of his businesses, he’s help raise tens of thousands of dollars for Kids and Chrome charity and SD Make-A-Wish as well as the Foothills Assisted Living rest home, he’s paid for the lights at the Fort Meade ballpark and received multiple awards for his generosity towards Veterans through Broken Spoke over the years. In the end, the commission wouldn’t budge.
So, friends and those working hard to help Jay is requesting help from the entire biker community of America... Although this is not a LA related situation, Sturgis is the mother of all biker rallies with a history second to none. Happy New Year Louisiana!
2008 has arrived leaving 2007 pretty much a blur! A lot of stuff took place in ’07 both good and bad and we can only hope 2008 brings prosperity and peace to everyone we know and love. Here’s wishing everybody a happy and prosperous New Year.
There are a lot of things slated for ’08 but the one that tops the list is the Presidential elections. Caucuses are the top news events of the day and results from these pretty much determine who has the stamina and money to follow through till Election Day. I never really understood the importance of 2 simple states making the determination of who may or may not be our next leader but such is the way of politics here in America. The most important fact remains; everyone who is eligible to vote NEEDS TO VOTE. If you’re not registered, then do so! It’s very sad that there are many in this free country who feels their vote doesn’t count. It does count. More than you can imagine. We Americans need to get between this fighting partisanship and remind the politicians that they work for us and its OUR VOICE they must represent.
Additionally, there are politicians out there who feel the right to vote should be available to non-residents of this country. This is coming in the form of not having to show identification when you hit the voter’s booth. Virtually all of us have to show a legitimate form of ID to access your bank account, credit, driver’s license, writing checks, etc. but casting a vote for a leader of your local community, state or country is not necessary. The results of this possibility could have tremendous consequences for us all if we don’t pay attention to this. It’s bad enough many legitimate Americans don’t go to the polls to cast a vote. If you’re one of them, you and those of us who do may have our votes overwhelmed by residents who are not in this country legally. The fact that this is NOT COOL is an understatement to say the least. Its one thing that there are non-residents obtaining drivers licenses through false means. Now they get to pick our leaders too! Doesn’t anyone see the implications this could create? This can’t happen folks. It just can’t! Get involved, get interested and be very aware of any efforts some of these desperate politicians will go through to make this happen.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
Well everyone, another year has come and it’s almost gone. But before we can look into 2008, we want to wish our readers, customers, supporters and our Troops and their families a very Merry Christmas. For those of us here at home preparing for our Christmas dinners, please take a moment to remember our troops. Be it through prayer, a moment of silence, or just a quiet moment to yourself; please consider them and their sacrifices. But of course, consider your loved ones as well.
This issue, you will see an article published by Michael Yon. I mentioned him a few issues back. He’s the journalist embedded with our troops and the British troops as well, reporting on the “true” realities in Iraq. We are honored to have the opportunity to bring you close to the facts about the efforts being made there. We hope to be allowed to publish other dispatches from Michael. We will be having a link from our site to his very soon.
I will be looking into a project for 2008. And I would like your participation. I want you to take a moment at some point and think as if you were a mentor to a child that simply loves motorcycles. Now, most of you are parents already and that should be a no-brainer. But think about it from a point of view where you are speaking to this young child of a manner in which you are teaching him an important aspect of life as applied to your bike. Think about it for a while and I believe you can envision what I mean. It can be related to riding, wrenching, participating, organizing, hanging with friends, etc. Anything you do involving your scoot and how owning, servicing, enjoying or experiencing motorcycling in some way teaches valuable lessons in life to a child. When you think about it, awareness is what saves lives. Kids learn plenty in their young age. And their innocence and a willingness to learn is a value that holds no bounds. If you had the opportunity to teach every child, that one particular bit of advice or lesson, they can learn about motorcycle awareness as well as how owning a motorcycle requires responsibility, awareness, safety, skill and respect; all the lessons of life that can be applied everywhere else in their world. You’re going to see more national articles of events and interests this coming year. Some you’ve seen start to come in the last couple months. The Thunder Roads Magazine family is growing and coverage of events through the TRM name and we’re becoming more and more “aware of” on the national scenes. When Will They Ever Learn?
I’m always interested in seeing what the Democrats have to say when it comes to their plan to make our country a better place. I’m still waiting……Seems all the Dem leadership is ever interested in is slamming someone from the general public instead of focusing on the lame promises they made that got these morons elected in the first place.
Case in point; Rush Limbaugh. Seems Senator Harry Reid had a problem with a statement Rush made regarding “phony soldiers”. He went into his little infantile rant on how Rush doesn’t respect the troops, blah, blah! And as is typical of the agenda driven Democrapic Congressional leadership, a “pick and choose” approach to the transcripts of Rush’s show used only what they could with the hopes to silence yet another person who lays it on the line. This garnered so much media attention. And of course the far-left media’s jumped right on board for some more juicy gossip, all of course with “America’s best interest at heart”. Yea right!
The reality of it all is simply put. Rush did use the term but if one heard or read the entire transcript, anyone could realize the context of the comment was referenced to a young man named Beauchamp (and others like him), who after much investigation was found to not have even served in Iraq, much less saw what he documented as being seen. He did enough damage to the rest of the troops’ reputation as well as the commanding officers. And the far-left media and Democrapic leadership jumped right on his reports as valid without even taking the time to validate any of his claims. But that’s another story and you may be surprised to know, Beauchamp was given a chance to serve and is currently in Iraq, for real! I would tend to believe that this young soldier has learned his lesson so we must learn to forgive and allow him to remain focused as he fights for our country and the freedom of the Iraqi people.
The whacky thing about all of this is Rush turned around and took Sen. Reid’s slam letter and put it up for auction on Ebay. Come the end of the auction, the letter sold to the highest bidder for a record-breaking 2.1 million dollars!!! And, Rush will match the amount and the 4.2mil will be donated to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation. Old Dirty Harry was almost speachless (yea, right). He did do the old “flipity-flop” while addressing Congress and proceeded to virtually take credit for the massive amount of money donated to the MCLEF, in true Democrapic form. Yes, that’s right. He and his 40 or so Democrapic puppets made this all happen. At press time, none of them have yet to donate from their own pockets.
Seems that the tide is turning on these particular Dems in that the news coming out of Iraq has been “good news” and the violence is lessening while the people of Iraq turn to our brave soldiers for assistance, guidance and support. Even ole’ bin Laden appologized for Al’ Quaida’s inability to lead Iraq into Utopia. You Democrats out there who insist on losing a winnable war take notice: Next time you’re out there campaigning for our vote, your words are likely to “really require a willing suspension of disbelief.” I hear WalMart is always hiring.

The Admirable Biker Mentality
Throughout the years of my riding and associating myself with bikers from all walks of life, I have watched with ever-growing amazement the one prevailing mentality that each one of us holds to others; generosity. It really doesn’t matter what the situation may be, bikers seem to always have this gift for support when the need arises. And it usually has no boundaries. I see it, you see it, and we all see it at varying degrees and levels. It’s abundant and more notably, contagious!
But what makes this generosity easy to deliver, is what one receives in return. When you get right down to it, the admiration for what one does through some show of support extends gratitude in return for that generosity that tells the recipient something very, very important to them. And that is the fact that you understand, you grasp their pain and you can comprehend their world for that very moment, when it’s at its most intense for them. That’s because we’re all alike in many ways and can relate to some degree. Despite the fact that once the benefit has ended, the bikers have left and everyone has returned home, the beneficiary of that event leaves with a memory that remains forever forged in their minds and their hearts. And that memory is what’s important to us. How they see us, how they remember us, how they relate to us in the future and how they convey this message to others. Your generosity towards others IS more important than you think.
I saw this recently with the Jonathan Wainright benefit. They were grateful to us for what we did with the mag. But in truth, all we did was relay the message. The biker community did the rest. They received support from all over LA and surrounding. One voice became twenty, then fifty, then two hundred an on and on. And riders showed up in droves. The letters of thanks came to us, but they were most certainly meant for those of you who supported it in some way!
The same holds true to simple tasks as well. A young friend of my oldest daughter recently lost her dad. He was a rider and she spent lots of time riding on the back of his bike enjoying the same things we all enjoy on two wheels. Their bond was an integral part of her life. I wanted to show our support so I remembered a photo I took of him a while back. Printed it up, framed it and along with a card, and a few copies of the mag with article he appeared in, made a visit to extend condolences to the family and present these to her. She couldn’t thank us enough. We spent more time with them than expected during their time of mourning, but when we left, we knew in our hearts that we did something very special. We expressed our support and however simple our gift seemed to be, it meant more to them than we could imagine. The good that we felt in our hearts as we left, was pure and genuine. There will be times in my life when this simple form of generosity will mean more to me than anything else. It will be then and only then will I truly appreciate it. Until that time, YOU, my fellow riders will continue to show me the value of your generous hearts, which in turn I will do my best to resonate. But please know, because you are who you are, I am forever grateful! Thank you!

Gaining Insight on an Unpopular War
In my getting “refined” years, I’ve become more and more interested in news and utilize the local news channels for my own community and surrounding while scanning the major networks for nation and world news. Yea, I’m a “Fox Fan” if it hasn’t become evident. I like it straight up and if I’m not sure or don’t trust it…I’ll usually do my own research to either validate or refute. I’d like to think that’s the best way to learn what is real compared to what isn’t. Sometimes you can find yourself wadding in a river full of garbage before you finally get to the shore of truth you’re seeking.
Sometimes, I get it early while other times, I get it late. One example of this is reading their “Dispatches From Iraq”. Since I’m very interested in this war on terrorism (oops, did I say a naughty word?) and one day checked out one of the dispatches. I learned about some incredible things from its author, Michael Yon. You see, Michael is a former Green Beret who’s served his time for our country in Iraq and has chosen on his own accord to follow the progress in Iraq, with our troops and the Iraqi Army long after the major network reporters have left the “action”. While others report on the fighting, wounding and deaths, Michael is there telling “the rest of the story”. This usually, is the part of the war that never gets broadcast or published.
We’re used to hearing about soldiers killed, convoys ambushed, civilians killed by coalition fire but you rarely hear about what or how all this came about. You never hear about the convoy regrouping and bringing much needed food to villages and townships. You rarely hear (if ever) about how the Iraqi people are beginning to trust American Soldiers and have learned that while they would very much like our soldiers to return home, they do appreciate and know they can count on these brave men and women to be there for them. You rarely ever hear about an American Commanding Officer coming to a batter town, cleared of terrorists and helping organize the community. These commanders are commonly known as “Mayors” to the Iraqi people and village leaders because of their skills in organizing all facets of life requirements in a community in order for it to function normally. These skills require the organization of hospitals, law enforcement, utilities, food, fuel, water, etc. Everything it takes to function a town. And our soldiers and their commanders are doing this every day. It’s unfortunate, not much of this is known. But guess what fans…”Progress” seems to be the “word of the day” with some of our politicians and government leaders. That’s odd; this all didn’t start just yesterday.

Politicians and Election Time
It really doesn’t take a rogue-scholar to know when election time is around the corner. The rhetoric pours like summer rain in South Louisiana. And we’ve seen a tremendous amount of it here lately and I’m not talking liquid sunshine. Nope, the usual and predictable “finger-pointing” is flying around in peoples faces; it’s just a matter of time before someone gets poked in the eye. And Americans are getting their fill of it too.
Months ago, Congress experienced a change with the election of new officials. Between the 2 main parties involved, this group of irresponsible “children” have since shown Americans how screwed up their policies continue to be. No one can agree on most things, and the promises made so they could get elected have yet to surface, and it seems there isn’t a “public servant” to be found anymore. Career politicians make me sick with their empty promises and mightier-than-thou attitude. And certain divisions of the media are right along side of these creeps too.
Polls can say one thing (representing the voice of the people) but either Mr. Congressman or some facet from the media is telling Americans that’s really not what we want. They figure the status-quo remains and all they have to do is spin the numbers or facts to their own personal opinions and presto, us illiterate Americans will be none the wiser. I don’t know about you guys and gals but a baseball bat against the TV screen has crossed my mind many a time. Unfortunately, these new plasmas cost an arm and a leg and replacing them every now and then isn’t really cost effective.
But I’m starting to see and hear some things that really make me smile. Americans are starting to pay attention and these career politicians better do the same. Recently, YouTube held the first ever candidates debate and one plus was reformatting the debate from the norm. And what came out from this and possibly more in the future is that Americans can openly speak out and demand more from these people who insist on participating in the running of our country. Americans are beginning to see through the bullshit that runs so rampant amongst these particular politicians. Enough with the acceptance of special interest monies. Listen to the PEOPLE and not your fellow career politician. Make up your mind and stick to it. All this “flip-flopping” of positions on issues is enough to give me hemorrhoids. Get out and L-I-S-T-E-N to A-L-L the things your constituents say. Not just the ones that parallel your agenda only. And stop your finger pointing and complaining about your fellow politicians and those from other parties. Wake up and smell the shit you’re shoveling. It doesn’t matter what party affiliation you belong to. You belong to US! Your loyalty is to one entity and that’s the American people. Those who voted you in office. And we want more results, solutions and support from you without the blame game. Remember back in the day when you were young and dumb and you would piss your mom off? What did she tell you? “I brought you into this world…..I’ll take your ass out!” You’d better start listening to mom again. Cause you’re pissing her off!

Introducing Rockin’ M Campground
Seven years ago, several friends got together and we hauled ass north to a little town called Angie, LA. There we were met with steady showers and a small group of folks checking out a first-time event call the “Labor Day Biker Party”. Seems Lee & Mary McKenzie along with friends Brad & Norma Harris had this vision of putting on an old-fashioned style event that involved bikers and a party. Seemingly not that unique of a concept, their idea matured considerably more than expected. While that year, the rain hampered what could’ve been a good turnout, it didn’t stop anyone, and I mean ANYONE from making the best of the weekend and ultimately enjoying themselves.
The following year, the LDBP moved to Enon, LA. A quaint little spot called Riverbend Campground was to be the new location. Nestled back near the Bogue Chitto Creek, it provided an atmosphere almost Woodstock-ish with a biker flavor. Despite a few years later with the intrusion of Katrina, the LDBP was postponed to a later date, but those true to this event showed up regardless. And each year, as word got out, folks wanting to experience this event for the first time became the new rookies and have also remained loyal as well. The only hurdles keeping the veterans away were either jobs or family commitments. But with crowds growing well into the upper hundreds, someone always knew when someone was missing that particular event. It’s like a family reunion or sorts.
Along comes the Memorial Day Biker Party, (to be featured in our August issue). Another outstanding event put on by the Rottncycle Promotions Krewe. Word got out on that one early and crowds showed up en masse. The seams were stressing on the campgrounds and after much negotiations to facilitate the demand for more floor space, the owners didn’t budge. So, what’s a promoter to do? That answer was simple…….RELOCATE!
And that they did, to Sandy Hook, MS. Lee and the gang really wanted to stay in LA but knew a prime location near the state-line wouldn’t keep the loyal bikers away. So, Rockin’ M Event Center was formed. Currently sporting 180 campsites with water & electricity, open courtyard in front of a covered stage (complete with dance pole) and bath-houses for guys and gals, its maiden voyage was tested for Memorial Day Weekend. It was a packed house! And the available sites for primitive were abundant too. Plans are in the works to plumb up more sites and there’s plenty land to expand as the demand dictates. There’s even an event being promoted by Johnny Chopper after the LDBP in September. So, that’ll be 3 events to start. Expect more to follow. This is a site designed, created and run by bikers…for bikers! It’s a great location and well laid out for pleasurable weekends and/or events. Lee, Mary, Brad and Norma are phenomenal friends and are always available to talk to you about their facility and events. Give them a holler at 601-736-3721 or 601-736-2025. Happy Father’s Day!
I subscribe to Men’s Health Magazine. Not because I yearn to be a yuppie or some high-faluttin exec. I do it cause it’s a really cool rag. All kinds of tips for relationships, health, life, stuff and sex. Hey, they’re pretty good on interesting stuff about sex. And I read ALL OF IT TOO!!! But here’s a prime example of why I get this mag.
Their June issue had a very inspiring article by Richard E. Hoyt, Jr. You see, Richard has Cerebral Palsy. He cannot speak or walk. The story he wrote for MH was done on a computer with special software which allows him to move his head slightly to choose a letter, then a switch is pressed on the side of his head to enter the letter. I personally cannot imagine the patience required to perform such a task. Comparing that while typing this editorial is totally unimaginable. Rick being able to accomplish this alone is inspirational to say the least.
Rick’s story tells of “what his father means to him”. Rick and his dad run marathons together. They are known as Team Hoyt. Rick in his wheelchair while his dad pushes. Some marathons involve not only the run, but swimming as well. Dad will push with Rick up front or swim with Rick in tow. Some athletes didn’t want them to participate in their first official race but the executive director gave them permission. This really launched their running career and they’ve been marathoning ever since. This even included a triathlon which included a 10-mile run with Dad pushing, a 1-mile swim with Rick on a raft tied to a rope wrapped around Dad’s chest and ended with a 50-mile bike ride with Rick in a cart towed behind Dad’s bike. Total races tally at press-time? More than 950 races, including 25 Boston Marathons and six Ironmans.
Rick is often asked what he would do if not disabled and in the beginning he’d answer something like play baseball or hockey. Then something made him realize that he’d probably tell his Dad to sit down in his wheelchair so Rick could push him for a change. Rick realized that if it weren’t for his Dad, he’d probably be living in a home for people with disabilities, not even close to living the life he’s living right now. Rick says, “He is not just my arms and legs. He’s my inspiration, the person who allows me to live my life to the fullest and inspire others to do the same”.
Rick’s article made me realize the prize I have in my life. My Dad, Rene’ Chauvin. Dad was raised the simple life. Back in the days when families struggled to make ends meet, worked hard in the oilfields and raised his kids after a divorce and another marriage. Dad is “old-school”. Helping others in need, caring for others when they need hope or support, and always willing to share a cup of coffee and conversation with those in his life. He loves his family and supports us in all we do. June is a special month in his life because he turns 71 this year, and then later on has a day that honors him and other dad’s like him for his role in our lives.
Dads have Father’s Day to remind everyone that for one day, he can be pampered with love and appreciation for all the things that he’s done and what he stands for. Here’s to all of the Dads in the world, to all the Dad’s in the military and especially my Dad. You are my inspiration and I want you to know how much I appreciate all that you’ve done for me and that I love you so very much. Happy Birthday and Happy Father’s Day.

May is Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month!
Here we are in May and this is the month where all attention should be placed on all of us as motorcycle enthusiasts. We all know too well the excuses given in a motorcycle crash and unfortunately these excuses are given way too much validation to those who cause these crashes.
The upside to this awareness is that studies continue to show inattentive driving habits and are becoming front page news. Cell phone use, texting, aggressive driving, eating, drinking, piddling with the stereo, watching videos, GPS, applying make-up, reading, pets, fussing the kids, arguing with someone, sightseeing. Then there’s driving drunk, under the influence, under medication and driving tired from lack of rest, failure to yield to right of ways and not using signals. Then, there are those who just don’t belong behind the wheel period!!! And let’s not forget Louisiana’s pathetic highways and road conditions. Ask any driver out there and we’ll all agree; if you could enter LA from any bordering state blindfolded, you wouldn’t need anyone to tell you when you crossed the state line. The roads themselves tell you that you’re here. These are just a fraction of the causes of crashes on our nation’s highways. And we as bikers know full well the results of these situations and have known about them for a very very long time.
“Driving is a Privilege that DEMANDS RESPONSIBILITY!” This is not a birthright. It’s not something owed to anyone. You have to EARN this right. It starts with the parents introducing their kids to the laws and requirements of the road and the responsibility to others as well as themselves once they get behind the wheel. And very importantly, never taking for granted they become instant experts, because there are no experts! And all teens once they get that permit can’t wait to feel the power, control their environment and cross into the next level of authority. Then comes the ass-kicking stereo, lights, window tint, etc. All the things that express individuality. Don’t we know about that! But this is where it all begins and determines the future. It starts with us as parents, and we maintain their education through generous knowledge, example and awareness of the ever changing technologies, conditions and sometimes the results from the negative actions of others. This is the future generation that will share the roads with you and our fellow bikers. Teach them respect for and to watch for others and they’ll lead by example amongst their piers. When that happens, you’ll be satisfied knowing you did the best you could do to raise a responsible driver in your sons or daughters.

Stand Up for What’s Rightfully Yours!
Let’s just say….your neighbor’s dog is pain in the ass. Barks all the damn time and takes routine dumps on your lawn. And while it pisses you off that YOU are the one to clean it up, you pretty much just brush it off “as to not make waves or cause problems”. Your neighbor knows it’s not cool but figures “WTF, I ain’t gotta clean it up. It’ll waste away and become part of the land. Hell, it’ll make the grass grow greener”. His moronic view of his contribution to the environment. Another prime example of irresponsible behavior. Eventually, you say something about it but in return rather than a responsible reply, you get that arrogant defiance in return for a legitimate beef. Even if their friend is over for a visit or another neighbor witnesses this, they seem to side with them as if you haven’t a right to protect what’s rightfully yours. You pretty much feel alone and without support. So, you continue to be passive just for the sake of “getting along”. It’s easy to see that visitor or other neighbor isn’t too worried about your concerns cause the problem pooch ain’t crapping on their lawn, hence the “laugh it off” attitude towards you. It ain’t their problem……yet.
Sure, a bullet between the dog’s eyes would cure the problem but really, it ain’t the dog’s fault (nor is this legal! To be politically correct, I officially declare that I don’t encourage anyone to shoot the neighbor’s dog, much less the neighbor, regardless of their behavior). It’s just that his master hasn’t disciplined him in pooch-poop etiquette. Besides that, you’d not only have the neighbor to deal with but the local law, your neighbor’s attorney and even the local animal rights pimps banging on your door for retribution. Still all that attention never focuses on the original main problem; irresponsible behavior.
While this is actually quite true in life to some, it presents all of us with a seriously growing problem. And that problem is complacency. Before our very eyes is a change in America that we all need to study, take notice and be prepared to deal with it. America is becoming weaker by the day in the eyes of the world. There are Americans living right next door who believe that America has created all the ills of the world, hence; “We’re the “Bad Guys”. And their rhetoric is fueled by a biased media who channels this into our homes each and every day. And more and more weak minded people are jumping on that bandwagon and encouraging others to do the same without any regards to individual responsibility. And this responsibility is not only to get involved in our own government, education, parenting and contributions to society, it’s about realizing what the future holds for us in a world infested with terrorism and a hatred for us, “Americans”. When the next terrorist action happens on our shores, and we all know it will, do you honestly think the terrorists will give a damn about your political, religious or moral views, be it pro or con? “HELL NO!!!” You’ll be just another “Dead American”. And that’s just fine by them.
There are dogs out there looking to take a crap in your yard folks, trying to claim your territory as theirs. If we don’t do something about it collectively, we’ll ALL be walking around with shit on our boots.

“Bless You Boys!!!”
In writing this month’s editorial, I had to take the route that most have taken, and that’s to express my sincerest thanks and congratulations to Coach Sean Peyton and the Saints. Most of you who know me, know full well that I wasn’t much of a Saints fan but I always made it clear it was because of Benson and the way he disrespected the fans combined with the rhetoric about moving the team. I, like many, shared the opinion that it would probably be best if they just moved along cause the fans didn’t deserve such arrogance. Not after the years of loyalty the fans gave this organization.
But something happened that changed all that. Benson wasn’t in the media limelight anymore. Instead, the team once again became legitimate front page news. With Sean Peyton being awarded “Coach of the Year”, a young team under his guide winning games with the skills “professional football” demands, suddenly our boys made it all the way to the “Final Four” in the running to play in this year’s Superbowl. Who would’ve thunk it??? Who said prayer doesn’t work? On that frigid Sunday in Chicago though, I guess it wasn’t meant to be.
“THERE IS NO – I – IN TEAM”. This was what Coach Whatley used to tell us in high school, as many coaches preach to young football players, even to this day. Coach Sean Peyton exemplifies this philosophy. The Saints have shown the residents of this state what it takes to work as a team and focus on one goal. They proved to us that action makes all the difference. No one on that squad ran their mouths or made empty promises. They dressed out, put on their game face, focused on their mission and most importantly, GOT POSITIVE RESULTS. Although they didn’t make it to the Superbowl, it sure as hell felt like “Next Year”. These athletes are “True Winners” regardless of the outcome in Chicago. And there’s a lot to be learned from them too. These athletes have shown us what it takes to be winners. My only hope is that their drive, determination and dedication to their teammates and their fans rub off on all of us collectively. Because if we all become a “TEAM”, recovery, politics, education, employment and our way of life here in Louisiana can improve for the better. Think about it; The Saints’ players did this for us, shouldn’t we in return, do our part for them? These guys busted their asses to get where they are today. Don’t let this inspiration go to the wayside people. This team has shown us a standard of excellence we’ve not seen in years. We owe it to them and ourselves to become a team once again and demand the best in all we have to offer. Wouldn’t it be great to be respected for an efficient and effective government, educational system, employment opportunities, recovery and our way of life? It’s not that far-fetched! Even the nation seemed to be with us, rooting for the Saints to make it to the Superbowl. Why just the other day I saw the devil himself looking very concerned while purchasing some serious cold-weather gear. He may want to hang on to it, just in case! Go Saints and thanks for a great season!!!

RESOLUTIONS
2006 has flown by so quickly, it’s hard to comprehend we’re into another year. But we’re here nonetheless and we’ve got a whole new year to deal with. Don’t forget to throw away all your 2006 ink pens and change that 2006 key on your keyboard to 2007. I always forget to do that!!!
With a new year comes “Resolutions”. That evil little conscience that reminds you to do something for the better while deep down inside, you’ll probably last a month, if that long, only to give it up eventually. You’ll make your own though, based on your own life. That’s cool. And if you succeed with it throughout the year, you’ll have my admiration. While you’re running through the possibilities, allow me to suggest a few for your consideration.
Resolve to tell those you love, that you DO love them. Family and friends are important, but that special partner or spouse, your kids, your parents, brother or sister. Let them know that you love them. Hearing it for yourself is tremendous alone. You’ll hear it more often if you say it, just ‘cause.
Resolve to keep your scoot safe, serviced and clean. There’s nothing worse than broke down, in the rain and not a haven in site. Additionally, that special someone may be on the bike of your scoot too, so no reason to trouble them with something you put-off. If you ride motorcycles, understand the creed, then this is obviously a “no-brainer”. But, humans will be humans and routine maintenance doesn’t always end up high on the priorities list.
Resolve to learn more and pay attention to our elected officials and future candidates. We’re in the stretch for a new Presidential election and there should be some other officials up to vote on as well. Complacency never solves anything and I have heard many a bitchin’ and complaining about our government, politicians, officials, etc. from folks all around and the one question I always ask is; “Do you vote?” If you don’t vote, don’t bitch. But keep in mind this very fact: If you aren’t voting, then you’re contributing to the problem. No registered? Then get registered and vote in every election.
Resolve to keep our troops in your thoughts and prayers. We all get involved in our own lives that we forget those who sacrifice for freedom and the security of our country. Regardless of your personal views, our troops need to know everyday how much Americans appreciate their sacrifices. They know full well the prices paid. They are in the shit day in and day out. They see their brothers and sisters pay the ultimate price. They do it because they’ve committed their hearts to the security of America. We owe it to them. Thanks!!

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!
Christmas time is here and everyone oughta be scrambling around looking for those gifts for loved ones. I hope you’ve been good bro’s and babes enough that Santa’s gonna bring those gifts you deserve. From all of us here at Thunder Roads, we’d like to extend to everyone a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Remember to be careful while riding your scoot during this month with all the hustle and bustle-minded cagers out there.
Some news to pass on to everyone that’s worth mentioning is NorthShore Harley-Davidson has changed owners. Mike Bruno, owner of Mike Bruno’s Bayou Country Harley-Davidson has taken ownership, and the dealership is now called Mike Bruno’s NorthShore Harley-Davidson. Congratulations to Mike and the staff. When you get the chance, stop by and pay them a visit. They’ll be glad to see ya.
Some more good news and long anticipated opening is Spahr’s Restaurant in Des Allemands along Hwy 90 East. Many of you recall a fire a couple years back interrupted a long standing tradition for great food and Bloody Mary’s. During those years, ownership changed and several Spahr’s Restaurants opened throughout the area but plans to reopen were already in the works. Well, they’re open now with a new look but the same great service and flavor. Congratulations and Thanks to Brent Roger, Ted Bergeron and Donald Spahr for bringing back a missed tradition. Oh, and before I forget, congrats to Brent and my daughter Celeste’ on your engagement!!! That anticipation was just as intense as waiting for the restaurant to reopen!!! I look forward to having you in the family, Brent.
I would also like to welcome to the Thunder Roads family, Bleu Bayou Harley-Davidson in Monroe, LA. This dealership was purchased in ’97 in El Dorado, AK and moved to West Monroe in January of ’98. Since the name needed to reflect a Louisiana flavor, the name “Bleu Bayou” (Blew By You) was selected. Eighteen months later, the dealership took root at its present location at 6299 Frontage Road. We’d like to extend our thanks to Bleu Bayou Harley-Davidson for their support of Thunder Roads Magazine LA. Hey readers! Another event coming up in January will be taking place that involves Discovery Channel’s TLC program, Bike Build Off. While the builders aren’t local, the face-off will be. Stevie Rays Smoking Hot Blues will be the site of the 2 builders, Andrew Williams of Departure Bike-Works out of Virginia and James Compton of Compton Custom Design out of TX on Friday the 12th of January and the 2 builders will compete at No Problem Raceway Park on Saturday the 13th. The Biker Build-Off crew will be filming for their future program so mark your calendar to be there. See this issue for event info.

Get Involved & Give Thanks!!!
This year, November brings us a very important responsibility and privilege, “Elections”. Yes that’s right. That ever-so-boring topic of leaving the comforts of your home, breaking away from your daily routine or interrupting your plans for the day, to head out to the local polling station, verify who you are, sign your name, then walk over to a booth and select the candidates of your choice. How mundane! For the average person (based on national stats), voting seems to draw the least interest of most Americans these days. And this month, America will once again learn just how true that is.
Newspapers throughout the country will publish election results which will divulge the evidence of participating Americans who seriously practice their inalienable right to choose who will represent “US” in government. Facts also show that national elections usually garner the most voter turnout. As promissing as it seems, it’s still no excuse for the low numbers that are responsible for the candidates that win. And combine these numbers with the scary possibility that “non-citizens” are being allowed to vote through the encouragement and mission of those bent on changing America’s way of life, one could seriously conclude that true Americans can expect a future-changing government well beyond our comprehension.
Recent local elections are case in point. In Terrebonne Parish alone, 21% of registered voters turned out to vote on a proposed 1-cent sales tax that would have paid for levees. That measure lost by 208 votes. What does that mean? Many things but most importantly, the levee systems needed to prevent a repeat of flooding in the low-lying areas of the parish will not get the necessary funds to bolster an already weak barrier. So, needless to say, residents will once again turn to national government to literally “bail them out” if they get flooded. I think it’s safe to say that natural disasters don’t get a whole lot of assistance from government anyway. Haven’t we learned our lesson yet? Apparently not. What do you think?
This too should be a message to all candidates! Those of you in office should’ve learned by now that residents aren’t impressed with your efforts. Years of corrupt Louisiana government and personal political agendas have proven our “Lack of Trust in You”! While a lazy approach to elections is no excuse for our low voter turnouts, residents of Louisiana are fed-up with your inability to change Louisiana Politics to the respect it deserves. While you may use this lack of participation to your advantage now, this free ride will bite you in the ass one day.
Readers, in this issue, ABATE has submitted for your review, the candidates and their stances on issues related to motorcycles and the rights of their constituents. Use it freely to your advantage. Then, go to the polls and practice one of the few freedoms your have remaining. Our future depends on it.

A Child Needs Our Help!
Bikers for years have been known to contribute to many a benefit. Good causes are what make us unique in a sense that despite all the stereotyping someone can place on us, sooner or later society turns to bikers for financial help in some way. For that moment, bikers are a generous and committed breed to helping a good cause. Sadly though, once the benefit is over, we once again fade into the background of life only for our generosity to be pursued on another day. Fund raising has expanded beyond the traditional assistance we’ve been used to seeing for years. In most cases, an unfortunate incident affecting a family such as medical expenses, accidents, sicknesses and such are organized and a plea is made to the motorcycling community for assistance. We love a good ride, mingling with friends and having a party. So we come. Nowadays, poker runs are popping up everywhere for all kinds of reasons. Some even to generate operating funds for organizations themselves. Now don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with raising money for your organization to keep it going. That’s how most obtain their funding through donations anyway. And as I mentioned earlier, bikers enjoy an opportunity to ride with friends and spend a few bucks for food, refreshments, prizes and entertainment. But so few and far between are there benefits to assist other bikers. And when these do occur, bikers come in droves.
That’s what I’d like to mention to you this month. On October 15, the doors will open at 4pm to raise money for a special little girl whom a vast majority of us in the biker community know her parents very, very well. Little Kallie Alyssa McGuire, daughter of Jeff & Janine McGuire was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called MPSI or Hurlers Syndrome. It’s a debilitating disease and without treatment, the results can’t be good. Jeff and Janine, as you all know, are the owners of McGuire’s Pit Stop on Jefferson Hwy. in Jefferson, LA. Jeff has maintained the largest bike night on the Gulf Coast for many years and I doubt very seriously, there are many amongst you that haven’t been there at least once in your lifetime. This is THAT time when a fellow biker, a very active one in our community at that, needs our assistance. I think it’s safe to say that Jeff wouldn’t want all this attention brought down on his family, but as friends organizing this event has mentioned, this is about a little girl who deserves to live life to its fullest. Please make a strong effort to attend this event. This is that rare opportunity to help one of our own for a change, whose daughter truly needs our generosity, support, love and prayers. I hope to see you there.

5 Years, I hope you didn’t forget!
Those of you who know me well probably figured sooner or later I’d get on a rant once again. Well, I guess it’s time. Five years ago, this country was violated by extremists hell-bent on destroying our nation. They didn’t succeed on 9/11, but sometimes I wonder what direction it has led our country over the past 5 years and if that wasn’t something they had in mind anyway. Think about it. Our nation is a leader in the fight for Democracy, Human Rights, Freedom, etc. But yet, over the last 5 years there doesn’t seem to be a general consensus regarding the security of this country or the establishment of a government of, by and for the people. What do I mean? Look at voter turnout for example. Of all the countries in the world that hold democratic elections, Americans are responsible for the weakest voter turnouts but yet, those who don’t vote, bitch the loudest! We’re catering more to the voice of the few while the voices of the many have no consideration whatsoever. And politicians have learned to manipulate this lack of participation to their benefit. Can a government that’s supposed to be of, by and for the people maintain that requirement with a 27% voter turnout? I guess not! It can’t even be expected with a 50% voter turnout, although that would be a record-breaker! Keep all this in mind while noting that the largest voter turnouts usually occur only during Presidential elections. Shame on us!
World news is saddening. The war in Iraq, Israel’s war with Hezbollah, Iran and its nuclear pursuits, North Korea’s punk-ass dictator barking on his porch once again, Venezuela’s’ President Chavez talking crap about America while making millions off of its citizens. The list is endless. There are many out there who just flat out don’t like us. Blame it on whoever you want to; the president, senators, congressmen, governors. Doesn’t matter who you want to blame. It all comes down to us. Each and every American living in this country today. It’s up to us to hold elected official accountable. I really don’t care if someone thinks my assessment here is accurate or not, it is however, a legitimate reality: Hezbollah (a terrorist organization and puppet of Iran), came into Southern Lebanon, and seduced these citizens. Built some schools, hospitals, put people to work, fed them, and took care of them. In return, “hide these missiles” or “let me stash these arms in your basement”. Then, they picked a fight...on purpose! Turned around and hid behind the very people they “supposedly” took care of all those years. AND, staged media opportunities for the world to see (this too is fact). Guess who turned out to be the bad guys??? Wasn’t them. Israel was, and so was America. Is anyone paying attention? They’re taking the fight to us. Why? Because we’re Americans, period. And they hold us accountable for our countries’ government. After all, we elected them right? Well a few of us did anyway. Now, do you still think negotiations with a terrorist is a viable possibility? If so, God help us all!

Motorcycles and Class Reunions
As I’m putting the final wrap on this issue, I’m also reminiscing of years past back to those high school days. Yep, I just celebrated my 30 year class reunion with fellow classmates and I have to tell you, these gatherings get better over time.
Needless to say, there were those who weren’t recognized initially and I for one, liked the hell outa that. And of course, was one of those who wasn’t recognized by many at first. I mean, with an earned nickname like “Nappy” originating from my high school days showing up at a reunion 30 years later and “follicly challenged”, it took a while for quite a few old friends to realize who I was. And it was fun watching them figure it out. Especially the ladies.
I say that cause I was never really considered in the “stud” classification back then. Instead, I was pretty much diagnosed with the “nice guy” or “good friend” disease. And for a young teenage boy growing up in the early 70’s, that sucked!!! But that was cool cause although I, like most, hated to go to school, I still consider it to this very day, some of the best years of my life.
When we celebrated our 10 year reunion, it was pretty much the fare of “formal” gathering filed with exhibition of accomplishments and concern for where one was in life through personal achievements. Over those years to present, this attitude or atmosphere relaxed dramatically to where dressing down from Sunday best to shorts, sandals and t-shirts was more the protocol. Now, that’s the way it oughta be from the git-go!
But the one thing I thought was pretty cool was the attitude of classmates learning that I ride motorcycles. Once that was revealed, the faces that lit up and revalations of their last ride on the back of a bike… I’d love to ride one or, I had a bike once then had kids and sold it (but I plan on getting another one once the house is paid off). It broke the ice immediately and in some cases, you coulda swore I was some millionaire. The fact that I rode seemed to intrigue everyone I spoke with and definitely sparked conversation with the ladies (as if we didn’t already know that, right?). But in all the conversations, including those that had that motherly concern for practicing safety while riding, the one thing that was evident was that admoration. Everyone I spoke with expressed a desire to ride. That’s something readers, we all have that they don’t; “The Experience”.
We’re unique! We take the bold step and experience life in the wind. And it’s a feeling we share together and generously share with those who desire it. We all work to maintain our families and our lifestyles. But with all the accomplishments one can make in life, owning a motorcycle can be viewed as more powerful than a position as CEO of a company. And THAT my friends, is something I can live with for the rest of my life and makes me look forward to my 35th. Till then, Ride Free, Ride Safe, but just Ride! We’re Going Through Changes!
Yes we certainly are. And if you’re looking closely, you will notice we have been able to return to an all gloss publication. I know there are several of you who liked the changed format to regular paper instead of gloss. But we started out as a gloss publication and made these changes due to the economical effects of Katrina. We weren’t excited about doing it but it had to be done to sustain the life of Thunder Roads Louisiana. It took 10 months, but we’ve made it through the support of our advertisers, Thunder Roads Publishing and our printer (thanks Harvey!). So, we hope you enjoy the layouts and see our advertiser’s ads in a whole new light cause this format really helps them stand out. And as always, show our advertisers you appreciate their support by visiting and patronizing them often. We at Thunder Roads Thank all of our supporting advertisers for staying with us during these hard times and welcome old and new advertisers as well.
On our Troop Thank You page, you’ll see a copy of a Certificate of Appreciation to the Staff at Thunder Roads from the officers and soldiers in Afghanistan. We’re very proud to help our troops in any way that we can. It’s great to hear from these brave soldiers from time to time and we know any assistance from home that helps them while they’re deployed is a tremendous boost for their morale. So, if you have the opportunity to participate in any Support Packages from your area, please do so. The reward to oneself is a wonderful thing and priceless to those they benefit.
We’d like to introduce 2 new reps to the Thunder Roads family. First is Allen Simon. Allen is from Baton Rouge and an avid rider needless to say. Allen is enthusiastic about jumping on board and we expect quite a bit in contributions to the mag from him. When you meet him, or know him already, please congratulate him on taking on this great opportunity. Allen will be servicing customers throughout the Baton Rouge, Plaquemine, Gonzales, Hammond, and Northshore areas. Our other new rep is actually not new but back on board and that’s the Reverend Chuck Moss. Chuck recently returned to the Lake Charles area and timing worked out well with the unfortunate loss of Starr our newly acquired rep from a few months ago. Chuck is well known to the Lake Charles and surrounding areas so we know he’ll roll right back in with no problems. A special THANK YOU to Al & Martha Naylor for their hard work and dedication to the mag and hope your retirement goes well for you both. We’ll be seeing you soon. SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY HERE!!!
What’s happening Louisiana? Hope all are well and finding you gaining some serious miles on your odometer. I’ve been taking advantage of as much riding time as I can. Got my scoot back from the painters, looking cherry and very unique. I’ve got to tell you baggers are coming around as a cool platform bike for customizing. Special thanks to Roland and Mark of RCC Custom Creation for maintaining their trust in my ideas, communicating very often and providing one kick-ass paint job.
As you should see with this issue, we’ve grown 8 more pages. A combination of new customers and lots more event coverage demanded more pagination and we’re doing our best to accommodate both customer and reader. I hope we’re maintaining that quality for everyone involved. Be sure to thank our supporters when you visit their places of business. As always, they’re the reason we have a magazine laid out especially for you. And we’re hearing from you as well so keep them coming. Participation is the key to keeping Thunder Roads the best and only magazine dedicated to Louisiana Motorcyclists.
Lots of stuff going on this summer and into the fall so find you some entertainment or charity event to support and get going. I’ve received quite a bit of interest in what to expect this year regarding Steel Pony Express and the LA Bike Expo. Many of you have mentioned trying to make contact to no avail. We’ve tried in the past also but have since learned first hand that Scooter Promotions has filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. What’s to become of these two major events? Your guess is as good as mine, but I will venture to say that someone’s event is likely to become the next big gig here in Louisiana. Who’s gonna step up to the plate? Should we hear anymore regarding progress or plans, we’ll keep you posted.
Traffic accidents have been the rage lately in the local news media’s. State Police and area Sheriff & Police Departments have sounded the alarm of increased enforcement of violators of traffic signs, signals, seatbelt, drinking and other safety issues that have gone lax for a long time now. Summer is almost here!!!
Yep! You can feel the heat already. As I am going through this, I’m preparing for the Blast on the Bayou Rally while getting this issue out at the same time. It has been stupid busy lately but it’s all good. I hope everyone has been enjoying the sun shiny days and taking advantage of some excellent riding weather. Mother Nature hasn’t dropped any liquid sunshine as of this time but I’m sure she’s got some wet days in our future.
Rally’s and events are happening on just about every corner and every weekend so aside from that solo ride or group ride to nowhere, if you’re looking for something to do, check out the calendar and visit our website for the extended version to make plans ahead. May is offering some cool events such as the 3rd Annual Music & Biker Bash in Marksville, Inaugural Riders of the Storm Mother Nature You Didn’t Win Bike Rally in Alexandria, Blazin Bikes Motorcycle Rally in Lake Charles, 2nd Annual Grant A Wish Rally in Central LA, 2nd Annual Coonass Blowout in Belle Rose, 1st Annual Memorial Day Pre-Hurricane Biker Party in Mt. Hermon, Memorial Day Blowout in Gulfport, MS and then of course is Myrtle Beach Bike Week in South Carolina. And let’s not forget the number of poker runs and benefits all in between. Something is definitely there for you to indulge in or support. Another date to consider is Mothers Day on the 14th so definitely don’t forget that one! Another date I saw on my calendar is the 22nd, Victoria Day. I haven’t figured that one out. All I can think of is guys, go out and by your wife, girlfriend or main squeeze some Victoria’s Secret drawers or lingerie. Until I figure that one out, I’d settle for the lingerie gift giving idea. Try it out and let me know how it works for you!!!
We’ve got some post event coverage showing this month and with the amount of activities we covered last month, some of these will be in the next issue. Please be patient and allow us this inconvenience but rest assured, the events we covered will publish. We hate that we can’t add more to the mag but economics dictate this and we’re making the best of a tough situation much like all the rest of the businesses. Recent trips in and around the New Orleans areas have proven that life still is far from being normal. And the surrounding areas such as those in New Orleans East, Arabi, Chalmette and other areas worthy of mention are still in serious disarray. But not surprising is the tenacity of the people who live there. Everyone we meet all are upbeat about their situations and are focused on returning to normal. It’s a sad day that our government both local and national cannot get through all the red tape, political conflicts and plain ole bullshit and see to it those who are in need get taken care of. The aftermaths and restructuring has presented some very unfortunate situations within our communities. FEMA trailers are catching fire with some loss of life. Traffic crashes have increased what seems to be tenfold and the deaths occurring from these have risen tremendously. Townships are feeling the burden of increased traffic activity within their own respective communities with no relief in site. All we can ask is that while riding your scoot be very aware of your surroundings and other drivers because all indications prove today’s drivers are not paying attention. So be careful wherever you ride cause even the back roads aren’t as safe as they used to be. Sometimes, the interstate route seems the best choice of all. (Unless you’re in Baton Rouge). A report provided by Progressive Insurance ranks Baton Rouge 3rd in the nation in the likelihood of a motorcycle rider has a crash. In that same report, New Orleans is ranked 6th. Aside from more awareness of motorcycles on highways and roadways, safe operation is the key. Sad thing about all of this is that while motorcyclists are required to wear helmets, there are still deaths occurring. And what makes it even worse is crash data comes out way too late to lock in on the major problems. As motorcyclists we are very much aware that a vast majority of the crashes occur at the front area of the motorcycle and two-thirds are attributed to the fault of the other driver, the motorist. The attitude behind the wheel of a car is still a challenge to change. And while amenities and other distractions take the focus of the driver away from the main responsibility of driving, respect for other vehicles remain at the bottom of the list.
As of this publication, the wheels are turning to impose stricter fines and punishments for right of way violators. HB 694 introduced by Rep. Mert Smiley, Jr-Rep. establishes higher fines and penalties. Killing a biker or another driver no longer will have a “cheap” price if this bill passes. Although the fines should be more than proposed, any increase is an improvement to what’s currently in place. And the word that best describes the current fine fees would be “prehistoric”! On the flipside of all this, another bill, HB 1 introduced by Rep. John Alario, Jr.-Dem. steals $131,576.00 from the LA Department of Education’s Motorcycle Safety, Awareness & Operator Training Program Fund. These valuable classes are threatened with total annihilation simply for the intention of obtaining disaster relief for the state. “Hypocritical” in its presentation, this bill if it succeeds will destroy 30 years of admired efforts known nation-wide. And not to mention a “Slap in the Face” of every motorcyclist who’ve faced governmental efforts to a supposed desire to save our lives. And with Gov. Blanco making the helmet issue her first priority in office after her election, by the time you read this, she’s liable to have signed off on its passing. Taking away sources to improve our driving skills and continuing to impose prehistoric penalties for taking a person’s life due to irresponsible driving habits is counterproductive to the “sincere concerns for our safety” as expressed by most of our state’s Representatives, Senators and you, Madam Governor. Do the right thing for a change!

It’s a New Year!
Well yea, that was 4 months ago but for us, we’re moving into our third year of publishing. It’s exciting to say the least and it looks like life is finally breathing into the event season. April and May are kickin with stuff to do. And not too soon! We’ve been cooped up with open weekends and bro’s out there are pretty much ready to drop the honey-dos and get to some serious fun! Check out the calendar for a good time near you.
A vast majority of us know the common experiences and places we share bring us together as a family. There’s a tremendous mix of lifestyles associating together at shops, runs, shows, local taverns, rally’s or just sharing the road together. The bonds are automatic when bikers congregate. Of course these bonds may vary in its intensity but even if it’s a slight bond that’s recognized, it still happened
You have come to learn that riding affects us physically, emotionally and at times spiritually. There is no denial of it. It exists inside each and every one of us. It’s hard to believe sometimes that you will run into that one individual who after riding for several years and associating with this vast family of unique individuals, they still haven’t learned the real meaning of being a part of the motorcycling community. They place a distance between them and the “image”. So much so, they don’t recognize it in others who ride.
Recently, I ran into a person with whom a conversation shortly determined that both of us ride motorcycles. He didn’t know who I was (and I never led on either), and I didn’t know him. But the situation allowed us ample opportunity to talk “shop” if you will. Eventually, it dawned on me that this person, loved riding, but didn’t really like hanging around “the ones that wear the leather with all those patches and stuff. You know the kind, the really scruffy looking bikers”. Okay, well let’s see. Just who might this guy be talking about? So, I figured I’d have a little fun to see where he was going with this. In the process of asking questions, extending the conversation and just letting this guy share all his expertise with me regarding the biker community, I learned who these scruffy folks were.
Seems the guy wound up at a HOG Rally (now mind you, this has been a while) and saw all these HOG patches, Motorcycle Ministry patches, a few other organizations. Based on his conclusions, this was a rough bunch of cowboys and he had to leave because he was uncomfortable. Now mind you, I’m checking this guy out and he doesn’t seem out of the ordinary to me. I mean riders come to my office quite often. Not everyone is recognizable during business hours, but come the weekend or a bike night, you recognize them in their gear.
So I figure I’ll continue to have a bit of fun with this and ask if they consider themselves a biker. “Oh, hell no! I’m a motorcyclist.” Okay, but you ride correct? “Of course I ride. I ride very often”. So then, what about the general public, the cagers on the highway? Aren’t you concerned at all that they look at you as a biker? “But I’m not a biker; I’m a rider….an enthusiast”. Okay so, I admit to the guy I consider myself a biker. “You belong to one of those gangs?” Well, I maintain my HOG membership, but ride independent. (the eyebrow rises, like I’m being elusive about something). Now, I’m sensing a change in the conversation’s temperature. Apparently, I’m suspect; I could even be the enemy (?). So, I pretty much figure it’s time to take a leak or something to get me the hell away from this “no-clue” individual cause the conversation has just passed annoyance and is pushing aggravation. So I ask one last question just to hear a final response. “So, doesn’t it bother you when you’re on the highway, dressed in your leathers to protect you from the cold riding around all those cagers, that you are considered a biker probably to all 100% of them?” His response continued to maintain his disassociation of being a biker. Almost like an innocence.
“Oh well dude, the teeth are floating now, gotta go, later!” And gone I was. And this made me think. There are a lot of riders out there who don’t understand the perceptions of others when it comes to your own. Regardless of what you ride and your lifestyle along with it, when you are on the road, you are a biker. No if’s, and’s or but’s about it. So while one may place a distinction between themselves and the rest of the motorcycling population, the cagers could care less as to who you think you are, what you think of yourself, much less who you associate or don’t associate with. Kinda like we’re all biker trash. Me, I’m cool with that lable; Certified at that! Some of the best people I know are looked at in the same way. Amazing how the “If I have to explain, you wouldn’t understand” slogan was originally intended for non-riders. Maybe the rest of us should wear that patch for those riders who don’t understand. Sooner or later, they’ll come to realize that if you really want to enjoy and take in the truest form of physical, emotional and spiritual rewards of riding, associating with others who have years of riding under their belt down to the newest of riders is an integral part of capturing the essence of what motorcycling is all about. Although it’s really strange how 2 wheels, sheet metal, chrome, engine and exhaust brings many folks together, sharing a common bond that takes one away from a cage. It shouldn’t end with that. Don’t deny yourself the human side of the spectrum. Because you’ll be riding alone for a very long time.
We’re now in the market for a staff representative for Baton Rouge and the Northshore (Covington, Slidell, Bogalusa, surrounding) areas. We’re looking for a reliable and dedicated person to service existing accounts, handle sales, distribution and event coverage. Being a rider is very helpful. There’s a chance to make some decent money and depending on the individual, it could either be full or part time. If this sounds like it could be you, give us a call. Happy 2nd Birthday Thunder Roads LA!!!
We're very proud of this Louisiana. Two years running and we've survived all the crap and turmoil the last half of '05 had to dish out. Sure it was a tough last 6 months but we've managed to keep our heads and chests above water. It's not over but we're deep in the mess to maintain our publication for the motorcycling community of Louisiana. We have many to thank for this.
We want to thank first of all, our supporting advertisers. Many have gone for good, slowly coming back or staying in touch to get back on board at a later time. Then there are those who never missed a lick. Right here between the pages of TRMLA, doing their part to keep us afloat and maintaining their support for our readership. You have all contributed to helping us maintain our success in keeping our readership informed, entertained, and up to date of events and matters that affect the motorcycling community as a whole. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and hope you will continue your faith in us while we strive to get back to 100%.
And just as important, we want to thank our readers for their loyal commitment to our publication. Your words of support, wisdom and encouragement are what make all of this worth-while. You have allowed us the privilege of hearing your concerns, thoughts, and ideas every month which we in turn, do our very best to keep our content real and Louisiana related. Thanks to you, there is no other publication within the state of Louisiana that offers the motorcycling community a magazine loyal to its own. And to top that off, your contributions for event listings has allowed us to keep the largest and most active Louisiana Biker Events Calendar in this region. Please keep your events coming and let other event coordinators who we are and what we can do for them. Thanks to every one of you for your love and support. And with this Birthday we plan on celebrating too. Our 2nd Annual Thunder Over Louisiana will be held at Cajun Country Lounge, 8448 Main St. in Houma, LA. This event will be from 11am till 10pm. We're asking a $10 donation per person which will provide you with a wrist band allowing access to the lounge and vendor areas. Live music by Weathered, Pig Pen and the Porkchops and Black Rain along with door prizes, 50/50, food, bike show and a live auction. And speaking of auction, there will be a very "unique" item which will be up for bid during the auction. This special item will be direct from Iraq. I'm not going to let it out as to what it is, but it'll certainly be something you don't see offered at any department store, mall, or retail outlet. Very much related to the culture of Iraq. Our bike show will be unique in a sense that the awards will be "People's Choice - Where you be da judge". All bikes will qualify to participate. With your entry, you will receive a sticker with a number. Place it on your headlamp and attendees with wristbands only, will be allowed to vote for their favorites in the following categories: Stock American, Stock Metric, Custom American, Custom Metric, Custom Touring, Custom Chopper and Rat Bike. The show is meant for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to be judged by a committee. Everyone gets to participate with a chance of getting a plaque commemorating they won the popularity of the other attendees supporting the event.
The net proceeds from this event will be donated to Louisiana Cares, the funding organization that supports the Louisiana National Guard Family Services groups. At current, there are 9 units throughout Louisiana. They work with families who have loved ones deployed overseas. Oftentimes we forget the sacrifices made by these families when someone they love leave their jobs for the call from their country. Loosing that income during that time can add to the stresses already existing from them being deployed in the war against terrorism. This is such a worthy cause to support. Many veterans, especially those who ride know full well the importance of communities supporting their families during these trying times. We are very proud to support such a worthy group of Americans, specifically Louisianans. This is our way of expressing our thanks to those families who inspire us to be strong and never taking for granted our freedoms. We invite everyone to attend and support this event. Yes, we are celebrating our 2nd birthday, but more importantly we want to show our support to those families who are sacrificing the separation of their loved ones. Please show your support and join us on Sunday, March 26th and we hope you have a great time.
With Spring here, a lot of events are finally coming around to get involved in. Our calendar has a lot of postings to choose from. Get out and ride to some of these events. God knows we've been cooped up for too long. I hope you bikers in the areas affected by Katrina and Rita are getting life back to normal at some reasonable pace. I am still amazed of the horror stories that continue to come out that folks are experiencing, even after 7 months. It's really hard to comprehend the delays, shortchanging, and disappointments some of these folks are dealing with daily. But the wildest thing about it all is that they continue to remain positive, about everything. Most I've spoken with just laugh it off, although reluctantly, because they've learned that their needs aren't going to arrive quickly. And holding your breath would be a total waste of time. I respect those of you who are dealing with this right now. I wish you the best for a speedy recovery and a life back to some form of normalcy.

Happy Mardi Gras!
Hard to believe but yes, Mardi Gras is here. And ladies, you get that special day also with Valentines Day. But hey, we guys get a piece of that action too. What better way to show you love us; with a new chrome add-on for our scoots. What a woman!!!
It’s been pretty much a slow season lately with the exception of rural poker runs and benefits. But since Katrina and Rita, what else would one expect. But fear not cause there are some events over the horizon that’ll give you something to do other than enjoying the ride itself.
Right away in February, the 4th to be exact. The Cajun Cruisers 8th Annual Poker Run will take place on this rescheduled date. Every year this group does a tremendous job in raising monies for worthy charities. And at the same time, throws in a fun time watching bike games from some fierce and aggressive players. And the guys are pretty competitive too. For $20 apiece, you and your woman (or solo it) gets a really awesome ride in the south eastern areas of Louisiana but some great food, live entertainment and bike games all in one day. And the folks that come out and support this event are some of the coolest people around. So give this one a shot.
Mardi Gras is gonna chug along starting on the 18th in New Orleans, on the 17th in Houma and ending on the 28th. Lots of other areas such as Lafayette, Lake Charles, Geidan, Larose, Thibodaux and many other areas of the state including Shreveport and Alexandria areas as well. Always a great opportunity for family gatherings on the weekend, ride and shines before and after parades, eye candy, and of course those precious beads (nothing like bringing a bunch of left over beads to a biker event for some added enthusiasm).
March brings the Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show in Dallas, TX on the 25th and 2nd Annual Thunder Roads Magazine of LA’s 2nd Anniversary and Ride In Benefit will take place on the 26th, a Sunday. This year, we are bringing our celebration to Houma at Cajun Country Lounge, 8448 Main St. in Houma. That’s to the right of the foot of the twin spans connecting to the East Side of Houma. We’re bringing in vendors and displays, live music, door prizes, 50/50, Ride-In Bike Show, free food and access to the bar. Party starts at 11am until 10pm. Entry is $10/person and required for access to the bar. The monies raised from this event will be donated to Louisiana Cares, who contributes funding from donors to the LA National Guard Family Program. These are the folks that take care of deployed troops’ families back here at home. It’s a worthy cause because of their sacrifices (the troops and their families). Wristbands will be given so come on over, spend some time, ride around our town and come back later on. Hope to see ya there.
April’s brining the Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler at the Jefferson Davis Fair Grounds on Hwy 64 in Jennings April 7th thru 9th. The 20th thru the 23rd is the 2nd Annual Blast on the Bayou Rally at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, LA. A first-time event last year, Larry was very pleased with the turnout last year and has received a lot of compliments, obviously resulting in an even bigger event this year. And Lafayette is always a cool spot for biker events. This year’s musical line-up is pretty awesome with special guest group, The Jimmie VanZant band, Zebra, Damon Troy & LA Beat, Jamie Bergeron & the Kickin' Cajuns, The Charlie Parker Band, and that’s just to name a few. Offering bike games, bike show, poker run, Cajun Spice Bikini Team, vendors, and Master Bike Builder Wild Bill of Pro Street Customs. $35 register, with pre- getting you a free t-shirt. Check this event out; it’s definitely a great time. And the Hampton Inn and Sleep Inn are taking reservations now. See their ad this issue for contact info.
Last weekend in April (28th – 30th), the Crow Road Crawfish Boil offers all you can eat crawfish, all weekend while offering bike games, raffles, door prizes, poker run and auction. And Friday night, Molly Hatchet will be entertaining the crowds with that true Southern Rock-n-Roll.
Now May is a special month as it’s Motorcycle Safety and Awareness month. And to kick this off, the Louisiana Motorcyclists Safety and Awareness Committee (LMSAC), is organizing a kick-off rally for April 30th. This event offers motorcyclists the opportunity to hear speakers inform the motorcycling public of issues that are of serious interest. This event also offers live music, refreshments. Planning is rolling as we speak so details for this event will be forthcoming. Stay in touch with our website and the mag for updates to this important and resourceful event.
You get the basic idea that life does exist once again with events. It’s just taken some time for us to wait on it while at the same time, a “slap on the back – well done!” to those who’ve maintained the determination to keep things rocking so we can all feel a bit of normalcy once again. We’re keeping events updated on our website so check that out but this issue has plugged in some more events, all the way to October ’06 so we’re doing our best to get you something to consider for your weekends. Happy New Year!!!
Where did 2005 go? Man, was this a quick year or what! We’ve seen some really wild things over the last 365 days and I believe I’m not alone when I say the only stand-out events were 2 hurricanes a month apart. This is one event that will never be forgotten and by the grace of God, not be surpassed with something bigger and more devastating. We will all be feeling this one for a long, long time. Let’s all hope and pray 2006 brings us some better times to help lift our spirits and bring us closer as residents of this great state of ours. And of course, our country as well.
This year too, hopes to be an even better year for Thunder Roads Magazine LA. We’ve got a couple new reps on board. Rev. Chuck Moss is handling our Southwest LA areas and of course on board for a few months now, Michael “Bear” Ray is handling the duties in the Northwest LA areas. We’re always looking for events in these and other respective areas throughout the state. We’re going to bring to our readers more features sure to entertain and inform. We look forward to your continued support and suggestions for some really cool stuff to share with everyone else.
One feature we’ll be starting in upcoming issues is what we call “In the Hawg House”. This feature is all about you, the rider who’s taken a piece of your home or backyard shop and transformed it into a piece of art, hideaway, a place to stay (if the lil’ woman kicked you out the house), or just a place to polish your ride while slamming a few cold ones down by yourself or with some of your cool bros. Sounds like something you have? Well, if you do; and you want to share it with our readers, let us know. We’ll be looking for a few photos and some text describing your pad. No need for addresses or specific locations. Just your name, city and whatever it is you want to share with the rest of us. Got some vintage items hung on your wall? Got a layout fit for a biker King? A wall full of flags, posters, banners (including that one particular Thunder Roads banner swiped from a certain event in Enon???)? Whatever you have and if you’re proud of it, send it on. We’re looking for good quality photos too. Remember, interior pictures taken need good lighting so flip on all the switches, strobe lights, candles, incense, spot lights, open garage doors or whatever it takes to illuminate your pad and start snapping away. We’ll do the layout and take your text info and put together one righteous article. (Unless your literary skills are better than ours, we’ll use yours instead).You can submit the text via email as well as the photos to any of our reps’ email addresses. Just remember, if they’re big files, send just a couple at a time. Or, you can mail them on disc to our mailing address found on the Thunder Roads Staff column on page 1. If you want to send regular photos you can. But we cannot return them unless you provide a self-addressed-stamped-envelope (with the proper postage) with your submission. This is gonna be a cool feature as your labors may be an inspiration for others. Unless you got some illegal stuff stashed, send them on. You’ll be the talk of your fellow biker bros!
We are still looking for 2 additional reps for the Northeastern LA & Northshore areas of LA. What we are looking for are dedicated and energetic individuals who have a genuine love for riding and some time on their weekends and/or a few minutes of their weekday to handle the responsibilities of distribution at the beginning of the month, sales and customer relations, event attendance with photography and article submissions for post event articles. You can make money while being a biker and having fun all at the same time. It’s a responsibility that we take seriously so please, only if you’re willing to devote some time to this should you inquire more about the positions. Our readers, distribution points and customers rely on your loyalty to keeping Thunder Roads Magazine LA on the shelves, available to our readership. Think you’ve got what it takes? Give me a call and let’s talk some more about it.
Additional features we’ll continue to provide are Readers Rides, male and female. If you’re proud of your scoot (and own/ride it), we’re interested in you. We can set up your feature 2 ways: Send a rep over to your favorite spot and let them shoot away with their camera, take some info for the article and submit it to our office. Or, you can have a friend, hubby, family member, attorney, doctor, tax rep or even man’s best friend take the photos, gather some info for the article (or you write your own) and submit them to our office for publication. This works great if you’re in a remote location of Louisiana. Rules are simple: You must be a resident of LA, must be either male or female (?) and must own and ride your own motorcycle of any make or model. Sorry, no babes on your bike cause you’re too ugly to photograph. Ugly or not, those are the rules. And submissions are sent the same way we described in the section about “In the Hawg House”.
We’re getting close to rally season again. While a few won’t be taking place till later ’06 or even ’07, there are still some events coming down the pike regardless of all the BS taking place during recovery. Thunder Roads Magazine LA too is currently planning our “Thunder Over Louisiana” event, celebrating our 2nd Anniversary and raising funds for Louisiana Cares, the funding agency for the Louisiana National Guard Family Assistance Services. Stay tuned in the mag and on our website for more details. We’ll be looking for vendors, sponsors and most importantly, YOU to attend this year. We raised $5,600 last year and hope to blow those numbers away this year. Hope you can make it. Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year!
That’s right all you deserving biker dudes and biker babes! I spoke with Santa the other day right after Thanksgiving and he told me every one of you have been extra special goody-good for sure. He’s got loads of presents for one and all and promises this year will be extra special. Keep up the good work on being nice instead of naughty. Well, we’re bikers right? Being kinda naughty ain’t so bad now is it?
On behalf of the staff of Thunder Roads Magazine LA and me, we would like to extend our sincerest Christmas wishes to every one of our readers and our advertisers. You have all been tremendous in your contributions, well wishes and generous support. We hope this season brings your families together for great times and fellowship. I know our family is big because each one of you is family to us. Thanks for making our publication such a tremendous success and keeping us going during these rough times.
I have to say goodbye to a wonderful person, beautiful friend and strong ally for many years. Vicki Banos came on as my Associate Editor after working with her during our Full Throttle Years with Gilbert Evans. Her hard work and strong dedication to this publication is why I gladly accepted her into the TRM family. After all the havoc wreaked upon her life between the two hurricanes, she had to make the rough decision to move away. Inasmuch as I hate to see her go, I understand totally the need to lookout for herself and her son Nick. What has become a loss for us could become a blessing for TRM Colorado, as I’ve been able to get her introduced to Linda & Russ, our SEO’s for Colorado. She’s got a huge territory to bulldoze and I know she’ll be making serious strides to that part of the country. Beautiful landscapes, excellent highways to ride on…going to be a whole new experience, but one I know she’ll embrace with open arms. I’m gonna miss having you with us Vicki. This is sincere and from my heart. I appreciate everything you have contributed towards the success of this magazine. Your hard work and dedication will be missed. I promise to keep in touch as I’m sure lots of your friends will do as well. I wish you the very best in your successes and know Linda and Russ appreciates your talents and abilities. I recently spoke with Warren Broussard, President of MAC, Motorcycle & Awareness Campaign. They’ve got some really cool stickers that you’ve got to have. They can go just about anywhere. They’re yellow, have an “eye” graphic with a motorcyclist riding (in the pupil of the eye) with the text “Please Watch for Motorcycles”. They measure roughly 1-1/2” tall x 8” wide. Warren mentioned anyone can get these to put on their vehicle, window, wherever. It is also a great sticker to place on high-visibility areas for the general public. If your organization or group of friends would like to obtain these, give them a call or visit their website for contact info. Should you have an interest in placing these in strategic areas, be VERY SURE, you contact the owner of the business or property to get their permission to place these. It’s a win-win situation no matter how you look at it.
Last issue and this issue as well, you’ll see a display ad regarding Voting. Don’t overlook it. It’s got some serious info and with a recent election completed in November in our area, this ad couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time. Terrebonne Parish and surrounding recently had an election with some issues regarding parish government and such. To make a long story short; all items failed. Failed tremendously. And it failed with slightly over a 5% voter turnout. One would think regardless of turnout, these bills would have failed because it dealt with raises for local government officials, some tax additions and a list of other items that really came at a bad time for residents in this area. But the fact remains; Voter turnout was pathetic. I know this seems like beating the dead horse again but everyone of you need to know, this state is broke! This ain’t no bull! Blanco’s freeze on hiring and spending has affected the LDOE’s Motorcycle Safety Awareness and Operator Training Program. Have any of you reading this thought about going through a course, just to hone your skills and put it off? I know I have. Well, God only knows when this’ll be up and running again. Watching any “investigative” programs themed “post Katrina” lately? Sure is a lot of BS coming out of these investigations aren’t there? The truths are coming out and it’s very ugly. Louisiana’s citizens are misplaced, jobless, inconvenienced, relocated, broke, leaning on family for support. This description is miniscule compared to the realities surrounding the aftermaths. And there are a lot of career politicians who’ve dropped the ball and contributed to this mess. Cronies, buddies, nepotism, under the table deals…..everyone knows this state’s reputation for corrupt government. Until everyone gets involved in the voting process, until everyone scrutinizes the candidates, and until everyone holds these “servants of the taxpayers” accountable, it will continue to be status-quo. Please don’t let this mayhem continue. It’s time for the finger pointers to take their medicine.

Happy Thanksgiving!
If there were ever a time in our lives to give thanks, now would have to be that time. Although many of you may still be misplaced, picking up the pieces, dealing with losses, etc., we all still have our lives and a future to control. Once again, our hearts and our prayers go out to those who were directly affected by the hurricanes. It’s no fun dealing with the problems generated in the aftermath and sometimes it seems like the rest of the world has forgotten all about us but when it comes right down to it, does it really matter? After all, it’s up to us to make a difference. And the time is now to do so.
It’s hard to understand how life can get crueler sometimes. You make reason of it, but still it never quite makes sense. We’ve spoken about bikers and cagers many a time and just recently, the increase in traffic due to relocations. In just a short 2 month span, there were 5 bike accidents that I personally am aware of. Three of the five involved rider/passenger while 2 involved just rider. Eight people in all and two had to die due to other driver’s irresponsibility (loosing non-secured bed mattresses out of her truck, another driver crossing the center line). The other accidents involved either impatience on a driver, driver loss of control due to mechanical failure on their car, and rider error. Of the eight people involved, I am close with 5 of them, knew one who died, and knew slightly the other rider who died. And to top it off, recently lost a nephew in an auto to auto accident.
Chances are this cycle is likely to smooth out. Just a rash of accidents in a short span of time that only seems like a trend. But trend or not, this is a very bad thing. What is to come from this point on, who knows? We’re moving into the months where riding becomes more enjoyable than ever. Cool days, requiring leather in the mornings and evenings. Who “doesn’t” ride during this time? So, more bikers will be out amongst a rash of impatient or clueless drivers. While recently riding from Houma to Lafayette, I felt a sense of total control and comfort on the interstate. Hardly any traffic on the open roads. It felt great! But all that changed once entering the various townships. The overall observations; No respect for motorcyclists! No respect for others! No respect for themselves!
What’s really sad though is the recent news release I received from the LA Department of Education regarding Motorcycle Safety, Awareness and Operator Training Programs. Governor Blanco issued an Executive Branch Hiring and Spending Freeze (Exec. Order #KBB 2005-38). In short, all motorcycle operator training courses scheduled after October 3, 2005 are postponed. So, the choice for new riders and existing riders trying to hone their riding skills is limited drastically. This program was state-wide and now it’s no longer available for an undeterminable amount of time. So, novice riders and existing riders wanting to hone their riding skills and improve defensive responses are left to themselves to learn on their own. While there are a few private trainers out there, the choices for Louisiana’s motorcyclists are narrowed to less than a few. Well, at least we have our helmets to keep us alive, right? Nothing like a helmet to keep those inattentive, aggressive and irresponsible drivers from killing us right? RIGHT? In the meantime though, our heartfelt condolences are extended to the families of Tommy Hood, Sr. and Kevin Angelette. We hope you find comfort through faith and love. To Chy & Bubba, Paul & Gaynell, Mickey and Maureen, we wish you all a speedy and healthy recovery. To Kim, Brenda, Katie and Kristin, my heartfelt condolences are extended to each of you and your families in Donnies’ tragic death. He was a wonderful and inspiring young man and will be sadly missed by all of us who loved him. My thoughts and prayers are with you always.
Okay, the plea still stands folks. You got an event coming up, send it to us cause we’re willing to post it in our calendar in both print and on the web. So many bikers are looking for stuff to do and the success of your fund raiser or event is crucial to getting the word out. So, send us your event via fax or email and we’ll get it in. The Lone Star Rally is rescheduled, the Arcade Theatre Presenting Bike Art in Slidell is still on, and there are several Veterans’ runs taking place too. Of course on those days where there aren’t too many things to do, nothing like a nice ride from a point “A” to a point “B” and back to ease the mind, cleanse the spirit and rejuvenate the soul, I always say. Whatever choices you make, do it safely and always ride aware.
I would like to take this time to thank and welcome home, all of the brave soldiers of the Houma National Guard Unit, “The Black Sheep”. We really appreciate your sacrifice for country as well as the sacrifices endured by your family members. You are an inspiration to us all and we want you to know we are proud of the accomplishments you’ve made in Iraq during the fight against terrorism. Not only have you done your country proud, but you have represented your communities with dignity, bravery and above all love for our country. May your futures grant all that you truly deserve and provide you a life filled with love and success. Readers, as with all veterans, when you see these guys or meet one of them for the first time, shake their hand, hug them if you will. Enough Already!
I think it’s safe to say I speak for everyone when I scream that plea. As I sit here getting this article together, Rita is dealing her own pain, while adding insult to injury to those of the southeastern portion of our great state who’ve already endured Katrina. Several of the TRMLA staff members including yours truly hauled ass for that one. Half of us, who returned, came back to a filthy yard, spoiled food, and a few days of inconvenience without electricity. Others weren’t so lucky. So, we are now all about “recovery” in our own personal ways.
As you can see while reading this month’s issue, you will find the magazine has made some changes. We have made these decisions in order to sustain life. The life of Thunder Roads Magazine LA. Suffice it to say, that losing our New Orleans and Northshore accounts to the devastating Katrina, we have taken a tremendous economical hit and much like thousands of businesses out there struggling to pick up the pieces, we find ourselves doing the same. Now we have Rita to deal with and currently we will be re-assessing our families to the west now. Even as I put this together, southern Terrebonne Parish is filling up with water from a strong south wind, compliments of Hurricane Rita, so who knows what tomorrow will bring.
But, what we want our readership and our supporters to know is that we are doing everything within our power to maintain this publication’s “Quality” first and foremost. We’ve always felt our quality was found more in content than in appearance. We will maintain this throughout our recovery and into the future. Our readership and our supporters have always been very kind and generous in your input to our staff. We appreciate this very much as it shows us how much you care and support our publication. We are grateful for each and every one of you. You are a part of our family and we want to maintain this trust always. Thank You from the staff of Thunder Roads Magazine LA! Since many of our brothers and sisters from the New Orleans/Northshore areas have relocated, we’ve been getting a lot of requests for ideas and/or locations for Bike Nights in the Baton Rouge, Lafayette metropolitan areas. So, I’m getting the hint out there that there are many bikers looking for some fun and a place to hang out with fellow bikers while they’re dealing with new territory. Of course, we have a few listings here for biker friendly establishments sponsoring bike nights (so check them out), but someone out there has to have the resources, location and desire to see this need and fill that void on those nights not already taken. And we’re your avenue to get this word out.
And while we’re on the subject of “relocation”, everyone should know by now that most of these same metropolitan areas have seen a tremendous increase in population, literally overnight. And one word that comes to mind for me is “lost”. Meaning; learning the new town. That’s right folks; new residents that are not familiar with the towns in which they’ve relocated can bring on some new challenges while driving. Hell, even little ‘ole Houma has seen its share of increased traffic congestion. And with all things considered, riding a scoot in these towns should bring on a new sense of awareness because there are a lot of people driving around that are not familiar with the layout of the land (so to speak). One could easily realize that there are some that may not always pay attention to their driving for many reasons so please, be careful if you are new to an area or if you are a local and are dealing with the increase in population. Please readers; we are not slamming anyone with these statements. Only reminding everyone to practice a higher awareness when they ride.
While recovering the aftermath of Katrina, communications have been a major obstacle for everyone. We’ve been doing our best to contact as many of our supporters as well as family and friends to see how everyone is doing and how they fared. At this time, there are still many of our supporters whom we’ve not been able to contact. If you are one of those businesses, please send us an email when it is convenient to let us know how you fared and to let us know you are doing alright. We would also like to hear from our supporting businesses how they are doing and what they are doing to accommodate their affected markets at this time. Information such as if your business is open, what services you’re providing, any accommodations available for relocated bikers, etc. We’ll post this info on our website and share it with our readers in our next issue too.
I’d also like to take a moment to speak to those businesses that have not yet considered becoming a supporting advertiser in Thunder Roads. This publication makes the 20th issue we’ve produced. We have provided the motorcycling community with news, information, post event articles, features, humor, and entertainment on a level program geared entirely for the Louisiana Motorcyclist. We are dedicated 100% to this community and this very community contains a readership that patronizes your business. There is no other publication such as ours that dedicates itself to Louisiana as we do. We are a magazine made by “LA Bikers for LA Bikers”. We want to continue to provide Louisiana’s Motorcycling Community with a top-notch quality publication for years to come. We are asking that you please consider becoming a part of our supporter family. Even if it’s just for a short trial period. This magazine has to endure, and we need your help to make this happen. Letter From the Editor
This month, we’re featuring an article from the AMA website regarding new regulations that are flat-out, right on top of each and every one of us. I hope you take the time to read through it carefully until you have a full understanding of what’s about to transpire within the community of motorcycle riders of all types and makes. There are many amongst us that have levied this reality upon the motorcycling community and for fear of the same old habit of hearing what is being said, but not actually “listening” to the message – this article and others like it are the reality check that many in the motorcycling community, especially new-comers, need right now because it may not be too late.
This is one of those times were the famous quote, “if I have to explain, you wouldn’t understand”, cannot apply I our world. It has to be explained and because of being a member of this motorcycling community, you’d better be willing to understand, if you want to continue your passion of motorcycling for yourself and the riders of the future.
Years ago, motorcycling attracted a rare breed of individual who discovered the passions found in their inner-selves to live the experience of motorcycling and all it has to offer. This attraction is even more present today. Back in those days, riders traveled free of confines, and many restrictions. Over the years with the popularity and function of the motor vehicle world, the need for safety came into play. Suddenly the freedom of choice was lost due to helmet regulations. Sure it has its pro’s and cons but the fact that a freedom was taken away by powers-that-be who have a tendency to make the choices based on biased or let us say, limited contributing resources never became part of the equation at that time. Quite simply put, no one ever figured someone would have the power to come in and tell you how you will ride, and with what you’ll be required to do it with. And continually throughout the years, various regulations moved in and in reality, still is in full-force today. And over time the conversations in the motorcycling community, who were paying close attention, started becoming aware of the fact that maybe one day, I won’t be able to ride anymore. So, they talk to one another, their friends, their co-workers and especially, they talk to newcomers; those who are experiencing the thrill and passion for motorcycling for the first time.
But as human nature will quickly do in most cases, the response to this “paranoia” as some will call it is, “there’s no way they’ll stop me from riding”. Well guess what? The reality of not being able to ride anymore may be a lot closer than you think.
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) became aware of the new EPA proposals in December 2000. And what they saw was very threatening. Some may still believe that they will not loose more freedoms associated with riding motorcycles, but guess what? You are about to become very restrictive. What used to be an endless pasture to graze in turned into a pasture with fences. And the widths of these fences have successfully shrunken down to narrower pastures. I do believe, that most – if not all of us are now starting to see the intersection between the cup and the neck of this funnel that has formed around us. And once in that neck, the future can look grim.
Please take the time to read this article. Realize its implications. Check out the resources that are provided, or through their words alert your curiosity to research their purpose or meaning even further. Understanding all the possibilities is the key to preventing your passion from becoming history. This is a plea to every rider in Louisiana to take a serious interest in. Especially, you new riders coming into this community for the first time, or in some cases, riders coming out of years of hibernation. This is your passion, your appeal, that’s about to be whittled down to virtually nothing. Complacency has no place amongst us anymore.
The golden privilege I have is to layout a publication each and every month. And the pictures provided to every post event article say it all. From the littlest of benefits for a family member or friend, to the biggest biker event in the nation, the staff of Thunder Roads Magazine LA, views the faces of many different Americans (or more specifically, Louisiana residents) as well as visitors to our country. And the one tremendous lift to our spirits is to meet our readers, their families, their friends and neighbors in their own environments through these pictures. And the faces tell it all. We go through a lot of photos, some of which never make it to the actual article. So, we’re not kidding when we say we go through a lot of photos. And with the frequent and eventual face-to-face meeting of these wonderful people, our own family grows once again. Their appreciation for belonging is evident in the gratitude and their genuine personality when you talk with them about the article and other things going on in their lives. They all express that deep appreciation to share their lives with others within the community. This allows them to expand their love for motorcycling and/or their appreciation for the biker community as a whole. Our readership experiences this just as well. And it starts with a simple conversation starter such as, “hey, saw your readers ride article”, or “saw you and some friends at that rally (or poker run)”. Relationships are born from this. This is only a fraction of the reality that contributes to the reasoning that loosing my freedom to ride the motorcycle I choose, on the roads I take, and the miles I yearn to travel makes me not want to give up riding due to more restrictions to my freedom. And I know all of you don’t want that either.
You’ve all chosen a bike to ride, highways to travel, a charity to support, a people to bond with. You’ve done that because it’s your inalienable right to do so. Imagine if you will a bike built to your style and character (either modified stock or ground-up creation). Then take that bike along with your hard-earned money invested into the creation of that style and character and restrict it to specific travel destinations, specific aftermarket accessories, and specific purpose of use. Suddenly you have a highly regulated activity that has limited use. To some (possibly newer riders), it’s gonna be that “give-up” mentality that’ll force you into finding another lifestyle as an alternative to your recreation. For others who refuse to give up their right, it’ll be one of two things. One of which is to passively comply with the regulations as provided without any assurances to oneself that all the aspects were researched responsibly to come to this new regulated change. For others, it’ll be the constant work to educate oneself in the knowledge of what these new regulations will mean to us all, considering a choice to get involved, and stay on top of the continuous pursuit to ensure reasonable legislation of our passion. This is well beyond a helmet issue readers. It’s crept right up to the ignition key on your scoot. So, now what are you gonna do? Get involved? Let’s hope so. It’s Hot!!!
Yes, that it is, but you have to admit, riding weather is always good regardless of the temperature just as long as you can stay dry. But then again with our summers, a lil bit of the wet stuff can be refreshing at times.
Happy 4th of July Louisiana! BBQ’s, swimming parties, family get-togethers and biker events abound this month. I hope that everyone is taking advantage while the taking is good and hope everyone has a safe and fulfilling Independence Day celebration.
This month also honors America’s Biker Community by recognizing the “14th Annual Ride to Work Day”, scheduled on the 20th of July, which is a Wednesday. This would be a cool time to get a bunch of bro’s together, hook up for some coffee or breakfast or whatever and cruise out to the job site on your ride. It’s also a good time for those bike nights being held on Wednesday’s to consider doing something a bit more special than normal just to honor the Biker Community. Whatever you choose to do on this particular day, make it a point to Ride to Work. That statement alone shows we support one another in the encouragement of motorcycle awareness.
Our Calendar of Events if filling up as usual with lots of stuff to do. We appreciate the contributions for event announcements. On our website, the listing is called; Louisiana Biker Events. That’s as plain and to the point as you can get it. It even comes up on many search engines just by typing those words in. As a service to the LA Biker Community, we keep the website as updated as reasonably possible. That way should you have a current issue of Thunder Roads; you can always go to the website to view any new and updated listings that didn’t make the deadline. Should anyone have an event they’d like listed, send us an email or fax with your event information. Be sure (and this is very important) to list your event’s date, location, times, entry fee, and contact info with the area code please! We do get lots of fliers that don’t have area codes listed which makes it tricky to determine how to contact. I still see names of towns I didn’t even know existed in LA. Tells you a lot about my geography skills.
July, August, September and October has some pretty cool sounding events coming up. Be sure to check them out. There’s always something for bikers to do every month, it’s just a matter of getting out there and doing it. Hopefully the rain is holding out for a bit to give us some longer riding times during the next couple months. I’m currently working on my scoot to do a bit of custom work on it. Since the weather hasn’t cooperated for a while, I had to make the choice (like most of you have before) to just tear the damn thing down knowing full well the weather would get better once the scoot was in pieces. Chances are, when you see me attending an event, I’ll be in “Cage Mode” till its back up again, but I promise my mind will remain in motorcycle mode during that time.

“Your Future Lies Ahead of You”
With summer closing in, the telltale sign of all this is ending school sessions, and graduations from High Schools and Colleges. And with my daughter’s recent graduation from college (congrats Celeste’), the speeches given during the commencement ceremonies had one common denominator; “your future lies ahead of you”. As a parent and adult in his later 40’s, sitting on that side of the fence, it had that obvious familiar ring to it bringing back memories of raising kids throughout their young lives. All of us who are parents know full well what I’m talking about. These speeches are that one last bit of advice to pass on to the graduates who are now to embark on to the futures their career goals have led them to.
Remembering pretty much the same theme from my high school graduation, looking back on the years while hearing it all again brings current life to full perspective. Each one of us knows full well the real world outside of those education years. Chances are, if most of us could turn back the clock, it would wind up somewhere around our freshman year maybe? Maybe not! Whatever the choice, our youth as it turns out, was pretty good years for most of us. Now, life is about family, responsibility to it as well as employment. Bills are always due; the rat race of work and advancement never seems to get one quite where they want to be in life sometimes. And needless to say, everyday can bring on new and unexpected situations most of us aren’t always prepared for.
But for the sake of not boring any of our readers with too much philosophy of which I’m no expert at, one really cool thing seems to bring a similarity between graduation and the biker community. We’ve all at some point and time in our lives, set a goal for ourselves to reach an objective. For us, we had a strong passion to ride. We established a game plan, researched our choices, studied the availabilities, saved for the future, and then graduated into that lifestyle. And upon this graduation, some of us chose to learn through common means while others took their education to the next level for excellence. And while a business career choice has its own responsibilities, so does riding. And most seasoned riders are seasoned workers as well.
In both environments, you recognize the highs and lows and have learned to adapt to this strange but inherent cycle. At work you deal with the slackers, butt-kissers, and those with no clue while at the same time working with conscientious, safe and responsible coworkers. Not all of these good workers are highly educated either. Most are just motivated and brought up with a good moral work ethic. At the same time, the bad workers consist of the same realm of education as well. The difference is in responsible ethics combined with the level of education. The same holds true with motorcycling. You co-mingle amongst drivers who are safe, responsible, courteous, and conscientious. These drivers handle from 2 wheels up to 18 or more. You also share the road with aggressive, selfish, distracted, inebriated, and downright un-educated drivers as well. Put the two together and you get a full range of possibilities with the chance that you and someone else at some point in time will have differing opinions of one another’s driving skills.
College and High School grads will find themselves having to prove their abilities out in the workplace. Their knowledge, intelligence and skills will be put to the test many times, while at the same time, their ability to handle both reasonable and unreasonable situations will be looked at too. As a new rider, your skills are tested and monitored by those you ride with. Listening to seasoned riders while focusing on a higher degree of education will only guarantee your safety and success and eventually get you to the point of being recognized as a seasoned rider. There’s a philosophy out there in the motorcycle community and it goes something like this: There are two kinds of motorcyclists, those who have crashed and those who haven’t crashed yet. I can’t really warm up to that way of thinking although I’ve fallen into the first description already, years ago. I’d like to think that philosophy isn’t gonna repeat itself in my world again but one never knows.
Becoming educated in a skill you have a passion for is the one common denominator that brings you full circle with that passion. Everything else falls into place and performing becomes second nature over a shorter period of time. And most of us are dealing with time (this is the age thing I’m talking about now). But remember, much like the graduate, your future lies ahead of you too.
Focus continues throughout the various medias about how the motorcyclist is dying at an alarming rate. They connect it to mid-life crisis pursuits, bigger bikes, drinking, age, and bigger engines. Those who compile the selective statistics and question the safety experts overlook one very important fact; 67% of all bikers killed have had their rights-of-way violated. This defines as left turns in front of our path, crossing into our lanes head on, run downs from the rear, pulling out in front of us, or violating a traffic sign or lighted intersection. With this high percentage, which is actually documented, one would think this dangerous and growing pattern of death causes is worthy of a higher recognition over the pathetic excuses being used today. It seems to reek of a lazy excuse in that educating the public on responsible driving skills is more of a burden to local governments, so making the motorcyclist the responsible party in the matter is easier to incorporate. This is unacceptable behavior because still today, too many of our brothers and sisters are dying or being injured on Louisiana’s highways, “while wearing their damn DOT helmets” so this quick fix hasn’t fixed anything!
Readers, I know that some of you may feel this is a dead horse I beat pretty often but this can’t be silenced. We care about every single rider of a motorcycle no matter what brand, no matter what association, no matter what religion, no matter what ethnic background…no matter what!!! And a multitude of screaming voices in unison is the missing piece of the puzzle to get irresponsible drivers off the roads and accountable. We’ve recently incorporated the Louisiana Motorcyclists Safety and Awareness Committee into full action, celebrated May as Motorcycle Awareness Month and on July 20th, the 14th Annual Ride to Work Day. There are so many events going on that incorporate riding motorcycles, and you and your bike is needed to bring awareness to the citizens of this state. YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!!! “May is Motorcycle Awareness Month”
That’s right readers, it’s been a long time coming but Motorcyclists here in Louisiana are finally on the forefront of awareness. Governor Blanco signed the Proclamation on March 15, 2005 recognizing the importance of motorcycles through their economic and practical value, expected increase in traffic mix, vulnerability to injury, use of safety equipment, sharing in the same rights as other vehicles on the state’s roads and highways, importance of conscientious efforts of motorist awareness of motorcyclists rights and needs on our public roads, and the promotion of motorcycle safety, awareness and operator training.
We’ve included a copy of the Proclamation in this issue. In addition to this recognition, further steps are currently in action to bring more awareness to the general public regarding motorcyclist safety. With ABATE at the forefront and MAC’s direct involvement as well, this proclamation was generated through both of these important organizations’ efforts. And as continuance of these efforts, a committee has been formed to work directly with the state. Petitioned on August 2, 2004, James “Poet” Sisco, Executive State President of ABATE petitioned Col. James Champagne of the LA Highway Safety Commission requesting a joint Committee between the Motorcycling Community and the State of Louisiana be incorporated in accordance with the NHTSA Motorcycle Safety Program, per Section IV, A. Col. Champagne, in full agreement and eagerness to establish such a worthy committee, obtained approval and the committee was formed. Compiled by members of ABATE, MAC, LA Department of Education, Motorcycle Safety and Training Program Manager, Motorcycle Organizations of various riding groups, CMA, Biker Down Organization, Lamar Advertising, LA State Police and Thunder Roads Magazine LA. This committee, Louisiana Motorcyclists Safety and Awareness Committee, meets twice a month with one of these meetings with Col. Champagne in attendance. Our mission statement: “To Enhance Motorcyclists Safety on Louisiana Roadways Through Public Awareness”.
Through these meetings, assertive efforts are currently in process to establish Public Service Announcements through billboard advertising, radio & television outlets. During this current publishing, April 27th is the scheduled date for a press conference which Col. Champagne formally announces May as Motorcycle Awareness Month. In addition, the unveiling of billboards being placed all over Louisiana during the campaign. June’s issue will provide our readers with story and pictures on this event and the Kickoff Rally.
May 1st, at the LA State Capital Building at 1pm, there will be a May Motorcycle Awareness Month Kickoff Rally. Motorcyclists from the Eastern and Western parts of Louisiana will relay the proclamation signed by Governor Blanco via State Trooper escort to the steps of the Capitol, where there will be a brief ceremony remembering fallen bikers. After the ceremony, there will be a reception at Harley-Davidson of Baton Rouge from 2 – 4pm. There will be a wreath-laying ceremony place on the Capitol steps in memory of Louisiana’s fallen bikers. All motorcyclists are encouraged to attend.
Regardless of our own opinions regarding helmet use, as motorcyclists we still have to maintain compliance with the law as current. But most important to be aware of at this point, is the efforts forward regarding the safety of all of us. Don’t think that once May is over, that this newly formed committee adjourns till next May. That’s not happening. This committee’s very existence is predicated on the efforts of ALL of its members and the acceptance and respect from both the motorcycling community and general public. Make no mistake in thinking you, as motorcyclists, are being petted with “feel-good” patronization. Cause, that ain’t happening here. There will be a continuation to keep PSA’s happening on a monthly basis, whether it’s in billboards, radio or television. Please always keep in mind, that your safety is our concern. Not only is it important to incorporate more efforts to ensure motorcycle awareness to other motorists, it is also just as important to continue efforts in encouragement of responsible and safe operation of motorcycles. Inasmuch as there are a large percentage of bikers killed every year due to right of way violations, there are still staggering statistics that prove singe motorcycle accidents are killing bikers as well. Whatever the reasons, it’s still important for us to remind all bikers regardless of what you ride, to remain alert and prepared while riding. Never take for granted that you are seen or respected. The efforts to bring motorcycle awareness to the forefront will take some time. We are going to do our part, but we are asking you to do yours as well. It’s common knowledge to accept that only YOU are responsible for your own safety. Please join us in our efforts so together, our numbers will educate much quicker.
As we enter the summer months, events are happening virtually every single weekend. Check out our “PHAT” calendar for an event near you, unless you desire a longer ride.
